COTERIE Covers “Slice of Heaven” with Sir Dave Dobbyn

“Slice of Heaven” is one of the great all-time bangers. I remember falling in love with this song as a kid, and it’s lost none of its appeal for me. So I’m thrilled to hear that New Zealand born, Aussie based band COTERIE have brought the song back. They’ve stuck true to the original, even enlisting the help of original singer Sir Dave Dobbyn. However, the instrumentation is a bit fresher for the current generation. Way to bring the nostalgia guys!

COTERIE have just wrapped up a string of dates with the Cat Empire, but they’re not quite ready to slow down. They’ve got a few festival appearances this year before Bluesfest in 2024.

2 December 2023 – Dave Ferrit Festival @ Crooked River Wines, Tharawal Country/Gerringong
10 December 2023 – Let the Good Times Roll @ Memorial Park, Darkinjung Country/The Entrance
28 March-1 April 2024 – Bluesfest @ Byron Events Farm, Cavanbah/Byron Bay

Matt Joe Gow Delivers Stunning Kate Bush Cover

I love a great cover. They started to get a bad wrap around the height of the reality TV singing contest craze, but I think it takes real skill to interpret a song everybody knows and put your own stamp on it. Matt Joe Gow’s take on Kate Bush’s “Running Up That Hill” is the latest cover to delight my ears.

It’s more subtle and sultry than Kate’s version, with a great Americana feel that really brings out the emotion behind the lyrics. If you want to hear it and his fantastic originals live, make sure you catch Matt Joe Gow at one of his upcoming performances.

15-17 November 2019 – Healesville Music Festival, Healesville
7 December 2019 – Bayview Country Art Club, Bittern (with Andrew Swift)

Isaiah B Brunt Brings Back Real Blues

With a name like Isaiah B Brunt, it’s not surprising that the Sydneysider is making blues the way it was supposed to be. He’s got this mellow Delta groove in his music that hearkens back to the greats. When he set about recording his debut album Just the Way That it Goes, he knew New Orleans was the only place to be. I haven’t been lucky enough to hear any of the album tracks, but his cover of Jimi Hendrix’s “Hear My Train A Comin’” is pretty magical.

The album drops on March 26, when he’s launch it at Spring Street Social in Bondi Junction. The album launch is set to be a pretty special night with Isiah performing some acoustic songs along with tracks with a full band. Be there or be square!

Covers Releases Debut Single, “The Automation”

Melbourne trio Covers show they’re not afraid to try something different with their debut single “The Automation.”

I must admit, I wasn’t sure what to make of this track when I first heard it. The unusual instrumentation reminded me a bit of being stuck on an amusement park ride and unable to get off. However by the end of it I was actually enjoying the aural assault. Irresistible hooks and soaring vocals make this interesting song something pretty fabulous.

Do you dig it?

Paul Dempsey Does Karaoke

I’m a real fan of a great cover version, and Paul Dempsey recorded plenty of them during Something for Kate’s recent national tour. He did it without the adulation of the crowd, preferring instead to record his performances backstage and post them on YouTube. This take on Talking Heads’ “This Must Be the Place”, recorded in The Corner Hotel’s male toilets, is one of my favourites.

Hopefully it made the cut for the Shotgun Karaoke EP, a recording which brings together the best of these spontaneous cover versions. Paul will celebrate its October 5 release with a rare solo national tour. Fans can look forward to those special cover versions, tracks from Paul’s solo album Everything is True, as well as some favorite Something for Kate numbers.

Hugo Race Does The Boss

Former Bad Seed Hugo Race has well and truly creeped me out with his moody cover of Bruce Springsteen’s “I’m on Fire.”

The shiver I get listening to this unusual take on the American classic isn’t entirely a bad thing. Hugo’s interpretation gives a malice to the lyrics that I never heard when The Boss was cranking them out. I almost feel like I’m hearing the song for the first time.

This take on “I’m on Fire” comes from Hugo Race’s newly released digital album No But It’s True. The album sees Hugo putting his unique spin on love songs through the ages. It’s available through iTunes now.

Melbourne Musos Cover Nick Cave with “Dig Cave Dig”

Some of Melbourne’s most exciting musicians have paid their respects to one of the city’s most influential artists, Nick Cave, with a new compilation album. Dig Cave Dig is a homage to Nick’s diverse body of work.

A handful of the contributing musicians will be familiar to you, including Little Red, the Vasco Era, and The Fumes, but the CD’s also likely to introduce anyone outside Victoria to a few new up-and-comers.

The selection of songs is stellar if somewhat predictable. That’s disappointing considering Nick Cave’s innovative output. I would have loved to see some new takes on earlier material, especially “Shivers.”  Thankfully though, we do get “Red Right Hand,” “Into My Arms,” and “Do You Love Me?” There was certainly potential to make this a double album, extending it beyond the existing 11 tracks. Still, with great songs and exciting new bands you really can’t go wrong.

Dig Cave Dig is in stores now.

Aston Does Rihanna’s “Rude Boy” Like You’ve Never Heard it Before

Sydney classical outfit Aston have been adding a touch of class to The Matty Johns Show each week. If you haven’t caught their reinterpretations of modern pop and rock songs, check out this reimagining of Rihanna’s “Rude Boy.” I’m not a fan of the original, or of classical music generally, yet I love this. If you do too, make sure you visit Aston’s YouTube page, where you can see more clips and vote for the song you want them to take on next!
