“something new” – Belle Haven

Naarm/Melbourne band Belle Haven really impressed me with their most recent single “fauxlove.” It opens their recently released EP something new with a bang, but there’s a lot more to love on this four-track collection.

“fauxlove” hits hard, but the band aren’t all edges. The next track “lose, regret, repeat…” has more of a pop sensibility and even more vulnerable lyrics. The bittersweet contrast of the happy sound and heartbreakingly sad lyrics is so compelling. “thx” is a high-energy, angsty rock number that puts the pedal to the floor from the first note. “a hypothetical exit” rounds out this stellar collection of song. It’s Belle Haven at their most melodic and anthemic. It sounds fantastic, with massive drums, guitars, and vocals. If you love your emo music, you’re going to love this.

“‘something new’ isn’t about one specific theme or story—it’s a mix of the emotions we’ve been going through as a band,” Belle Haven’s frontman David De La Hoz explained. “We explore love, sex, heartbreak, bad habits (and breaking them), choosing yourself, and even death. It covers a lot because that’s just how life happens sometimes. Each track brings its own feeling. ‘fauxlove’ taps into something raw and intimate, ‘lose, regret, repeat…’ feels deeply sad, ‘thx’ has this angry energy, and ‘a hypothetical exit’ comes off a bit tongue-in-cheek. We didn’t plan to cover all these themes—it just naturally unfolded that way. In a way, we’re still figuring out what Belle Haven is, learning by doing. This EP is part of that journey.”

With the release of something new, Belle Haven continues to show us the depth of their artistry. Don’t you dare put this band in a box, because they’re masters at pushing the envelope and developing their sound. If you love what they do, make sure you check them out at am//pm emo night at Burdenkin Hotel in Eora/Sydney on November 30.

Belle Haven Build Anticipation For New EP With “fauxlove”

I’ve been on a bit of a pop-punk kick at the moment, and I’m not going to apologise for it when our local acts keep making such amazing music. The latest on my radar is “fauxlove” from Naarm/Melbourne outfit Belle Haven.

“Lyrically, ‘fauxlove’ delves into the intricate and conflicting emotions of craving love and intimacy while simultaneously fearing it,” Belle Haven’s frontman David De La Hoz explained. “It’s a paradox that I live every day. The line ‘love me with the lights down low’ highlights the desire to be loved without the vulnerability of being fully seen, while the line ‘sinking into you’ portrays how the pursuit of love can quickly become overwhelming and feel out of my control. This theme is brought to life in the music video through the use of harsh spotlight shots and overwhelming paparazzi-style imagery, effectively illustrating the tension between wanting to be loved and feeling engulfed by that very desire. Or it’s about having sex. Whatever you prefer to take from it.”

If you love this, you won’t be waiting too long for more. Belle Haven drops their new EP, aptly titled Something New, on October 4. To celebrate the release, they’re playing a special acoustic show for hometown fans at Bendigo Hotel that night. To attend simply pre-order the EP through their website or pay $20 at the door and get your copy upon entry. And after that they’re playing a couple of am/pm emo nights. Catch them at Rhino Room in Tarntanya/Adelaide on November 1 and Stay Gold in Naarm/Melbourne on November 2.

Belle Haven Drop “Grimace” Single, Touring With RedHook

If you’re catching RedHook this month, make sure you get there early enough for Belle Haven’s set. If their nostalgic new single “Grimace” is an indicator, you won’t want to miss it. The song explores the insecurity and uncertainty that comes from working in the music industry.

“It is a brutal yet brilliant world to work in, and it takes a certain amount of resilience to be a part of sometimes which is something I think we’ve struggled with over the years.” explained vocalist David De La Hoz. “There’s a sort of irony to this song; we are more excited than ever to be releasing this music.”
