James Reyne Celebrates 30 Solo Years with Capital City Shows

In 2017, James Reyne celebrates a 30-year solo career. To mark the milestone, he’ll re-release his solo album on vinyl and play two very special live shows.

That self-titled album built upon his artistry developed with Australian Crawl. Even if you don’t own it, you’ll know the songs, tracks like “Fall of Rome,” “Motor’s Too Fast,” “Rip It Up,” and one of my favourites, “Hammerhead,” performed so beautifully here.

James will play with a full band at Memo Music Hall in St Kilda on April 28 and The Basement in Sydney on May 5. Tickets are on sale from the venues now.

Busby Marou Announces Queensland Tour for Forthcoming Album

I have a lot of love for Busby Marou. They’re one of Australia’s most unassuming musical acts, but they’re stellar songwriters with harmonies that are second to none. I can’t wait to hear more of their music when their third studio album, Postcards from the Shell House, drops on February 17.

Until then we’ll just have to be content with the release of the lead single “Getaway Car.” Busby Marou isn’t a band that needs studio trickery, so it’s only fitting to bring you a stripped back version of this song recorded on Great Keppel Island, where the duo wrote and recorded much of the album. It’s an idyllic setting which is perfectly suited to Busby Marou’s laidback style of music.

You can hear more of it when Busby Marou take their new album around Queensland next year. Hopefully it won’t be too long before they announce shows around the rest of the country.

Carus Thompson Tackles Big Issues on Island

It’s been five long years since Carus Thompson has released any new music, but he’s making a real statement with his comeback single “Beach Fires.” The track explores the ice epidemic and way this terrible drug erodes friendships and communities.

“Beach Fires” comes from Carus’ forthcoming album Island, which is slated for release in early 2017. Expect more big themes on the record, with songs exploring isolation, refugees, apathy, and other issued affecting our social climate.

Carus will take these songs on the road with local shows in February and March.

Lisa Richards Moves On With “A Light From the Other Side”

Lisa Richards has lived one hell of a life. She battled drugs and alcohol before moving from her hometown of Townsville to the States in her mid-20s. There she released five albums and toured relentlessly over more than 20 years before her husband was sent to prison. Heartbroken, she returned to Australia to rebuild her life. With all that experience behind her she’s created a brand new album, A Light From the Other Side.

It features the song “You Got the Power,” which encompasses everything the album is about. I love its strength, insightful lyrics, and jazzy instrumentation. Lisa’s voice is also so unique, with the kind of tone that stops you in your tracks and demands you listen in.

Lisa will showcase songs from A Light From the Other Side at her upcoming shows.

Kerser Ready to Drop Sixth Album

Kerser is on target to achieve his goal of releasing ten albums in ten years with the impending launch of album number six, Tradition, on November 18. He’s released a new LP every year since his debut, The Nebulizer, dropped in October 11.

After working with Sinima Beats on his last record, the  MC from Campbelltown was keen to have the producer back on board for his latest release.

“We wanted to make it a lot more versatile and I think we’ve done that,” he enthused in a press release. “We’ve covered heaps of styles and a bit of dance, a bit of boom bap, a bit of original stuff … There’s a bit of everything on it.”

One of those tracks, “Bad Habits,” almost didn’t make the cut, but when fans swamped his YouTube channel Kerser knew this brutally honest song deserved its place on Tradition.

“Every album, I move up,” Kerser insists. You can find out if he’s right when Tradition hits stores on November 18.

Owls of the Swamp Releases New Single “Start All Over”

My favourite Icelandic-based Aussie, Owls of the Swamp, is giving us a brand new taste of his forthcoming EP Meteorite. Called “Start All Over,” the track is a mellow piece of atmospheric indie-folk, perfect for giving you a little moment of calm during a busy work day.

“Start All Over” came about after Owls of the Swamp took a life-changing trip to Peru. The song sees him considering the bliss he found abroad and contemplating what motivates his “real life.”

Meteorite, featuring “Start All Over,” drops on November 4.

Leah Flanagan Tours “Saudades”

Fresh from touring her single “Chills,” Leah Flanagan is preparing to hit the road again to celebrate the release of the album it comes from, Saudades.

“Chills” is one of those songs that gets under your skin with its emotional lyrics and vulnerability, and there are more of those feels on the album. The tracks explore all those emotions we carry through to our relationships, romantic and otherwise. Leah’s sultry voice is perfectly set for the songs which play with jazz and blues.
