Mark Wilkinson Enlists Famous Friends For COVID-19 Charity Single

Just how much talent can you cram into one track? Mark Wilkinson tests the theory with his iso charity single “We’re Not Alone.” Spotify credits Mark and the Lockdown Choir. But take a listen and you’ll soon realise this isn’t your average choir.

It features the one and only Ian Moss, Dragon frontman Mark Williams, Australian Idol graduates Rob Mills and Damien Leith, Uncle Jed’s Laura Brooker, and talented up-and-comers Patrick James, Rachael Fahim, and Taylor B-W.

It’s a rousing ballad that looks to lift our spirits in these dark pandemicky times.

“I wrote ‘We’re Not Alone’ just as COVID-19 really started to take hold here in Australia. The song was very much a reaction to and a reflection of the emotions the situation evoked in me,” Mark explained. “Along with the obvious anxiety and uncertainty driven by the pandemic, I was struck by the fact that in a backwards kind of way, despite having to isolate ourselves, the circumstances had truly united the world. I wanted to try and write a song that celebrated the world’s resilience and unity in the face of the many challenges brought about by the pandemic.”

In the tradition of the best star-studded singalongs, funds raised from the recording will be divided between Beyond Blue and Support Act. So make sure you download a copy or get streaming to help out these vital charities.

Damien Leith Releases New Song for Mothers’ Day

Mothers’ Day will be here before you know it, and Damien Leith is celebrating with the release of a brand new single “Halfway Heart.” After a recent trip back home to Ireland, Damien discovered that the song was his mother’s favourite from his Chapter Seven album, so he decided it had to be the next single.

Damien penned the song in Los Angeles after observing a couple on a less-than-romantic date.

“Lots of different things inspired this song but especially for me it was watching a couple at dinner one night being really distant and I thought that they had lost the spark or given up on their relationship but kept hanging in there only half-heartedly,” he explained.

Damien’s just released the “Halfway Heart” clip, which was also shot in his homeland. Fans can look forward to hearing this song as Damien continues to weave his way around the country on his national tour. He’ll play the Koroit Irish Festival on April 26, and the Glenn Innes Service Club on May 3.

“Chapter Seven” – Damien Leith

Generally there are two types of former Australian Idol contestants. There are the Guy Sebastians, the Matt Corbys, the Jess Mauboys. They’ve long since shaken off the reality show contestant tag and enjoyed continued success since their reality TV stint. And then there are the Kate DeAraugos, the Natalie Gaucis, the Luke Dickenses. They made it to the pointy end of the competition only to disappear from the musical landscape almost as quickly as they appeared. Somewhere in the middle is a performer like Damien Leith. He didn’t reach the dizzy heights of many of the show’s victors, but he’s refused to just fade away either. Instead he’s quietly devoted himself to his love of music. It might surprise you if you weren’t watching his career closely, but he’s just released his seventh album, aptly titled Chapter Seven.

I haven’t heard too much from Damien in the years since his win, but they’ve served him well. His distinctive soaring voice is in fine form, but he’s learned to reign in his falsetto and use it only for effect. I’m not sure whether that’s about Damien developing as an artist, or if he simply knows that he doesn’t need to deliver the big crowd-pleasing notes that inspire people to pick up the phone anymore. Either way, the vocal performances on Chapter Seven feel really natural and honest.

Damien has a real knack for writing solid songs that have something to say. None of them are catchy enough to really take off on the charts, but they reward the fan that takes the time to listen. “See You Again” captures the feelings of yearning that come from time on the road so eloquently. “I Can Stop You Crying” has such simple, gentle instrumentation which ensures the words aren’t overshadowed. “Faith in Me” is a beautiful song about personal strength.

It’s worth noting that the latter tracks I mentioned were written in collaboration with Joe Melson, the man behind many of Roy Orbison’s biggest hits. Damien’s long spoken of the way Roy influenced his career (and he recorded a tribute album to prove it), so it seems only fitting that these artists are now working together and creating stand-out material.

Damien Leith wears his heart on his sleeve, and that’s so compelling. It’s impossible not to like an artist that so freely shares himself with his audience. He may not be reaching the masses that he did during his time on Idol, but with Chapter Seven Damien rewards anyone that’s willing to listen.

Damien Leith Prepares to Launch “Chapter Seven”

Damien Leith won the Australian Idol title in 2006, but his career since has been overshadowed by the year’s runner-up Jessica Mauboy. Damien’s refused to just fade away though. Instead he’s worked consistently, releasing album after album and playing small venues to promote them. On November 1 he’ll release his seventh, appropriately titled Chapter Seven.

Chapter Seven is a collection of gentle acoustic pop and folk numbers that are clearly close to Damien’s heart. He wrote every one of the 12 tracks, including lead single “Without a Fight,” and recorded most of them in the Sydney studio he built with his own two hands. Damien also produced the album which is his first release as an independent artist.

“In the album I cover a lot of different themes, love, loss and everything in between. But I’ve tried to approach them from a positive outlook,” Damien explained. “It’s true to the style people know me for.”

Damien will introduce audiences around the country to his new songs, and reacquaint them with old favourites, at the following shows.

Damien Leith Covers Roy Orbison

After Remember June, his last fabulous album of originals tanked, Damien Leith is going back to what sells with the release of Roy. The disc is filled with covers of the music of the late, great Roy Orbison.

Roy will feature Damien’s gorgeous cover of “Crying,” which was one of the highlights of his Australian Idol journey, as well as other hits like “Pretty Woman,” “Dream Baby,” and “Only the Lonely.” The album must be something special as it’s got the seal of approval from Orbison’s estate. Roy’s widow Barbara has even served as the executive producer!

“Roy Orbison, his soulful voice and dignified artistry, has touched millions of people across all generations becoming the soul of rock n roll,” Damien said in a statement. “Today, I am very proud to pay tribute to a man whose work has had a direct and lasting influence on both my songwriting and my singing. Mercy!”

Roy will hit stores on April 15. It’s disappointing that Damien’s stunning original albums never sell as well as they should, but releasing this one so close to Mother’s Day is a very smart move. I’m predicting that Roy will give Damien the chart success he so richly deserves.

Damien Leith Releases New Book and Digital Single

It’s an exciting time for Damien Leith fans. Remember June, the lovable Irishman’s second novel, hits stores today. The novel is the follow-up to Damien’s first book, One More Time. The tale tells the story of a family who escaped a turbulent life in Northern Ireland ten years earlier, but are haunted by their past.

Then tomorrow Damien’s latest single “Forgive, Forget” will be available for digital download. The new single ise available as a digital bundle with “Hallelujah,” one of Damien’s signature tunes from his Australian Idol stint.

“Hallelujah is my all time favourite song,” Damien said in a statement. “The lyrics and the melody are both haunting and magical and I am thrilled to release the track recorded in full for the first time ever.”

Damien will perform his cover of this Leonard Cohen classic at the Good Friday Appeal at Melbourne’s Etihad Stadium tomorrow. The charity event will be broadcast on the Seven Network, so Damien fans should make sure they tune in!

As if that wasn’t enough Damien news, remember that he’s still travelling around the country on his Keys and Strings tour. Damien Leith Takes Us Behind the Scenes of "Forgive Forget" Video Shoot

I know there are plenty of Damien Leith fans out there so I figured I’d give you all a look behind the scenes of his latest video shoot for “Forgive Forget.”

Damien sounded especially proud of this song, which he co-wrote with Stuart Crichton (Pet Shop Boys, Kylie Minogue), when he spoke to me last September, and from what we hear of it here it’s easy to understand why. I also figure if you’ve got to make a film clip, doing it lying down is the way to go! That’s great work if you can get it.

“Forgive Forget” was released today, so you should hear it in full soon!

Damien Leith Celebrates Irish Heritage on Keys and Strings Tour

More details have come to light about Damien Leith’s upcoming shows. It seems the intimate concerts will have an Irish bent. The former Australian Idol will embrace his Celtic roots on the Keys and Strings tour.

The name comes from the violin, guitar, and piano that will accompany Damien’s trademark voice. Damien is set to perform traditional and modern Irish hits, as well as some of the best tracks from his new album Remember June. You can expect to hear ancient Irish folk tunes alongside contemporary classics from Van Morrison, Damien Rice, and U2. It sounds like an eclectic mix!

“My Irish background is incredibly important to me and I am thrilled to have the opportunity to take this show to the stage,” Damien said about the upcoming tour.

As a reminder, here are all those tour dates!

Q & A with Damien Leith

2006 Australian Idol winner Damien Leith is back with his brand new album, Remember June, a CD already has the industry buzzing. I caught up with Damien today to chat about the album which he calls “a labour of love,” his new novel, and why he’s itching to get on the road.

I heard you say that creating Remember June is the proudest you’ve been since winning Idol. What is it about this album that’s really excited you?I think really the biggest thing about this album is that right from the onset, I had a concept that I wanted to work off, and everything I did towards making the album, towards writing it, stuck entirely to that concept all the way through. So the whole album hasn’t been swayed either way by thinking “I might need this sort of song” or “I might need that sort of song.” It’s just an album which I personally really wanted to make. Thanks to Sony I got to do that. It’s kind of a labour of love in a way, this album.

Your new single “To Get To You” has a bit of a pop-rock feel, which is something we haven’t really heard from you before. Is that indicative of the other songs we’ll hear on Remember June?
It is. You know, the album’s got a story from start to end. It’s got an intro and it’s got an outro. And to have a story, it’s definitely allowed us to have more up-tempo stuff on the album. But at the same time, I’ve still got some slower songs. But I think overall the sound of the album is big; it’s a big epic or anthemy sort of sound throughout the entire album. So even if it’s a slow song, it’s a big slow song.

So it [“To Get You To”] gives you a taste of the album, but there are some really intimate songs on there which I think are even stronger. They’re probably the stronger songs.

It was produced by Stuart Crichton, who’s worked with the Pet Shop Boys, Kylie Minogue, and so many other big names. What was he like to work with?
He was fantastic. There’s a couple of co-writes with him as well. We did the song “Forgive, Forget” with him and a mate of his, Blair [McKichan] from the UK. He’s not only an amazing producer but he’s an incredible writer as well.

We’ve become really good friends as a result of it as well. We’ve continued to write more and more songs together. He’s just a genius. I can’t get over how quickly he works. He makes a decision and he goes for it. There’s no second-guessing. He just goes for it. I was in awe of the way he works.

It’s been three years since you won Australian Idol. How do you feel about that experience looking back?
To be perfectly honest, for one thing it seems like a long, long time away. The last few years have been so busy with so many different things going on that it seems like a long, long time ago. But I have to say I have no regrets about my time on Idol. Without it I wouldn’t be talking to you today. I would never have broken through.

I think at that stage I was at a turning point in my life where I had to decide: family commitments and work and all the rest, or am I going to give this one more shot. I’d been chasing it for years and years and years, it had been all the usual stuff of demos and gigging here, there, and everywhere for years and years.

It’s not 100% profit-driving, and it does have a negativity associated with it as well, but overall I’m grateful for having been involved.

Remember Damien Leith?

It’s been a little quiet on the Damien Leith front of late, but that’s all about to change with the upcoming release of his new album Remember June.

After a listening party last week the media is already buzzing about this “stand out album.”

“It’s also a wakeup call for the music industry to take Leith more seriously,” added The Sun Herald’s Chris Sams.

It’s always hard to shake the Idol tag, but Damien seems to be trying his best. There are no cover songs, for starters. His sensitive crooning has also been replaced with a little pop-rock edge.

“This is the proudest I’ve been musically since winning Idol,” Damien said. “For me, this album has all the highs and the lows that I would hope for in an album and I can’t wait to get on stage and belt out the songs!”

He’ll be doing that at two special shows coinciding with Remember June’s October 16 release. Damien will play Sydney’s State Theatre on October 16 and Melbourne’s Thornbury Theatre on October 17.
