Sound Relief Raises More Than $8 Million for Disaster Charities

Fresh from the news that Bushfire Aid has raised $1.6 million for the Victorian Bushfire Appeal comes official reports of the profits of Sound Relief. The benefit concerts staged in Sydney and Melbourne last month raised more than $8 million. If you’re keeping score, that’s $7,159,760 for the Red Cross Victorian Bushfire Appeal and $874,416 for the Queensland Premier’s Disaster Relief Appeal.

“We are thrilled with the amount of money raised by Sound Relief. It is no small exercise to stage two stadium concerts of such magnitude and the willingness of so many to provide their talent, time, labour and equipment free or at cost has allowed such a significant sum to be raised for the Red Cross Victorian Bushfire Appeal and The Queensland Premier’s Disaster Relief Appeal,” the organisers said in a statement.

“We are proud to have been part of Sound Relief and hope the funds raised will help to heal the communities that have been impacted on by these devastating disasters.”

The concerts reunited classic acts like Midnight Oil, Hunters & Collectors, and Split Enz, and featured surprise duets by Coldplay and John Farnham and Barry Gibb and Olivia Newton-John.

Pendulum Play Secret Show for Britain’s Homeless

Aussie drum and bass outfit Pendulum will join Zane Lowe, Chase & Status, and The Bays for a special secret charity gig in London. The fundraiser will take place on June 17, but the actual venue will remain secret until 24 hours before the show.

The gig is part of the Crisis Hidden Gigs series, which gives fans the opportunity to see top acts in intimate and unusual spaces. They also raise funds for Crisis, an organization which helps Britain’s homeless. By withholding the gig’s details until the last minute, Crisis looks to raise awareness of the precarious plight of homeless people, who often don’t know where they will be from one night to the next.

Tickets for the show are available now from the Crisis website.

Sound Relief for Australian Disaster Victims

The Australian music community, and some exceptional international artists, have rallied together to organize two massive concerts on March 14 to raise funds for the Victorian bushfire and Queensland flood victims. Sound Relief shows will be held at the Sydney and Melbourne Cricket Grounds.

Coldplay will perform an acoustic set in Sydney, while Kings of Leon will play Melbourne. Jack Johnson will also make the long trek from his Hawaiian home to play the Melbourne show.

That’s the young music fans taken care of, but there are plenty of reunions to excite the older generation. Icehouse will reform for the Sydney show, while Melbourne gets a triple treat with Hunters & Collectors, Split Enz, and Midnight Oil all earning a spot on the bill.

Jet and Wolfmother willdo more than their fair share, playing both cities. Each band will perform one city at the start, then jump on a plane to play the other gig. Now that’s dedication!

Tickets for the Sound Relief shows are a very reasonable $75, and all proceeds will benefit the Victorian Bushfire Appeal and The Premier’s Disaster Relief Fund Appeal in Queensland. Tickets go on sale next Wednesday March 4 from Ticketek.
