TSTY Releases Perfect Pop Single, “Broken”

Perth act TSTY reminds us how pleasurable listening to quality pop can be with their new track “Broken.” This is no fluff; it’s irresistibly catchy with just the right amount of edge. Let’s take a moment to appreciate those vocals from Chezni Watson too. They’re powerful and resist so many of the tricks and trills so many modern pop acts overuse.

Before the pandemic broke, TSTY was playing to packed venues in their hometown. Their live sets caught the eye of local producer Michael Bono, who couldn’t wait to work with them.

“I’ve been lucky enough to have worked with world-renowned musicians from bands such as 5SOS, Twenty One Pilots, Blink 182 and Fall Out Boy, and when I saw these guys play live, I instantly knew they had something special,” he said.

Take a listen to “Broken,” and I’m sure you’ll agree with him. The track comes from TSTY’s recently released EP, Stuck in a Photograph.

Supergroup Holidays on Ice Back with The Luxury of Wasted Space

Angie Hart from Frente!, Dean Manning from Leonardo’s Bride, and Stella Mozgawa from Warpaint are back with a brand new Holidays on Ice album. This Aussie supergroup will release The Luxury of Wasted Space on March 31.

The album’s title cheekily references the modern aversion to emptiness, and if the lead single’s anything to go by it’s fitting. The song is very subtle and minimalist, but Angie’s heavenly vocals and their collective musical sensibility shines through. It’s definitely a slow burner, but patient listeners will be rewarded. I also love that, like the album’s other songs, it was recorded in a living room to eight track reel to reel. How old school!

The video for new single “Broken” also shuns modern animation techniques for a more traditional approach. Dean actually made all the puppets in the clip from clay and wood. He even sewed their clothes and made the sets, then painstakingly put the clip together frame by frame.

Holidays on Ice will celebrate the release of The Luxury of Wasted Space with a national tour through April.

18 April 2014 – Smith’s Alternative, Canberra
20 April 2014 – Open Studio, Northcote
25 April 2014 – Glebe Café Church Hall, Glebe
27 April 2014 – Dowse Bar, Paddington

From Ramsey Street to Rock Star

Neighbours star Sam Clark is proving he’s more than just a pretty face with the release of his new single “Broken.”

It’s easy to be skeptical when these soap stars get behind a microphone, but Sam shows real potential here. Big pop-rock ballads like this are a dime a dozen, and Sam doesn’t really bring anything new to the genre, but I kind of like it anyway. He’s got a lovely tone to his voice, and he earns bonus points for playing the guitar and piano (or at least appearing to!)

Do we have another Delta Goodrem on our hands? It’s probably a little early to tell, but Sam shows real promise here.
