Baker Boy Covers Bernard Fanning

I was pretty surprised when I heard Baker Boy had released a version of Bernard Fanning’s “Wish You Well”. But I should have known this wouldn’t be any karaoke cover. The Yolnu superstar has flipped the script here, bringing something new and very fresh to the Powderfinger frontman’s solo smash. Speaking of Bernard, he lends vocals to this incredibly cool new take.

“‘Wish You Well’ is a break-up track, but it’s all about spreading that love,” Baker Boy explained. “The original isn’t really usual for Baker Boy – that vibe. So I wanted to kind of make it into a story where I can also apply it differently and make it Yolŋu flavour. It’s not just in a romantic way, it’s about sharing the love – whether it’s your partner, whether it’s your friends or family … It’s also for the people that are having a hard time right now. I just wanted to spread some love through music.”

Bernard was also full of compliments for Baker Boy and his new version of “Wish You Well”.

“Baker Boy’s music is so full of energy and excitement that I was very happy to collaborate on a new take on ‘Wish You Well’,” he added. “I love the spirit of this new version and am so glad it’s taken such a different musical tack but maintained the buoyancy of the original. It’s the first time I’ve worked in this way, but I found it so easy because the ideas coming from Danzal and Pip [Norman, producer] were so good.”

After delighting crowds on his North American tour, Baker Boy is ready to play local shows. Catch him at Splendour in the Grass or one of his recently announced regional Victorian shows:

Baker Boy and G Flip’s New Track “My Mind” Is Every Bit as Good As You’d Expect

You probably know before pressing play that “My Mind,” the new single from Baker Boy featuring G Flip, is pretty awesome. I’m not sure two such talented people could collaborate and produce something mediocre. So you don’t need me to convince you. Just hit that play button!

“Working with G Flip was a real privilege,” Baker Boy confirmed. “We’ve known each other for a while through touring, but it was mad to see them in their element in the studio. G is a real talent, not only their voice, but their songwriting is like no other! My Mind is a fun tribute to the incredible women in both of our lives, we’re both really lucky to have incredible support networks so really it’s a song for those people too!”

The feeling is mutual, as G Flip gushed, “I’ve always been a big fan of Danzal. We met on the festival circuit over the years and our time slots were always back-to-back, so we’ve had a lot of hang time and a lot of beer time together! I’ve even jumped up and played drums on a track with him before so a song collab was always on the cards. We met up at the studio sometime in 2019 and ‘My Mind’ was written in a day. It’s a song about appreciating the beautiful women in our lives.”

“My Mind” is the latest track lifted from Baker Boy’s highly anticipated debut album Gela. The album title is Baker Boy’s “skin name,” so it’s the perfect choice for his introductory body of work. It drops October 15, but you can preorder your digital, CD, or vinyl copy now.

Baker Boy, Dallas Woods, and Sampa the Great Team Up For “Better Days”

“Better Days” is an exciting new collaboration from Baker Boy, his regular musical partner Dallas Woods, and recent National Live Music Awards Best Live Act winner, Sampa the Great. The track, which incorporates English, Yolngu Matha, and Bemba dialects, was written in 2019. However, its release couldn’t be timed more perfectly.

This is just the kind of positive track about unity and getting through adversity we all need to hear during the pandemic. We might not be able to stop the rain, but at least if we’re together we’ll get through it.

“The whole studio time we had was amazing,” said Baker Boy. “The first time, seeing Sampa actually perform in the recording session, I got a surprise when she started singing. She’s got an amazing voice. I’ve always listened to her rap and to hear her sing, it was a whole other level. In the first part of Sampa’s verse, she’s rapping in language too, that inspires me as well.”

If you love the track, make sure you check out the cool Airwolf remix too.

Baker Boy’s “Move” Is Here to Brighten Iso-Life

Remember that time when Saturday nights were the nights we’d let our hair down and dance ‘til dawn? We might not be hitting the clubs any time soon, but that doesn’t mean you need to give up the dancing. If you’re looking for the right tune for tonight’s dance party at home, wrap your ears around Baker Boy’s new track “Move.”

Its fresh, funky, feel-good groove is just the thing your heart and feet need to survive another weekend in iso.

“I wanted to write a song for my miyalk (girl) but also show appreciation to the women who taught me to respect everyone as my equals,” Baker Boy explained. “I grew up with beautiful spirited women and now I share my life with a strong, empowered woman so I wrote a song for her, and for all the strong-minded women out there.”

“To all my fans, friends and family affected by the uncertainty of COVID-19, I hope this track can help build your spirits, put a smile on your face and most importantly have a little dance. Be safe and keep positive!”

Who’s busting out some moves to this one?
