Bec Sandridge Back and Bringing the Good Times With “Cost of Love”

“If Shania Twain + Daft Punk met at an 80s aerobics class, sweatily hooked up and had a gay baby … she would be named ‘Cost of Love’,” shared Bec Sandridge on her latest single. It’s not a bad description! I also hear a little HAIM influence here. Either way, it’s bloody good fun! Bec’s first release since her 2019 debut album Try + Save Me, it’s a welcome return to the music scene.

“I wrote this song with dear pals Lucy Taylor and Dave Jenkins Jr. At the time, I was stuck in a kind of tug-of-war, arm-wrestle with myself … weighing up whether a certain relationship was worth it (the unraveling of a thread, the push and pull in compromise, digging up old and new dirt),” Bec admitted. “It felt like I had lost myself in a relationship that had a relatively frail foundation. Despite the rocky-ness of the whole thing, we kept trying to build upon it beyond the used-by-date … I guess, we attempted to roll the shit in shit-tonnes of glitter to a degree. This song was my attempt to explore being logical in love and answer the question of: ‘How do you know when to call it before you lose all of yourself and in turn, each other?’”

“Cost of Love” is the first track lifted from Bec’s new EP, Lost Dog, which drops on October 7. She’ll give music lovers a taste of more new material and all their old favourites when she launches “Cost of Love” with East Coast shows this August.

Bec Sandridge Strikes Gold Again With “Stranger”

As if the release of her last stellar single “Eyes Wide Shut” wasn’t enough to convince you to buy tickets for her upcoming shows, Wollongong’s own Bec Sandridge has sweetened the deal with a brand new banger, “Stranger.”

It’s got such an approachable pop sound, but some really deep themes bubbling just beneath the surface. It asks the big questions about whether we can ever really know someone, and even if we can ever really know ourselves.

“’Stranger’ is the proudest I’ve been of any song to date. It’s the most honest I’ve been with myself and others,” Bec said. “At the time I was struggling with image dysmorphia and unable to manage the anxiety that came along with that. I was lucky enough to marry the track with the visuals of diva/director/drag king Tanzer which helped me make sense of a lot of things. I felt it was the first time someone has been able to capture who I am holistically – the ugly, the unhinged, the raucous. I was forced to be comfortable in vulnerability – having a leaf blower on my face certainly helped!”

I really feel like Bec is making some of the best music of her career right now, so I can’t wait to hear her debut album Try + Save Me, which gets released on October 4. Remember, Bec is playing shows all over the country in October. Catch her at the following venues.

Bec Sandridge Releases New Pop Gem, “Eyes Wide”

Listening to Bec Sandridge’s new track “Eyes Wide” makes me want to reach for my hairbrush and use it as a microphone as I break into an impromptu dance break. My cat would probably judge me, but this song is so much fun that I can totally deal with that.

It’s a poppy retro throwback, but one which has a darker side when you dig a little deeper.

“I began to question my relationship patterns during the recording process. I started asking myself is my behaviour instinctual, a long ingrained habit or based on self preservation and protection?” Bec asked. “The song looks at me discovering my own emotional boundaries and limitations.”

Bec has a couple of shows coming up to celebrate the release of “Eyes Wide.” Her hometown fans get a free show at Marlborough Hotel on May 24 before she heads to Melbourne’s Northcote Social Club on June 7.

Bec Sandrige Releases Wild New Single, “Animal”

Bec Sandridge is giving me serious retro vibes in the best possible way with her new single “Animal.” The synth-drenched track has an edgy pop sensibility with stellar vocals that skirt dangerously close to the edge.

Bec describes the track as “the only true(ish) love song I’ve ever written.”

“Occasionally I resort to sort of weaponising my emotions which this song is probably a testament of. I felt out of control in love with an ex (now partner) and I needed to be okay with that and somewhat confess that in this song.”

Bec will play a bunch of shows over the next couple of months to celebrate the release of “Animal.” Catch her at the following gigs.

11 October 2018 – 107 Projects, Sydney
12 October 2018 – UC Refectory, Canberra
19 October 2018 – Schoolhouse Studios, Collingwood
24 November 2018 – Shakafest, Gold Coast

Talented Women Come Together For Electric Lady

I’ve thought a lot more about female voices and the importance of them coming together and speaking up since Donald Trump was elected U.S. president. It seems like we’re at a time in history when things we once took for granted aren’t guaranteed, and we need to fight that little bit harder to be heard. In the spirit of that, it’s exciting to see Australian women coming together for Electric Lady, shows featuring musicians like Ali Barter, Alex Lahey, Jack River, Gretta Ray, Bec Sandridge, Rackett, and Bodytype.

More than live shows, Electric Lady is a platform to amplify the strength of women in such varied fields as music, politics, sport, science, and much more. It will feature interviews with powerful women in a range of sectors including Stephanie Gilmore, Isabel Lucas, Tyler Wright, Katie Mack, and heaps more.

In the lead-up to the shows, Electric Lady will release a series of Live Sessions featuring artists on the bill covering one another’s songs. Click the link to see Gretta Ray’s sublime take on Jack River’s “Talk Like That.” It will seriously stop you in your tracks.

Electric Lady will play Sydney’s Metro Theatre on June 30 before hitting Melbourne’s Corner Hotel on July 1.
