Alex Lahey and Gordi Launch Over Our Dead Body

We’ve all heard the collective frustration of artists who say it’s so difficult to break into the industry. Now Alex Lahey and Gordi are doing something about with the launch of their live music initiative, Over Our Dead Body.

“We keep hearing the same thing – it’s harder than ever to break artists in Australia at the moment. Triple J’s Australian Artist Survey showed that nearly half of all Australian artists have thought about quitting the industry in the last few years, in part because there aren’t enough opportunities to perform. So, we started thinking – what can more established artists do to help lift up emerging artists?” the pair said.

Every Wednesday night leading up to Christmas you can enjoy artist-curated residency events at Shotkickers in Naarm/Melbourne. Here’s the full line-up; get out and support these artists and this cool initiative if you can:

6 December 2023 – June Jones, Katie Dey, The Vovos (curated by Georgia Maq)
13 December 2023 – Pisco Sour, Obscura Hail, Leo (curated by Gordi)
20 December 2023 – The Belair Lip Bombs, Eaglemont, Harris (curated by Alex Lahey)

Alex Lahey Shows Softer Side With New Single Ahead of Album Tour

Most Alex Lahey singles are cathartically energetic, full of edge and attitude. However, she shows us a softer side with the release of her latest single “Unspoken History” from her recently released album The Best of Luck Club. This tender ballad is somewhat of a departure for Alex, however it retains that honest, storyteller quality we’ve come to know and love.

“When I was in Nashville, I spent some time in a tiny writing room creating songs for this record. Towards the end of that time, I felt as though I was starting to exhaust my output and was starting to become complacent about what I had left to give. On one of my last days there, I was lent a guitar that was set up in a variation on open D tuning, which is something I never play in. In the process of nutting out chords and voicing in this tuning, the melody to the verses just came out. When I started putting words to it, it started off as being about one thing, but then morphed into something else, creating its own path very organically,” she explained of the song’s inspiration.

After recently wowing crowds in the United Kingdom, Alex is in fine form for her The Best of Luck Club tour, which kicks off next week.

Alex Lahey Drops Killer New Single Ahead of World Tour

Alex Lahey is right on track for world domination, and her latest single, “Am I Doing it Right?” will do little to hurt her cause. It’s a classic slice of retro power pop that makes me want to reach for my hairbrush and put on a private show. Alex Lahey Teases New Album With Single Release

There’s just no slowing down Alex Lahey. She’s been touring relentlessly here and abroad, yet she’s somehow found time to record a brand new album. “Don’t Be So Hard On Yourself” is the upbeat first single from her forthcoming LP, The Best of Luck Club.

“I wrote this song for my partner who was on tour and was feeling the fatigue and stresses of the road, as we all do,” she explained. “It doesn’t matter how capable or strong or resilient you may be, we all have bad days, and that’s OK. There’s nothing wrong with feeling tired after a hard day’s work and sometimes I have to remind myself of that too.”

The Best of Luck Club drops on May 17. She’ll take its songs on the road this June.

6 June 2019 – The Governor Hindmarsh, Adelaide
7 June 2019 – Rock Rover, Fremantle
13 June 2019 – The Tivoli, Brisbane

Alex Lahey Drops Indie-Pop Gem “I Haven’t Been Taking Care of Myself”

There’s no sign of second single syndrome from Alex Lahey, who’s just released her brand new pearler “I Haven’t Been Taking Care of Myself.” The second cut from her forthcoming debut album, I Love You Like a Brother, this track is absolutely irresistible. I just love its pop energy and introspective lyrics.

“A lot of the songs on the record are about the relationships that we engage in with other people. ‘I Haven’t Been Taking Care Of Myself’ deviates from that in that it’s about the relationship that we have with ourselves and how that is reflected in the way we bring others into our lives,” Alex explained. “If you feel shit about yourself, you’re generally going to get off on the wrong foot with someone else.”

The single will no doubt encourage more people to see Alex on her I Love You Like a Brother tour, celebrating the album’s October 6 release. Catch her in the capitals and major regional centres next month.

Talented Women Come Together For Electric Lady

I’ve thought a lot more about female voices and the importance of them coming together and speaking up since Donald Trump was elected U.S. president. It seems like we’re at a time in history when things we once took for granted aren’t guaranteed, and we need to fight that little bit harder to be heard. In the spirit of that, it’s exciting to see Australian women coming together for Electric Lady, shows featuring musicians like Ali Barter, Alex Lahey, Jack River, Gretta Ray, Bec Sandridge, Rackett, and Bodytype.

More than live shows, Electric Lady is a platform to amplify the strength of women in such varied fields as music, politics, sport, science, and much more. It will feature interviews with powerful women in a range of sectors including Stephanie Gilmore, Isabel Lucas, Tyler Wright, Katie Mack, and heaps more.

In the lead-up to the shows, Electric Lady will release a series of Live Sessions featuring artists on the bill covering one another’s songs. Click the link to see Gretta Ray’s sublime take on Jack River’s “Talk Like That.” It will seriously stop you in your tracks.

Electric Lady will play Sydney’s Metro Theatre on June 30 before hitting Melbourne’s Corner Hotel on July 1.

Alex Lahey Goes Solo with “Air Mail”

It was only a couple of months ago that I was gushing about Melbourne act Animaux and their awesome single “Come on Over.” I’m about to do it all again after discovering the first track from lead singer Alex Lahey’s new solo project “Air Mail.”

This song is just wonderful, with an infectious energy and charming lyrics. Oscar Dawson from Holy Holy produced the track and also offered his expertise on guitars, keys, and percussion.

“Come On Over” is really good stuff, the sort of music that makes me want to press play again when it’s done. Whether she’s with her Animaux mates or tracking solo, I’m so excited about this young Melbourne artist. We’ll see her debut solo EP released early next year.
