Ben Lee @ Avoca Beach Theatre, Darkinjung Country/Avoca Beach – 5 October 2023

Once upon a time, the people of the Central Coast had to go to Newcastle or Sydney to see major musical acts. Sure, that’s only an hour or so up or down the freeway, but it made midweek gigs with friends challenging. Now it seems we’re spoiled for choice, with venues like Drifter’s Wharf, The Art House Wyong, and Laycock Street Theatre all doing their bit. For mine, Avoca Beach Theatre is leading the charge. In her welcome speech Beth Hunter, who runs the theatre with her husband Norman, told us of the way the theatre’s objective of telling Australian stories has expanded over the years. More than just a movie theatre, it now hosts comedians and live music. Once they aimed to host three live performances a month. Now they aim for three every week. After recent renovations, it’s better than ever. It’s still intimate, holding less than 300 music lovers. It’s retained its heritage charm, but the new chairs are a bit plusher. We’ve even got cup holders.

It’s the sort of place you want to see gigs at. So after years of thinking I wanted to see Ben Lee but never actually buying the tickets, I followed through. It doesn’t hurt that I think Ben’s recent albums are some of his best. The songs from I’M FUN! and Love is the New Rebellion are among my favourites, so maybe it’s not a bad thing that I waited until this stage of his career to see a show. The last couple of years have also brought us DJ DadBod, Ben’s alter-ego and the perfect support act. He delivered a set of fun and quirky mash-ups, singing and dancing along with such joy. It was beautiful to watch.

After a quick break he was back in Ben mode, delivering an eclectic and surprising set with plenty of twists and turns. There were the hits of course, including songs like “Gamble Everything For Love” and “Something Borrowed, Something Blue” that I haven’t thought about for years. A couple who danced to “Love Me Like the World is Ending” at their wedding were celebrating their wedding anniversary at the show. The lyrics resonated so much more knowing what it meant to them. They didn’t take Ben up on his offer of recreating the dance on stage, but I can imagine their happy smiles hearing him sing this song that meant so much to them. I loved the chance to hear newer material that I love like “Crooked Tree” and “Arsehole.” He even gave us a sneaky listen to some beautiful material from an album that will drop next year. After some audience requests, he showed he’s not too proud to go back to the vault, treating a long-time fan to a rendition of “Poison 1080” from the Noise Addict days. That same self-effacing charm saw him launching into songs other artists wrote about him. They weren’t all flattering (Google efforts from The Chaser and The Ataris to hear what I mean), but they were so much fun.

Ben crammed a lot of music into the evening, but he also put so much of himself into the performance. Avoca Beach Theatre is one of those places that brings the audience and performer together in a shared space. There isn’t the traditional divide that exists in larger venues, and Ben seemed to relish that. He noticed when the people clapping along petered out, and heard comments the crowd made. He told us stories of his life and where the songs came from. This is exactly the sort of show I love. If I just want to hear the music, I’ll stay home and listen to a CD. This more personal experience was so much better.

As Ben delivered the one-two punch of “We’re All In This Together” and “Catch My Disease” I started to think there’d be no encore. Where do you go from there? We could certainly leave happy, but surely it’d feel weird for him to just leave without playing the adult game of peek-a-boo we all know and love! I needn’t have worried. It was time for another mash-up and apologies that he’d forgotten his merch. But not to worry, he had Iced VoVos instead! Watching Ben dance down the aisles with his silver platter of classic Aussie bikkies, then don a tinselled rainbow cape for a final boogie, was the most wholesome and perfect way to end this fabulously off-the-wall night of entertainment. Ben still has a few shows left on his Ben Lee vs the Collapse of the Music Industry tour. If you can get some tickets, make sure you don’t procrastinate as I’ve done for years. Get yourself to one of the following gigs:

6 October 2023 – The Baroque Room, Gundungurra and Darug Country/Katoomba
7 October 2023 – Tallagandra Hill Winery, Candariro/Gundaroo
13 October 2023 – Northcote Social Club, Wurundjeri Country/Northcote

“I’M FUN!” – Ben Lee

The release of I’M FUN! comes nearly 30 years after Ben Lee hit the music scene with his punk-rock act Noise Addict. Those of us old enough to be there have watched him grow up in front of our eyes, evolving as an artist and a human. In his 14th solo release, Ben celebrates his status as an adult, husband, and father as only he can. His sound has mellowed along with the themes, taking cues from folk and Americana. However, as Ben shows, there’s nothing wrong with slowing down.

Ben’s never going to be the sort of artist who gets boring in his old age though. He might be happily coupled up, but with “My Adventure” he reminds us that union isn’t about “settling down.” He revels in his unconventional growth in “Crooked Tree” and reflects on how far he’s come in “Arsehole.” “Parents Get High” and “The Good Stuff” also see Ben reminiscing about the past. As someone who refuses to pigeonhole my musical tastes, “Like This or Like That” struck a real chord. Each song is a beautiful snapshot of Ben’s life, exquisitely written and delivered with plenty of charm.

This isn’t quite the album Ben wanted to make. He hoped to record it with a live band, but when the pandemic took hold, like so many of us, he pivoted and started collaborating remotely with long-time friends like Jon Brion and Money Mark and emerging artists like Shamir and Georgia Maq, “who are young and lit up with creative adrenalin.” Megan Washington, Zooey Deschanel, and Eric D Johnson also make appearances. Despite the star power behind it, this album remains intimate and personal. His superstar friends are simply part of the tapestry of Ben’s remarkable life which he honours here.

Listening to I’M FUN! feels like catching up with an old friend. You hear a few stories that help you get to know them better and you have a sensational time doing it. I’M FUN! is out now.

With all of New South Wales either under stay-at-home orders or facing other restrictions and Victoria still smarting from countless lockdowns, I think we could all do with something to look forward to. Ben Lee, Carlotta, and More Heading to Port Douglas Carnivale

I swear no sooner I’m back from a holiday I’m itching to go on another one. If I could convince my husband to get away again, a trip to the Port Douglas Carnivale in Tropical North Queensland next month would be high on my list.

Now in its 23rd year, the family-friendly event continues to attract impressive musical talent like this year’s headliners Ben Lee, Carlotta, Leanne Tennant, and Hillbilly Goats. Other highlights include the Macrossan Street Parade, the Family Beach Day, performances from theatrical troupe La Soiree, and the Tropic Destinations Photographic Exhibition.

Port Douglas Carnivale runs from May 26 to 28. Learn more about this vibrant event at the Port Douglas Carnivale website.

Ben Lee Kicks Off Tour This Week

Ben Lee kicks off his latest lap of the country this week. He’s playing shows in the capitals to promise the recent release of his brand new album Freedom, Love & the Human Mind.

This collection of songs sees Ben contemplating the human condition and his own experiences with characteristic eloquence and heart. The single “The Enemy Within” is an excellent example of the way Ben speaks for all of us who’ve ever wrestled with our emotions and place in the world. It features the talents of celebrated American folk artists Grant Lee Phillips and Sara Watkins.

“Like all the songs on the album, this recording began at my home studio in Laurel Canyon, CA, with a live guitar and vocal – no click track, no tuning, no funny business. Just me singing this song, from my heart,” Ben explained. “It was a beautiful thing to see it take life as I brought in other musicians to add to it, culminating in the incredible Sara Watkins adding her harmonies.”

There are still limited tickets for his shows available, but I wouldn’t wait too long to get yours!

10 & 11 November 2016 – One Space HQ Bondi, Sydney
16 & 17 November 2016 – Wired for Wonder, Melbourne (Speaking)
18 November 2016 – The Caravan Music Club, Melbourne
19 November 2016 – The Old Museum, Brisbane
25-27 November 2016 – Whole Life Expo, Adelaide Showgrounds

“Love is the Great Rebellion” – Ben Lee

Ben Lee is one of those artists that doesn’t like to stay in one musical place for too long. He’s often been angry and experimental, but my favourite Ben Lee is folky, loved-up Ben Lee. He’s the guy who makes very accessible light poppy songs that just make you feel good. That’s the Ben Lee we have showcased on Love is the Great Rebellion, my favourite Ben album since 2007’s Ripe.

It charts some of the same territory as Ripe, but with the wisdom that a happy marriage and fatherhood brings. That wisdom is captured beautifully in the opening number “Giving Up on Miracles,” a song which says goodbye to the romantic fantasies and embraces the reality of a fantastic life. The overabundance of joy in songs like “Happiness” and might be a bit cloying if you’re not in the right frame of mind, but I find such cheer endearing. The mellow, assured knowledge of “The Body of Love” really struck a chord with me. On an album like this even a song called “Everybody Dies” reeks of positivity.

I started listening to Love is the Great Rebellion on a pretty good day which quickly went south. When I was up, it echoed my sentiments. When I was down, stressing about my cat who was admitted to the vets for the second time in a week, it buoyed me. It’s not an album for the cynical, but for the rest of us it’s a wonderful pick-me-up.

Love is the Great Rebellion hits stores on June 2. It’s available for pre-order now with a free download of the single “Big Love.”

Ben Lee Comes Home for Album Release

Ben Lee will return home this April so celebrate the launch of his brand new album Ayahuasca: Welcome to the Work.

As its unusual name suggests, this album is being touted as Ben’s most creative and honest yet. Ayahuasca is a South American vine known as the death vine. South America’s indigenous people used the vine to create the tea they drink as part of a ceremonial ritual. The tea is said to help the drinker see their soul’s contents clearly. And so with Ayahuasca: Welcome to the Work, Ben is exploring his soul and shining a light on the things he’s buried deep inside.

“It’s more devotional music than anything else, but not easy listening,” Ben explained. “It’s demanding, experimental music, just as ‘the work’ itself is demanding.”

Given that the album’s creation is all about healing and discovering a higher consciousness, Ben didn’t feel it was right that he benefit from his profits. And so he’ll donate half of the album’s artist royalties to the Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies and the other half to the Amazon conservation team.

Ben will play the following shows to support Ayahuasca: Welcome to the Work’s April 23 release. Tickets go on sale tomorrow.

5 & 6 April 2013 – Byron Bay Community Centre, Byron Bay
11 April 2013 – Paddington United Church, Sydney

A Baby Girl for Ben Lee

Congratulations to Ben Lee and Ione Skye! The couple are celebrating the birth of their daughter, Goldie Priya Lee. She was born on Thursday September 24 at the very civilised time of 8 am.

Ben said he is “over the moon” at the arrival of his baby girl. He’s already bringing her up right, with a steady diet of Curb Your Enthusiasm DVDs! It’s very important to educate the young! You can see a photo of the pair at Ben’s blog.

Goldie is the first child for Ben, who married Ione in a traditional Indian ceremony last December. She is also mum to an eight-year-old daughter, Kate, from her previous relationship with designer David Netto.

Ben Lee Gets Married … Twice!

Ben Lee has been married twice in two weeks! The Aussie singer-songwriter wed actress Ione Skye in a traditional Indian ceremony on December 29, but as this wasn’t legally recognised in Los Angeles they married again at City Hall.

“You go through a huge experience on an emotional and spiritual level, then you have to go and do the paperwork,” Ben told The Sunday Telegraph.

Around 50 of the couple’s closest family and friends attended the nupitals in Malaikodi, near Chennai on the Bay of Bengal. They included Ione’s brother Donovan Leitch, Missy Higgins, Nash and Joel Edgerton, and Jessica Chapnik. The ceremony was presided over by Ben’s spiritual guru, Sakthi Narayani Amma.

A reception was held at a nearby guesthouse, with Ben’s friend The Kahn Brothers acting as the house band. The newlyweds then took their party to a nearby orphanage, where they proceeded to perform for the children. It sounds like a big day!

Ben might be forced to postpone a honeymoon as he’s due back in Australia next month to promote his new album The Rebirth of Venus.

Ben Lee Goes Indie For New Album

Ben Lee will release his new album The Rebirth of Venus through Brisbane indie label Dew Process.

“I’m thrilled to be signing to Dew Process, a label known to support careers that are eclectic, ambitious and full of integrity,” Ben said.

“I’m really excited about my new album The Rebirth of Venus, and I can’t wait to get into sharing my tunes with music fans across the country, with the support of Dew Process.”

Ben describes his new album, which he recorded in Los Angeles, as “uplifting, joyful, beautifully chaotic, opinionated, passionate, and real.” It also features a collaboration with Missy Higgins called “I Love Pop Music” which I can’t wait to hear!

He’s been stateside for a while, but Ben will return to Oz to perform with the Queensland Orchestra in Brisbane on the 23rd of November and play Perth’s Escape to the Park festival on the 29th.
