Plastiq Pushes the Boundaries With “demons”

Usually when I find music I love, I know exactly why it’s up my alley. Very occasionally I find myself scratching my head, but that’s exactly what Plastiq’s new single “demons” has me doing. It’s an absolute trip, totally bonkers, yet strangely irresistible.

The duo, made up of Quartz Pistol and Moses, says “the song explores a dream-like state where the subject explores moving through a world without fear, feeling connected to and held tightly in the bosom of all biological life. The verses are playful and speak of a character hop-scotching across a mossy rainforest floor, facing inner ‘demons’ and accepting them as lessons all whilst letting intuition and child-like wonder guide them. Quartz wanted to capture the serendipitous connection of dots that happens in an altered state of mind or in a dream.”

The release of “demons” caps off an impressive year for Plastiq, who performed at the NGV, exhibited with CAPITAL WASTE in Tartanya/Adelaide, and were nominated for the people’s choice pop title at the SA Music Awards. They collaborated with CAPITAL WASTE again on the video for “demons.” 2024 looks just as bright, with the duo planning to release their debut EP.

Get to Know Ellery Cohen’s “Demons”

If you love pop music that combines catchy melodies with messages that matter, Naarm/Melbourne act Ellery Cohen will be up your alley. His latest single “Demons” is the perfect combination of happy-sad. The lyrics explore some dark subject matter, but those sweet retro synths provide the right balance.

“Demons is a step above what I’ve released before, both musically and lyrically, and it’s more vulnerable than anything I’ve done previously,” Ellery admitted. “It’s a song about accepting the things in life we can’t change. We all face struggles and battle addictions and we wanted to write a song about there being comfort in knowing that all humans struggle and although we are different, we are all the same.”

Ellery worked closely with producer-turned-filmmaker Daniel Kelaart to create a film clip that complements “Demons” perfectly.

“We really wanted a video that showed the message of the song. Demons is all about the struggles we all face in life. The video follows the stories of two people just trying to work through their ‘demons’ in life,” Ellery added. “One is a lady trying desperately to be in a body she loves and the other is someone who is working a job he hates and hoping to get away. I wanted to make a video that hits emotions that we have all experienced in life.”

Hometown fans can catch Ellery launching “Demons” at The Toff in Town this Friday, July 22. “You can expect new songs, high energy, and some very, very bad jokes,” he says. If that sounds like your idea of a good time, make sure you lock those tickets in!

“Demons” – Nathan Cavaleri

It’s been nearly 26 years since local guitar whizz Nathan Cavaleri released an album. Back then he was just 12 years old, a cute kid known for his cancer battle, appearances on Hey Hey It’s Saturday, and of course that talent beyond his years. His whirlwind childhood took a toll and Nathan stepped back from the spotlight to regroup and reassess. Thankfully, after some soul searching, he’s ready to share music with us again. The result is Demons, an album that represents Nathan’s journey and the adult performer he is today.

With the album’s first single, the title track “Demons,” and his latest release, “Before You Check Out,” Nathan shows he’s unafraid of tackling the tough issues. Both songs are introspective explorations of mental illness. Sensitively handled, there’s an optimism about both numbers that balances their dark themes.

The same could be said for the whole album really. While those songs have a suitably sombre tone, they’re balanced with more upbeat tracks like the funky, psychedelic inspired “Castles in the Sky” and flirty “Crush.” A swampy cover of Cold Chisel’s classic, “Rising Sun,” is so much fun. “Drifter” is another standout. Nathan’s voice is solid throughout this album, but this instrumental number lets us focus on his sublime guitar playing. This is where he really shines. The album closes with “Chucky,” a largely instrumental classic blues number that feels so fitting. While it has some vocals, reminding us that Nathan is much more than a guitar prodigy, it’s his skills with his axe that leave the lasting impression.

With Demons, Nathan Cavaleri shows himself to be a master musician, skilled at his craft and unafraid to take risks and innovate. The album roots itself in blues traditions, but Nathan isn’t afraid to take these classic sounds in new directions. A generation of Australians fell in love with Nathan Cavaleri, the child star. Now with the release of Demons, they get the chance to fall in love with Nathan Cavaleri, the man.

Nathan can’t wait to play these songs live, so he’s working with the following venues to play shows in line with each state and territory’s COVID-19 regulations. Hopefully all these shows will go ahead with safe social distancing and other COVID-19 safety procedures in place.

Nathan Cavaleri Lays “Demons” Bare

Nathan Cavaleri had a rapid rise to fame. I remember him as a little tacker playing with Tommy Emmanuel and regularly appearing on Hey Hey It’s Saturday. By the age of 12 he was in the center of a bidding war between the labels of Michael Jackson, Madonna, and Prince. By the age of 16 he’d already toured with B.B. King, played for the Clintons at the Kenny Centre. He rubbed shoulders with Jimmy Page and Mark Knopfler.

His battle with leukaemia at the tender age of seven was well documented. You might assume after beating cancer and gaining global attention for your music, life would be all smooth sailing. But in 2010, his battles with insomnia and anxiety were brought to the fore when he blacked out on a festival stage. The experience shattered his confidence, and he stepped away from his music, expecting he’d never return.

But he did.

“To move through those four years of paralysing anxiety/depression I had to ask myself the question, ‘Why’?” Nathan explained. “Out of self-preservation, I had to find reasons to fight and be ruthless in discarding any reason that wasn’t rock solid.”

In the process he rediscovered the same cathartic connection with music he had all those years ago when facing down cancer. During that time he wrote his new single “Demons,” and the EP of the same name.

It’s a fascinating story, and one that helps you understand the song, but “Demons” is the kind of track that stands up without it. I listened to it before I read the press release and knew where it came from, and was so impressed by the way Nathan’s sound has developed over the years. It’s an incredible track.

Lead guitarist Dan Hoolihann describes the track as “A snapshot of the band’s influences, mixed together to express the relatable feeling of facing the fears and rigorous moments in your life that attempt to overcome you and put you down. It conveys the feeling, idea and emotion of stepping up to face your Demons and the struggle of embracing the difficult issues that life throws at you”.
