Anna O Wows Me With “Set It On Fire”

Becoming a mother can be a wonderful time for many women, but it’s not always butterflies and rainbows. Anna O reveals her truth in her powerful new single “Set It On Fire.”

“It’s no surprise that lyrically it was still about this season of life that I was in the thick of … post-natal depression, stay at home mum, no understanding or diagnosis yet for me or my boys. Still unmedicated because I was too scared,” she admitted. “One morning at some inhumane hour I lay awake staring into the dark after feeding my baby boy back to sleep. I was agitated and frustrated, but then this sense came over me that I was about to write a song, which is how songwriting tends to work for me.”

I can’t stop listening to this one. The lyrics are incredible, but I’m also really digging those layered vocals and unique electro soundscape Anna O’s created. Coming hot on the heels of “We’ve Got Time,” Anna O is delivering some of the best music of her career.

Anna O Releases Fantastic New Single “We’ve Got Time”

Boorloo/Perth electro-pop act Anna O has given me chills with her latest single “We’ve Got Time”. This track draws you in with a stripped-back opening verse which showcases Anna O’s vocals before that beat drops. If you love acts like Montaigne and Ngaiire, this will be right up your alley.

I also appreciate that Anna O is a woman who has lived a life because it makes her music so much meatier than your average pop song. Managing life as a mother of two with birth trauma, postnatal depression, physical disability, and undiagnosed neurodivergence, Anna’s relationship with her partner naturally struggled. “We’ve Got Time” came out of that period where they came back to one another despite the obstacles for the sake of the family they’d created.

“This song, for me, is about hope. It’s about the life we are building together now, and making a beautiful situation out of what felt like a very broken one,” she explained. “The last two lines of the bridge say ‘Can I see you right in front of me now? Cos you’re my way home. You’re my way home.’ And that’s just it, we’re finding our way home to each other again.”

“We’ve Got Time” is one of several new Anna O tracks produced by Luke Minness (PRISCILLA, Have a Good Day). Their partnership has led to one of the most productive years of Anna’s life, so it sounds like there’s plenty more fantastic music in store.

Insomnia Inspires Anna O

If you love strong female voices like Kimbra and Lorde, you’re going to want to hear Anna O, a bold new talent from Perth. She’s matched her strong vocals with relatable lyrics in her ode to insomnia, “Sleeplessness.”

“The chorus explores the idea of the ‘choir’ of mind chatter, basically touching on how crazy it is to think about all the people laying awake with their mind going crazy, and what we’d all sound like together,” she explained.

“Sleeplessness” is the first track lifted from Anna’s debut EP, When the Winter Came, which will hit stores on March 21. We’ll all have a day to get familiar with it before she launches it for her hometown fans at North Perth’s Four5Nine Bar on March 22. It should be a night to remember, as Anna is itching to take the stage.

“I can’t wait to get out of the studio and start playing my songs to people.  I’ve got a DJ opening for me and I’m pumped to make it a slamming party,” she enthused.

Tickets for Anna’s launch are available now through Oztix.
