Are The Heave The Next Silverchair?

The Heave have won a national band competition, and are receiving airplay on Triple J, all before they’ve even left high school.

But the rocking trio from Sydney Grammar are in no rush to hit the big time.

“First we have our HSC next year: getting a good mark will come first,” drummer Ned Green told The Sydney Morning Herald.

“Next year will be pretty heavy with the HSC, and rock music isn’t so viable. You have to be in the top five percent … you can’t make money off CDs any more,” added bassist Hugh Kluger said.

But their chances of being in that elusive top five percent are better than most. The Heave won this year’s Kool Schools band competition, the same project that gave Delta Goodrem, Missy Higgins, Anthony Callea, and Dean Geyer their starts.

As part of their prize, the lads flew to Melbourne to record their original song “Crank It Up.” The song will be included on Alpine Uncovered, an album featuring bands and musicians involved in the Kool Schools initiative.

For now The Heave will juggle their study commitments with plenty of all-ages shows. Sydneysiders can catch them at The Metro on the 31st of October.
