“Stay With the Horses” – Alexander Biggs

Fiercely independent, Alexander Biggs is an artist who plays by his own rules. His music doesn’t sound like anything on the radio. He takes his time releasing it, waiting five years after hitting my radar before unleashing his debut album Hit or Miss and another four years before following it up. But today, we get the opportunity to hear his sophomore effort Stay With the Horses.

Of course, when you’re self-recording, self-producing, and independently releasing your music as Alexander does, you have time. To experience life and find inspiration, to experiment with lyrics and sounds, to get it just right. I hear the benefit of time in these songs. They embody the elements that drew me to Alexander’s music years ago. The hushed vocals have such a quiet power, drawing in the listener and creating intimacy. The lyrics are beautiful, poetic, and authentic. The melodies are simple, allowing us to hear the words that Alexander almost whispers.

But don’t think Alexander’s simply delivered more of the same here. This is everything I love about his music, but better. The melodies seem more approachable and a little catchier. You’re still not going to belt out these songs at karaoke, but you might find yourself humming them unexpectedly. His songwriting has evolved too. I found myself marvelling at his way with words, admiring phrases that hit my ears and heart. Alexander has elevated his music without alienating his fans here. That can be a delicate balance, but he achieves it with these songs.

Stay With the Horses is a really special album. It’s music that matters from an artist that isn’t afraid to buck trends or reveal their heart. Listen to it on your favourite streaming services now or purchase a limited edition vinyl copy here.

Alexander Biggs Releases Introspective New Single, “I Used to Know What I Wanted”

After the frantic pace of Christmas, I’m looking for gentle music that can help me calm down. Alexander Biggs delivers the perfect mellow sounds with his latest single “I used to know what I wanted.” It’s a bittersweet track which encapsulates the mixed feelings of realising a dream, only to question whether it was all worth it.

“I used to know what I wanted” is the latest track lifted from Alexander’s sophomore album Stay with the Horses. Listen out for the album, which sees Alexander navigating emotional peaks and valleys during a period of relentless change, when it’s released on February 7. Alexander Biggs Casts a Spell With “don’t mean a thing”

Alexander Biggs is easing me into my working week with his gorgeous new single “don’t mean a thing.” I’ve long been a fan of his gentle folky music, and this latest track is no exception.

This track perfectly captures the melancholy that can wash over you when seemingly insignificant things seem to resonate a little more deeply with your head and heart than they should. No wonder Alexander’s received support from exciting acts like Julien Baker and Evan Dando. Check it out!

Alexander Biggs Impresses With “pocket protector”

Listening to ‘pocket protector’, the latest single from Alexander Biggs has reminded me just how good he is. I’m not sure whether it’s just new song euphoria talking, but this beautiful understated piano ballad might just be his best yet.

The lyrics, which explore the conflict in a relationship between two people with contrasting lifestyles, are so bittersweet. And then there’s that deceptively simple piano melody which just sweeps you away as it builds to a sonic crescendo. I could not love this more.

Alexander is currently in Austin for SXSW, but hopefully it won’t be too long before he’s back home treating us all to more music of this calibre.

“Hit or Miss” – Alexander Biggs

Looking back through my blog, I’ve admired Alexander Biggs’ music since 2016. As an independent artist, writing, self-recording, and producing his own music, there’s never a lot of fanfare about his releases. They’re quiet songs that cast a spell, providing a few moments of calm in the chaos of the real world. They always leave me wanting a little something more, so I’m thrilled that finally, Alexander has released his first album, Hit or Miss.

If you’re already familiar with Alexander’s music, you know what to expect, and I doubt you’ll be disappointed. If this is your first introduction, it might take you a little time to embrace his songs. They’re much more subtle than music that earns radio airplay or goes viral on social media. But give it time, and I swear it’ll get underneath your skin. You’ll learn to appreciate the gentle strains of acoustic guitar or piano, Alexander’s hushed tones, and the poetic vignettes his words create. The songs feel like diary entries capturing moments in time that fade away all too quickly. There’s romance without schmaltz, bittersweet pain, and emotions kept on the surface. I was familiar with many of these songs, but they’re so much more potent here, with the other tracks providing context and clarity.

I started listening to Hit or Miss this morning. Every time the final notes of the title track faded away, I found myself pressing play again. It’s one of those albums that gets richer and more endearing with every listen. It’s special. You’ll find it on your favourite streaming platforms, but if like me you prefer tangible music, grab a copy of the limited-edition vinyl while you can.

Alexander Biggs Emerges From Lockdown With New Single, “All I Can Do is Hate You”

The COVID-19 pandemic has put a pin in the plans of many of my favourite artists. Alexander Biggs was in the United States, ready to wow crowds at this year’s South by Southwest conference, but we all know what happened. And so he did the only thing he could do, returned home to Melbourne and made new music. The result is what might be his best track yet, “All I Can Do is Hate You.”

This song explores all the complications and ambiguities of love lost. It picks up after the dust settles and explores that idea of feeling so deeply and wanting to be loved so completely, yet being left with emptiness and yearning. It’s painful and poignantly beautiful.

Hopefully this is just the start of a new wave of creativity for Alexander. More like this please!

Alexander Biggs Scrubs Up for New Single Ahead of SXSW

Melbourne singer-songwriter Alexander Biggs has dropped a new single to celebrate his forthcoming shows at Austin’s prestigious South by Southwest festival. “Laundromat” delivers more of the mellow vibes and sweet, poetic lyrics we’ve come to expect from Alexander.

Listening to “Laundromat” is the perfect antidote to the stress of the working week, with all its hustle and bustle. The single version is on your favorite digital streaming services, but I thought I’d share this live version with you. Recorded at Paste Studio in New York City, this video gives you a little taste of what you can expect at Alexander’s shows.

Alex will warm up for his next U.S. dates with a single launch show for hometown fans at Common Rooms on February 21. Americans and expats can catch him in Austin from March 16 to 22.

Alexander Biggs Drops Beautiful New Single, “Madeleine”

He might have just wrapped up some shows in the United States, but it doesn’t sound like Alexander Biggs is in any rush for the fast pace of that nation to influence his music. His latest single, “Madeleine,” is beautifully subdued, a mellow piece of acoustic folk that will help you keep calm even if the pressures of the working week are getting you down.

It’s got a gentle sound, but tune in to the lyrics and you’ll hear something a little darker than you might expect as they explore toxic relationships and the turmoil that comes with them. It’s a gorgeous single that is a real return to form for this talented Melbourne singer-songwriter. Locals can catch him at Longplay on December 7 and 15.

Alexander Biggs Drops Beautiful New Single Ahead of Amy Shark Supports

If you’ve got tickets for Amy Shark’s sold out shows around Australia, make sure you arrive for the support act. Melbourne musician Alexander Biggs has given me goosebumps with his beautiful new single “Dog Boy.” A song penned in a blanket fort in a ground floor apartment in inner-city Melbourne, Alexander says the song is about realising he hadn’t been taking care of himself or loving himself enough and that he needed to do better.

“It’s an old riff from a phone demo that I eventually put together in the fort, writing the lyrics in one sitting because a good song is a finished one,” he said. “The song builds into an explosion of mess and harmony and melody, and I made it that way searching for catharsis, which I hope listeners can feel, and that I feel when I play it.”

“Dog Boy” comes from Alexander’s new EP Whatever Helps You Sleep, which drops tomorrow.
