Satin Cali Deliver With “Fool”

Satin Cali are one of Wollongong’s best-kept secrets, selling out multiple headline shows in their hometown. However, with the release of their latest track “Fool,” it’s time for the rest of the country to catch up. This is such a good rock track, I can’t stop listening.

“Fool is a failed love story, taking inspiration from the perspective of letting someone go, only to realise later that they may have been perfect for you all along, and living with the regret of letting that person go and watching them move on without you. Constantly questioning what could have been and the what-ifs of everything in between, while reminding yourself how foolish you can be,” the band explained. “We decided to accompany these lyrics to a more upbeat, happy-ish instrumental piece we had been working on, to counteract and balance the song out a bit and hopefully give a different perspective to the “broken heart” stereotypical tune we all have heard before.”

Satin Cali have a stack of shows coming up including festival appearances and dates with The Terrys, if coronavirus doesn’t get in the way. Here are all the places you can (hopefully!) see them play!

Paige Valentine Wows Me With “Fool”

Perth singer-songwriter Paige Valentine has given me goosebumps this morning with her latest track “Fool.” It’s full of heartbreak and angst, but its summery sound gives it a hopefulness that balances the dark. The lyrics are direct and relatable and Paige’s voice has such an alluring tone.

“‘Fool’ was very much written as a continuation from the story of my first single, ‘Pure’,” she explained. “It examines the complex and melancholy journey through heartbreak, questioning whether the reward was ever worth the risk. It explores the feelings of unkept promises and unfinished plans, while also remembering the nostalgic warmth of a past connection.”

Live music is back in full force in Western Australia. If you’re lucky enough to live there, catch Paige Valentine at the following shows.

11 December 2020 – Assembly Yard, Fremantle (with Riley Pearce)
20 December 2020 – Clancy’s, Dunsborough (FREE)
21 December 2020 – The Quill Collective, Vasse (SOLD OUT)

Sam Phay Impresses With “Fool”

Melbourne-based writer-producer Sam Phay has floored me with his latest offering “Fool.” It’s difficult to believe this is just Sam’s second solo offering. There’s a confidence in this electronic track, yet a vulnerability in the vocals which reminds me a little of works from James Blake and Matt Corby.

Sam took inspiration from Father John Misty’s “The Songwriter,” which he says “really made me think about how I write, and that it is so often through my own eyes. But, so many of my stories had an entire other person experiencing those things with me. I wanted to write the other side of the story.”

“Fool” comes from Sam’s forthcoming EP Botanical, which drops later this year. He’ll play the following shows with Machine Age next month.

20 April 2019 – The Bearded Lady, Brisbane
26 April 2019 – The Gaso Upstairs, Melbourne
27 April 2019 – Oxford Art Factory Gallery Bar, Sydney
