Ben Abraham Does Bjork

When I was a teen, all the girls in my peer group seemed to be obsessed by Bjork. I never quite got it. Her music seemed so weird to me, lacking in melody and focus. It really takes an amazing artist to make me appreciate music that had passed me by, but Ben Abraham has done just that with his incredible cover of “Hyperballad.”

I was so surprised when I heard the first of these covers. I loved it. Ben’s treatment really brought out the lyrics, and there’s a lighter, more delicate touch than I remember in the original. I decided I’d post my favourite of the two version I received, but as I listened to the second I realised I just couldn’t choose. They’re both so beautiful and special in their own right.

So tell me readers, can you pick? Do you prefer the version with Luke Howard or Tim Shiel?

Big Bands for Big Day Out

It’s not just a rumour anymore: Björk has confirmed she’ll play the Big Day Out next year.

But the Icelandic songstress isn’t the only big name set to play Australia’s biggest music festival. She’ll join international megastars Rage Against the Machine, Arcade Fire, Billy Bragg, LCD Soundsystem, Dizzee Rascal, and Battles.

There’s also a strong local contingent, with Grinspoon, Hilltop Hoods, Paul Kelly, Sarah Blasko, Faker, Midnight Juggernauts, Something With Numbers, and Cut Off Your Hands all on the bill.

With such an extraordinary line-up, these tickets are likely to be the hottest in town. Make sure you get yours when they go on sale on October 10 for Sydney, October 11 for Auckland, Melbourne, and Adelaide, and October 12 for Perth. To keep things fair Sydneysiders will be restricted to two tickets, while everyone else can buy four.

The Big Day Out festival starts in Auckland on January 18 before flying to Oz.

Björk and Sinead Festival Rumours

The festival season is a few months away, and already the rumour bill is buzzing about who will headline some of the biggest events. If the word on the street is anything to go by, we could see some of the coolest female artists in the world gracing our shores early next year.

Björk has played some big festivals lately, and rumour has it she’ll be the headline act at Australia’s biggest, The Big Day Out. Could it be true? Fans must hope so, as the quirky Icelandic star hasn’t visited Australia in more than a decade.

Apparently Sinead O’Connor has had her heart set on playing the East Coast Blues and Roots Festival for ages, and 2008 may just be her year. Word is she’ll be one of the Byron Bay festival’s major draw cards next year. The coolest festival around is still eight months away, but early-bird tickets are already on sale.
