COTERIE Give Me The Feels With “Say Goodbye”

Perth band of brothers COTERIE have totally won my heart with their latest single “Say Goodbye.” This song is so good, with quality songwriting and haunting vocals that hit me right in the heart. By the time those harmonies kicked in, I was gone.

“We wrote this in our lounge-room with Hauskey – who is absolutely brilliant – and honestly, it was just a song that fell out. It all happened in about half an hour,” admitted Tyler, the band’s lead singer and vocalist. “It’s about the humanity of everything in this life. Nothing is forever … Saying goodbye is inevitable in a fleeting world. We wrote this song with that in mind; everyone knows this feeling – we all ‘Say Goodbye’ at some point.”

COTERIE filmed the song’s video inside a bus which the brothers bought as a potential tour bus once they can hit the road again. They started restoring it at the start of the global pandemic, and through the video you can see how far they’ve come.

When they’re not renovating buses, COTERIE have been putting together a live show that’s set to blow the socks off their growing fanbase. Check them out at the following shows, which are hopefully the first announcements of many for this band.

7 November 2020 – By the C Festival @ City Beach Park, Perth
16 January 2021 – Torchfest Sydney @ The Factory Theatre, Marrickville

Sia and David Guetta Spread the Love with New Single

Sia produces such consistently great music, that I sometimes forget to take the time to appreciate one of our country’s best exports. However, now that she’s teamed up with David Guetta again, I’m not about the let the chance go by.

Only time will tell whether their new track “Let’s Love” reaches the dizzying heights of “Titanium,” but I can tell you it’s just the kind of positive banger we need in our lives right now.

The pair recorded the single during isolation to deliver a message of hope and love around the world. And don’t we need that right now! Let’s love indeed!

Dana Crowe’s New Single “Anchor in the Blue” Worth the Wait

Melbourne singer-songwriter Dana Crowe has released a stellar new single “Anchor in the Blue.” It’s got such a cool sound. I love the rock edge in Alana’s voice and the bluesy instrumentation. Dana actually recorded the track a while back, but it hasn’t seen the light of day until now.

“I’ve had this song completed and shelved for what feels like forever as I wanted it on the now delayed EP,” Dana said. “With so many people separated from their loved ones it seems like a perfect time to release it.”

If all the music is this good, hopefully we can all hear the rest of Dana’s new EP material soon!

Elana Stone Takes a Left Turn With “Permanent Limbo”

I’ve heard Elana Stone creating jazz music, the folky ditties with her group All Our Exes Live in Texas, but I’ve never heard her quite like this. Her current single “Permanent Limbo” is pure electronic pop. And while it’s different, it’s actually pretty amazing. Is there anything this woman can’t do?

This is such a fun dancy number, but it came from a difficult place. Elana wrote the track as her long-distance relationship was breaking down during an All Our Exes Live in Texas tour. If these things have to happen, at least you can get a great song out of them, right?

“I am so excited about this release because it’s fun and danceable but it has its roots in a story of love and loss. It was cathartic to write and it will be cathartic to release and share during this moment of historic uncertainty. It is essentially a danceable electronic pop anthem to accompany the merging of humans and technology and potentially the end of life as we know it.,” Elana explained.

Live music is such a rare joy these days, so it’s exciting to see Elana has a few gigs coming up. Bookings are essential during the pandemic, so visit her Facebook page for all the details. Elana will play the following venues:

16 October 2020 – Venue 505, Sydney
4 November 2020 – Mary’s Underground, Circular Quay

MANE’s “Over & Over” is the Next Track You’ll Play on Repeat

Adelaide indie songwriter MANE has really impressed me with her current single “Over & Over.” It’s an introspective track about overcoming difficult times, but despite its heavy subject matter, it’s also a total bop.

MANE said she wrote the song in the hope it might help someone else struggling through their own adversities.

“‘Over & Over’ was written in a moment of strength during a really difficult time. I think, when things are tough, you can choose to sit in sadness or you can choose to push forward; this song is a little reminder to myself to continue to persevere and to fight for my happiness and peace, despite how hard it may be to do so at times. I hope it can bring a moment of strength to those who feel similarly,” she said.

“Over & Over” comes from MANE’s forthcoming EP Coping Mechanisms, which is scheduled for a November 13 release.

Cry Club Drops Indie-Pop Banger “Nine of Swords” Ahead of Album Release

Melbourne indie-pop act Cry Club are just about to drop their debut album God I’m Such a Mess. Before they do, the duo is giving us a taste of their new music with the release of single “Nine of Swords.”

This track is so much fun. It’s the kind of music that has you reaching for a hairbrush mic and bouncing around your bedroom, dancing like no one’s watching. Or maybe that’s just me? Either way, it’s such an upbeat ditty that celebrates overcoming personal anxieties and developing healthier coping mechanisms. Yay for that!

“I have a habit of running from the bad things happening in my life, ignoring them or blaming them on mercury retrograde,” explained vocalist Heather Riley. However, being so honest about her challenges might not have been the hardest thing about the single release.
“This entire single release has been a test of our creativity in lockdown. When it became clear we probably wouldn’t have access to a studio because of lockdown, we worked with our director, Jack (Alexander), to come up with a super DIY concept which we could shoot on an iPhone, and put it together with a little help from Spotlight and our housemates.”

God I’m Such a Mess drops on November 13. Until then, crank this one up and reach for that hairbrush!

Will Clift Reminds Us Of The Joy of Being Alone With “Get By”

I’m not sure he had the global pandemic in mind when he penned this track, but Will Clift’s latest single “Get By” is the perfect iso anthem. If you’re getting by on your own these days, this laidback funk track is bound to resonate.

Rather than dwelling on the isolation, Will revels in the space that solitude brings. It’s the perfect song about reclaiming your power, whether you’re living in lockdown, you’re enjoying the single life, or both!

“All of my close friends know that I love Tom Misch and ‘Get By’ is definitely my Tom Misch inspired song. It’s really about being comfortable on your own and not relying on others for your happiness,” Will explained. “Julian Steel and Ben Oldland did an amazing job working on the production and if you listen carefully you can hear some cheeky BV’s from JAYDEAN. I’m incredibly happy with how it turned out!”

“Get By” is the latest track lifted from Will’s forthcoming EP Coast, which will drop real soon.

Kinkora Releases New Single From Lockdown, “Set Me Free”

Releasing new music during a pandemic presents a challenge, but Melbourne soul-pop act Kinkora won’t let the virus slow her career down. She recently dropped a brand-new single “Set Me Free,” and it’s got just the kind of upbeat vibes we all need right now.

“Set Me Free is about being in a relationship with someone that you know isn’t good for you, but feeling trapped and unable to find a way out. It’s about that toxic, helpless kind of love that keeps pulling you back in,” Kinkora explained. “Whilst I wrote the song over a year ago, the release has coincided with the current shared experience we have of feeling confined – so I think everyone will be able to relate to the general sentiment of wanting to be set free in some way!”

It sounds so slick, but Kinkora actually recorded the song in her bedroom before letting master mixer Matthew Hadley work his magic. Recording the video took some lateral thinking, but it’s pretty brilliant. Check out the clip which sees Kinkora’s dancing flash mob unexpectedly crashing some Zoom calls.

“It was a massive project to coordinate. Each of the dancers learnt the dance via video and we had one run through on Zoom. On the day of the flash mob we used a group text to send cues such as “Go Group 1”, “Go Group 2” etc to notify the dancers to enter the zoom call at the right moment – the whole thing was done completely live. It was chaotic but absolutely hilarious.”

“Set Me Free” is the first of several songs Kinkora will release this year and into 2021, so watch this space!

Let Nick Marcus’ “Falling” Capture Your Heart

Sydney singer-songwriter Nick Marcus has me swooning with his latest single “Falling.” It’s a gorgeous track anchored by the guitar, but with some cool electronic beats for freshness. Its lyrics about falling too fast, and too deep are bound to strike a chord with all you hopeless romantics out there.

“I wanted to express the feeling of someone who has fallen in love and the other person doesn’t feel the same way,” he explained. “I hope I expressed this with the acoustic nature of the piece and mellow percussion. I wanted to challenge myself vocally and I feel that this song brings out the emotions of heartbreak and longing for someone.”

“Falling” comes from Nick’s self-titled EP, which will be released on October 18.

Sarah McLeod Releases Beautiful Dog Tribute “Chachi’s Theme” For RSPCA

I’m not sure anything hurts quite like losing a pet. My 18-year-old family dog Charlie died a couple of years ago and I’m not even close to over it. So my heart goes out to Sarah McLeod, who recently lost her beloved pooch Chachi. He was a proper part of Sarah’s touring crew, and he will be so missed. I have no idea where she found the strength, but she’s managed to put her grief into a beautiful new song, “Chachi’s Theme.” All money raised by the single will benefit the RSPCA.

“Chachi has been my everything for 15 years, she came with me on almost every Australian tour and everyone loved her. She recently passed away and I’ve been trying to work out how to live without her. I found myself going a bit nuts, asking all the birds if they had a message from Chachi, then I thought instead of sitting waiting for a message from her, I’ll send her one from me,” Sarah explained.

“I read this poem about the rainbow bridge by Paul C Dahm that comforted me so much. They say that’s where animals who were especially close to their owners go after passing, it’s a beautiful utopia of love and sunshine and all the sick are healed. Here they wait for their special friends, and when it’s our time to pass, we meet them and cross the bridge to eternity together. I’ve taken great comfort in this poem and I wanted to make sure Chachi knew what to do. I figure if I’m singing this song night after night she will undoubtedly hear me and get the message. It was so hard to write because I did it the week she passed, it was all so raw and I cried all the way through it, but I had to push through because I knew I needed it to heal. Now, besides a piano covered in tears, I have this song, I have something solid I can connect with her through, forever, she will be with me always but especially when I sing this song. I wrote it to heal my heart and to let her know that everything is OK. Then I thought, it may heal other hearts in similar situations so I thought I should release it and donate the proceeds to the RSPCA.”

I’m warning you now, if you’re still grieving a pet, this one is likely to get to you. I couldn’t listen to it without ugly crying. Honestly, I’m still wiping tears away as I type this. Don’t say you didn’t have notice. But this piano ballad is a beautiful, cathartic piece, a fitting tribute to Chachi. How amazing to create something that can make other people feel so deeply.

Sarah was all set to play electric solo shows before COVID hit. She’s just announced details of her post-pandemic tour, but it’ll be a little bit different. The first set will be electric, but the second will be a more intimate piano-based one. Sarah learned how to play the instrument in lockdown and she’s keen to show off her new skills.
