“Now and Then” – Eliza & The Delusionals

It feels like I’ve been waiting forever for Eliza & The Delusionals to release an album. I started writing about the band way back in 2018 and singles from this album like “You” and “Save Me” have been out in the world since 2021. However, as the old saying goes, good things come to those who wait. My expectations were high, but Now and Then exceeds them.

It’s hardly the band’s fault that this music has taken so long to reach us though. There was that little matter of the pandemic which made moving forward on so many projects challenging. It was made during the pandemic, but don’t mistake it for a “pandemic album”. It’s far more upbeat than that, focusing on the personal strength and resilience gained during the period than pervading doom and gloom.

Sitting with so many of these songs for so long makes the album feel instantly familiar. We’ve already fallen in love with Eliza’s powerful vocals and the way the band combines rock edge with catchy pop vibes. If you’ve somehow missed all those singles, it won’t take you too long to come up to speed. This music is so accessible, with nods to acts like Michelle Branch, The Cranberries, and even Taylor Swift. Album tracks that are brand new to me like “Lonely” and “All The Time” have become firm favourites.

Now and Then might have taken some time to reach us, but its shimmering optimism is the ideal antidote for the gloomy winter weather setting in. Before the season leaves us, they’ll be spreading their good vibes with capital city shows around the country. Catch them at the following venues:

6 August 2022 – Lansdowne Hotel, Sydney
11 August 2022 – Crown and Anchor, Adelaide
12 August 2022 – Mojos Bar Fremantle, Perth
26 August 2022 – The Zoo, Brisbane
3 September 2022 – Northcote Social Club, Melbourne

Eliza & The Delusionals Get Me Nostalgic With “Give You Everything”

Eliza & The Delusionals are kicking off an action-packed 2022 with a brand new single, “Give You Everything.” This song is everything I love about the band, earnest and emotive with a floaty, fresh feel that encourages you to press play time and time again. It hearkens back to music from so many female singer-songwriters I loved in the ‘90s. If you had Lisa Loeb and Michelle Branch on regular rotation back then, I think you’re going to love this.

Guitarist Kurt Skuse and frontwoman Eliza Klatt started writing the song in Los Angeles with acclaimed US songwriters Sarah Aarons (Zedd, The Rubens, Childish Gambino) and John Hill (Cage The Elephant, Lykke Li, Charli XCX). Some refinements at home make “Give You Everything” the incredible track you hear today.

“We were sitting around John’s studio talking with Sarah about how we both have had similar bitter experiences within the music industry with certain people taking advantage of our benevolence,” Kurt recalled. “It was nice to be able to open up to someone who could also relate to that situation which made the whole writing process feel really natural and organic. It’s a collective favourite for us on the album and it really shaped the rest of the record thematically and sonically.”

As I hinted to earlier, Eliza & The Delusionals are preparing for a busy few months. They’ll support The Vanns on their national tour before taking their own lap of the country as headliners. Then they’re off to the United States to play Bottlerock alongside artists like P!nk, Twenty One Pilots, and Metallica. Their highly anticipated debut album Now and Then also drops on May 20. Eliza & The Delusionals Release “Nothing Yet” Single Against the Odds

The pandemic has posed more than its fair share for musicians around the country, but few acts had it as tough as Eliza & The Delusionals. The band had members living on either side of the New South Wales and Queensland borders, but it wasn’t going to stop them from making fabulous music together. Their latest single “Nothing Yet” is a fantastic indie-rock track that takes me right back to the late ‘90s and early ‘00s. Its fun nostalgic feel is the perfect counterweight for its heartbreaking lyrics.

It’s a sign of the times that Eliza & The Delusionals have had to postpone their single launch shows, which were due to kick off in Sydney tonight. Stay tight for the rescheduling, but it looks like international fans may get the opportunity to see them first. Eliza & The Delusionals will head to Napa Valley to play the Bottlerock Festival this May.

Eliza & The Delusionals Release Shiny New Single, “Save Me”

So today hasn’t been the easiest. Brisbane joins Greater Sydney in lockdown. With the footy in doubt, I’ve realised it might just be the glue holding me together right now. If like me you need to lift your spirits, press play. “Save Me,” the shimmery new bop from Eliza & The Delusionals is just what you need right now.

I’m getting all nostalgic listening to the dreamy vocals and synthy production here. It’s been a long time coming, with Eliza Klatt and Kurt Skuse writing part of the track in Los Angeles, then finishing it in their home studio in Australia. With such a long gestation, the track has gone through a real sonic evolution since its conception.

“We never intended on changing or re-working the song, but a few months later myself and Kurt were having a writing session and came up with this verse idea and new chords that we were loving and we just needed a chorus,” Eliza explained. “I sung the ‘Save Me’ chorus that we demoed just to see how it fit and we instantly fell in love with those two ideas together. It felt like two puzzle pieces that were meant to be together.”

Eliza & The Delusionals’ shows with The Vanns might be postponed, but they’ve got a few solo shows on their schedule. Catch them (hopefully) at the following venues this October:

3 October 2021 – Miami Marketta, Gold Coast
8 October 2021 – The Brightside, Brisbane
9 October 2021 – Oxford Art Factory Gallery Bar, Sydney
15 October 2021 – The Leadbeater Hotel, Melbourne

Eliza & The Delusionals Release “You” Ahead of The VANNS’ Tour

Potsville/Brisbane act Eliza & The Delusionals have just dropped their new indie pop-rock track “You,” and I can’t stop listening. It’s instantly accessible, with a radio-friendly familiarity that quickly forges a connection with listeners. But once you tap into the lyrics, you’ll start to appreciate just how special this song is.

“‘You’ was written as a point of view type situation of any type of relationship where you just can’t possibly do enough for a person, only to have them give nothing in return and pretty much throw it back in your face,” explained the band’s guitarist Kurt Skuse. “Essentially watching someone fall apart and knowing there’s nothing more you can do to help. That’s why it’s called ‘You’, it’s for you.”

For the music video, Eliza & The Delusionals worked with Nick Maguire, who’s also created clips for Cub Sport, Ball Park Music, and Last Dinosaurs.

“We were lucky enough to be able to film the video in a warehouse at Screen QLD, which was really handy as we had multiple large sets to build. It was great for that because we had more than enough space to work out of,” the band said. “We wanted it to be inspired by the 90’s/2000’s outfit and style-wise, and we wanted it to have something that was nostalgic but with a fresh feel to it.”

Eliza & The Delusionals are touring almost everywhere in June and July supporting The VANNS. If you’re lucky enough to have tickets already, make sure you arrive early to catch their set at the following shows. Some limited tickets are still available for selected shows.

Get “Sentimental” With Eliza & The Delusionals

Eliza & The Delusionals are sparking indie-rock nostalgia with their latest single “Sentimental.” Their first release since March’s A State of Living in an Objective Reality EP, the track has that late ‘90s, early noughties cool laidback sensibility that I’m really vibing.
The band has worked with some heavy hitters on the release of “Sentimental.” They co-wrote the track with our own Sarah Aarons (Cosmo’s Midnight, Childish Gambino) and U.S. songwriter and producer John Hill (WAFIA, Portugal. The Man). Producer/engineer Dylan Adams (DMA’s, Skeggs, Troy Sivan) also played his part in the song’s sound.

This song came out of a weird time for the band. “Just Exist” earned enough airplay in the U.S. for the band to lock in their first American festival slots and solo gigs, and then COVID-19 hit. Not a band that’s willing to wallow, this song and other new material came out of a desire to keep moving forward musically, despite the odds.

“We’re super proud of this song, it’s one of our favourites to date,” confirmed frontwoman Eliza Klatt. “Kurt started playing some chords in a tuning he made on the tour bus. We knew we were going in for a writing session, so after coming up with a few ideas around the chords, we brought it into the studio with Sarah and John, and they really helped bring it to life. After having a few months of listening to the demo over and over, myself and Kurt added a bridge and the other parts before taking it into the studio with Ruby and Tex to record it.”

From the sound of things, we’re going to hear a lot more from Eliza & The Delusionals in the near future. And that is a verry good thing.

Rock Out With Eliza & The Delusionals

Queensland band Eliza & The Delusionals are delivering equal measures of sugar and spice with their rocking new single “Half Empty Girl.”

“Half Empty Girl is written about feeling confused with yourself and your decisions in life,” frontwoman Eliza Klatt explained. “I really relate to this as a young person making a career in music where a lot of people can second guess you and tell you how you should do things, which can sometimes make you second guess yourself. The song captures these feelings and the pursuit of better self-understanding.”

Eliza & The Delusionals will play Beach Sounds before joining Luca Brasi on their upcoming national tour. Make sure you arrive early enough to catch them at the following shows.

14 July 2018 – Beach Sounds, Lennox Head
11 August 2018 – Club 54, Launceston (supporting Luca Brasi)
17 August 2018 – The Triffid, Brisbane (supporting Luca Brasi)
