Queensland’s Red Deer Fest Back

After a one-year hiatus, Red Deer Fest is back in Queensland, bigger and brighter than ever. This year’s event will see Frenzal Rhomb, Andy Bull, Salmonella Dub Soundsystem, Ayla, Hey Geronimo, and heaps more taking over the natural amphitheatre beneath the D’Aguilar range in the Samford Valley.

This is a festival that loves being different. Tickets are strictly limited to create an intimate atmosphere, there are food and market stalls, and camping is encouraged. If you do have your heart set on a night under the stars, be warned though. Organisers have reduced the number of camping tickets available to ensure this beautiful site stays at its best.

Red Deer Fest hits Mt Sampson on October 3. Tickets are available now from the festival website.

Go Star Spotting with Vigilantes’ “Elasticity” Video

Vigilantes have enlisted the help of some of their favourite artists to make the video for their new single, “Elasticity.” Art vs Science, Andy Bull, and Pluto Jonze all appear in the retro-inspired clip, which was shot over three nights around Redfern, Surry Hills, and the Sydney CBD.

“Elasticity” is perfect Sunday fare. It’s danceable, reminding us that there’s still some life in the weekend yet, without being too high-energy.

What do you think of it?

Andy Bull Takes on Okenyo

I must admit, the first time I heard Okenyo’s “Just a Story” it didn’t resonate with me. Perhaps she set the bar too high with the previous single “Broken Chest.” Whatever the reason, I just didn’t love it.

However now that Andy Bull’s worked his magic on the track, I feel like I’m hearing it in a brand new way. It’s so much fun. This is what the song always should have sounded like.

Are you feeling the love?

See Ya 2014!

So here it is, my last post for 2014. Time for me to grab a glass of champers and get the party started away from my computer. But I felt it was fitting to leave you with a little something. So in case you missed it when it was on Triple J recently, here is the final Like a Version for the year, Bluejuice and a host of special guests (including Ngaiire, Elana Stone, the guys from The Griswolds, and Andy Bull) covering “End of the Road.” It’s amazing. Farewell 2014 and bring on 2015!

Andy Bull Releases Another Pop Gem

Andy Bull delivers another stunning track with his new single “Baby I Am Nobody Now”.

Seriously, this guy can do no wrong. This number is every bit as catchy as “Keep On Running”, which became a top 5 global sensation on Hype Machine and was played more than 160,000 times on Soundcloud.

Andy has such an interesting tone and a really smart pop sensibility. I’m sure this one will come close to getting just as many Soundcloud listens. I know I’ve definitely played my part there!

Joshua Radin @ Enmore Theatre, 21 June 2011

After a fairly busy few weeks, I really needed a bit of R and R. I found it this week at the performance of one of my favourite singers, Joshua Radin.

Unfortunately the slow dinner service at the delicious Italian restaurant we found meant that I missed all but the final song of Jim Bianco’s set. I’m really disappointed by that. He had an awesome folky pirate thing going on that I would have loved to hear more of.

Thankfully we were all settled in for Andy Bull. I’d enjoyed the music I’d heard from Andy before, but experiencing it in a live setting brought it to another level. This is probably one of the larger venues he’s played, but he made it feel so intimate with his stories about the songs and sweet, self conscious manner. It takes a very special performer to fill a theatre with just a voice and some keyboards. Despite being excited about Joshua’s appearance, I was a little sad to see him leave the stage.

The last time I saw Joshua he was playing at the uni bar, acoustic and solo for the most part. This show was a bit of a step up, in the hallowed halls of the Enmore Theatre with plugged in band mates in tow. One of the things I’ve always loved about Joshua Radin’s music was its intimacy. These are really small songs made for minimalist treatments. We didn’t always get that at this week’s show. Some songs received frenetic finishes they didn’t really need, particularly by the Danish drummer who seemed he was just waiting to join a big rock band. But for the most part the musical treatments were understated enough to keep me happy.

My favourite moments saw Joshua on his own though, acoustic guitar in hand creating music that was stripped back enough to let his lyrics shine through. Few artists could get away with leaving us with something as mellow as “Winter,” from his first album, but for me this encore was a clear highlight. I also loved hearing “Today,” the song that made me fall for him all those years ago, and my personal favourite “You’ve Got Growing Up To Do.”

Just like Andy Bull, Joshua is one of those special singers who shares himself with his audience. Hearing the way the songs took shape helped me see them in a whole new light, and listening to him speak of his fondness for our country endeared him to me even more.

It had its flaws, but a night with Joshua Radin is always a night well spent. Whether he brings the full band or not, I’ll be queuing up for tickets on his inevitable return.

Andy Bull and Owl Eyes Team Up for Tour

Sydney and Melbourne have a healthy rivalry, but Andy Bull and Owl Eyes are having none of it. The singer-songwriters who hail from the major capitals are putting those old state grudges aside for a double header tour next month.

Andy Bill burst onto the scene in 2009 with his impressive debut We’re Too Young. Last year he gave us the searingly intimate Phantom Pains EP, and we can no doubt expect more songs of personal reflection at these shows.

Meanwhile Owl Eyes is coming off much talked about appearances at Hot BBQ and Pyramid Rock Festival. She’ll treat us to tracks from her debut EP Faces, and a few unexpected tunes.

Here are all the shows where you can see these two incredible singer-songwriters in the flesh!

23 February 2011 – Otis Bar, Wollongong
24 February 2011 – Brass Monkey, Cronulla
25 February 2011 – UNSW Beergarden, Sydney
4 March 2011 – Pure Pop Records, St Kilda
5 March 2011 – Toff in Town, Melbourne

Free Andy Bull MP3 Download

Andy Bull first caught my eye when he made this year’s list of Cleo Eligible Bachelors. But this Sydney muso is much more than just a pretty face.

I love his latest single “Young Man.” This piano-driven slice of pop is accessible yet quirky, separating itself from the current crop of commercial music without alienating listeners. His publicity team is offering free downloads of the track from this website.

If you’re hooked like me, you’ll be happy to hear there’s more where that came from. Andy’s debut album is currently in production so we should see it later this year. In the meantime you can catch him supporting Lisa Mitchell on the last of her shows, or headlining his own gigs at Spectrum. Here are the dates.

6 May 2009 – Mojo’s Bar, Fremantle
7 May 2009 – Amplifier Bar, Perth
8 May 2009 – Jive Bar, Adelaide
20 & 27 May, 3 June 2009 – Spectrum, Sydney
