Bacardi Express Photo Exhibition to Open in Sydney

The Bacardi Express has been one of the most exciting concert events of the year to date. Now you can relive all the fun of the tour with an exhibition of rare photographs set to open in Sydney.

New small bar and art space Doctor Pong in Darlinghurst will host the event this July. The exhibition lets you see what this year’s stars La Roux, Art vs Science, Yves Klein Blue, Miami Horror, Cassette Kids, and past acts including Groove Armada, British India, and Van She got up to on board and on stage. All shots were captured by Kent Matthews, one of Australia’s most promising new photographers.

The free exhibition will run from July 1 on Tuesdays to Sundays 6 pm til late. You can expect to enjoy plenty of great music photography, and Bacardi beverages to sweeten the deal. If you’re a Facebook user you can also receive exclusive offers and updates by “liking” the Bacardi Express Facebook page.

Bacardi Express @ Newcastle Panthers, 27 March 2010

Long time readers of my blog would have some idea of the music I embrace and the concerts I tend to frequent. None of these readers would expect to find me at a Bacardi Express show, yet when a couple of complimentary passes were thrown my way I figured “Why not broaden my horizons?”

I felt like a bit of a fish out of water as I queued with all the young things at Newcastle Panthers. I haven’t been into a nightclub for more than a decade, and I didn’t quite know what to expect. I certainly didn’t expect to have such a good time.

After DJ Sampology warmed up the crowds, the Cassette Kids took to the stage. After interviewing them earlier in the month I developed a soft spot for these talented young Aussies, and they didn’t let me down. Lead singer Katrina is such a compelling performer; I couldn’t take my eyes off her. She thanked the growing crowd for arriving early, and they responded to the big hits “Spin” and “Nothing on TV.” They might have been the first act on the bill, but for me they were the best.

I was also impressed with Miami Horror, although I admit I couldn’t place them until they performed “Sometimes.” I hadn’t heard any of their other material before, but their retro pop influences made the tunes feel familiar nonetheless. As a child of the 80s, I really enjoyed their synth driven sound and happily danced along with the growing throng.

Q & A with The Cassette Kids

The Cassette Kids are a band on the brink of greatest. They’ve just come back from some massive shows in the UK, and they’re on the bill for this month’s South by Southwest festival in the United States. Before they pack their suitcases for more jetsetting, lead singer Katrina Noorbergen and drummer Jacob Read-Harber to chat about their busy touring schedule and soon-to-be-released debut album.

You’re generating some major buzz in the US and UK and your debut album hasn’t even been released yet. How does that feel?
K: It’s amazing actually. I know this is a bit sad that I Google my own band name, but I get Google Alerts because I just want to see what’s happening in the blog world. And to see people blogging about the remixes and the film clip and the song and the fact that we’re doing South by Southwest, it’s such a good feeling. Our sights are really set. We’d love to go overseas and do tours overseas and major touring.

You’ve just completed a run of dates in the United Kingdom. How did the crowds there respond to your music?
K: Really, really well. We had no preconceptions about what it would be like. It was sort of a preliminary reach out for anyone that had heard of us, any sort of industry people, to try to create a bit of a buzz. And we ended up playing three shows to basically packed out rooms, especially the last night at The Barfly which is a really well known and established venue. We’ve got an agent now over there, and we were really, really stoked with the response. And we weren’t expecting it by any means.

Your new music video for “Spin” was picked up the American music site Pitchfork. How did that come about?
K: I’m not really sure. I think we had someone in the US, we got someone to try and create a bit of a buzz for us before South by Southwest. And the girl rang our A&R here at Sony and said “Pitchfork want to premiere the clip.” And we had like a Skype thing – we were in London at the time – and we had a Skype thing, and I was just jumping around the hotel on the couches and stuff. And everyone else was asleep. Apparently we’re the fourth Australian band ever to have their film clip premiere on Pitchfork. It was Wolfmother, Crowded House, and INXS I think.

Oh wow. That’s pretty good company!
K: Yeah, yeah. It was pretty big. A major deal for us.

“Spin” comes from your debut album Nothing on TV. What can you tell me about the record?
J: I think the record, it’s fairly eclectic as far as different styles of song go. “Spin” is definitely on the dancier, poppier end of the scale. That kind of stems from our love of dancing and just going out and having fun, and we just kind of wanted for people to have that track to grab on to.

K: It’s a big, festival party song.

J: Yeah, yeah. So that was the intention with “Spin.” The album altogether, we try to showcase a fairly big variety. We’ve got some pretty dark stuff on there as well. It’s not all kind of poppy and commercial. Hopefully we’ll appeal to a wider audience.

“Jam room, bars, being locked in close proximity with a bunch of other musicians for 48 hours – it’s just a unique touring experience, we can’t wait to get on the Bacardi Express,” added Yves Klein Blue.

“Selecting the acts for the Bacardi Express is no mean feat as we need to ensure a good mix of genres and, more importantly, personality and stamina for this 48 hour journey,” festival organisers said.

“Eating, sleeping, jamming and partying in such close proximity is all part of the tour and we have to ensure everyone is up for that.”

Scribe, Faker, and Pnau Play BACARDI Express

All aboard the BACARDI Express! This travelling festival will carry five of Australia and New Zealand’s hottest acts, and a bunch of keen music fans from Melbourne to Sydney next February.

Rock outfit Faker, New Zealand rap king Scribe, and dance duo Pnau are already confirmed to play alongside two bands to be announced later this month. The bands will perform on the train as it travels from Melbourne to Albury, Wollongong, and Sydney.

“We’re looking forward to getting off the road and onto the tracks; off the wagon and onto the rails; out of the frypan and into the BACARDI Express of fire! Choo Choo Huzzah!” said Faker’s Stefan Gregory.

He’s obviously excited, and if you are too make sure you check out the BACARDI Express website. Money can’t buy these tickets, but the site details the ways you can get your hands on them. Of course, since this event is sponsored by Bacardi it’s strictly adults only. Sorry kids!
