Listen To Birdz & Fred Leone’s Poignant Single, “Brother”

Australia Day is a tricky one for me. As an Australian music blog, I feel there’s an expectation that I acknowledge the day in some way. However, it’s been many years since I’ve felt like it’s a day of celebration. And I won’t until we inevitably change to date to one that allows all of us to celebrate together. So what does feel right is taking the time to elevate Indigenous voices, to amplify them at a time when it feels they’re not being heard.

In that spirit, I want to introduce you to “Brother,” a soulful single from Birdz & Fred Leone. Both men are proud representatives of the Ngulungbura clan of the Butchulla nation. Listen in and you’ll even hear Fred singing in the Butchalla language as Birdz raps about his experiences as a First Nations man.

“’Brother’ for me is really about Blak control over Blak affairs,” Birdz explained. “There has been a long history of non-Indigenous people in governments always trying to speak for us and thinking they know what’s best for us and our communities, but we’ve been shouting it at the top of our lungs since the day we were born and the elders before us have been doing that too. They passed the torch to us and I think that’s what ‘Brother’ is truly about and keeping that legacy alive.”

“It’s all in the hook: ‘Brother lift up your brother, sisters, children and all. If they tell you to sit down, hold your head up and stand tall’,” Fred added. “In Butchulla lingo what I’m singing is, ‘Brother, walk with your brother. Go walk and walk out on the red dirt. Walk out onto the red dirt under the stars and when you talk, sit down on the red dirt and look up. And when you speak, don’t speak in English, speak in your grandmother’s tongue’”

I’ve featured “Brother” on my Sounds of Oz Loves Soul playlist, which features a diverse representation of Australia’s best current soul artists including First Nations artists, immigrants, and white Australians. All these voices make Australia great, and I can’t wait until we choose a national day that works best for them all.

Pierce Brothers Drop Gorgeous New Single “Brother” Ahead of Album Release and Victorian Tour

I was already excited about the release of Pierce Brothers’ sophomore album Into the Great Unknown next month, but the release of a new single “Brother” has my anticipation at a fever pitch. It’s a gorgeous slow burner that explores the themes of being away from family. You can bet it’s hitting extra hard with the current Victorian lockdown in force.

The video adds some lightness to this powerful track, as Pat Pierce explains.

“We wanted to juxtapose the earnestness of the song with a bit of a piss-take,“ he said, “We went in there with the intention of playing the whole thing straight, but then when Justin (our older brother) said he could drop in, we thought it would just be way funnier if we tried to do an honest-to-God straight performance, and he just walks through and messes it up for us. We couldn’t stop laughing at the thought of it so we figured, why not?”

Pierce Brothers’ new album Into the Great Unknown drops on March 5. To celebrate its release, they’ve announced a string of shows around Victoria. With limited COVID-safe capacities, gigs are already selling out so get onto those tickets ASAP. If you’re in another state, don’t despair. The lads are planning on getting to you soon.

“In 2021 we’re planning on an entire regional Australia run!” Pat explained, “but the problem is that if we announce tickets too far in advance, there’s risk of border closures between the announce and the date of the gig. We want to avoid all postponing/cancellations of shows so this year it’s announce and GO!”

Matt Corby Plays Gardens

A brand new Matt Corby song “Brother” will hit radio next week. It’s the first track from the Australian Idol graduate’s new EP, Into the Flame. Or if you don’t want to sit patiently by your radio, you could just listen to it here!

I haven’t always enjoyed Matt’s music, but this track feels like his most mature work to date. While many of his tunes have seemed to meander without purpose, this one’s really compelling. If this is a sign of what’s to come this time around perhaps I’d better give him another listen.

To celebrate the EP’s November 11 launch, Matt headed out on the road this week for one of his most extensive tours to date. Called the Secret Garden tour, the shows see Matt playing in some of the country’s most beautiful gardens. These tranquil settings sound a lot more inviting than sweaty pubs with sticky floors!

Tickets are allocated on a first come, first served basis; fans just need to e-mail mattcorbysg@gmail.com with details of the shows they want to go and the friends they want to take (there’s a maximum of four names per e-mail to keep things fair). Tickets cost $20 per person and will be collected upon entry to the event. That money will help Matt continue to do what he does, and help the hosts cover their costs.

It all sounds like such a great concept, the sort of thing we don’t often see in the modern music world. The remaining dates are below if you want to get to one of the gardens, or Matt’s EP launch shows.
