Former Eagle and the Worm Drummer Jim Lawrie Gives Away Singles

To celebrate the forthcoming release of his sophomore album EONS, Jim Lawrie is getting into the Christmas spirit and giving away two singles for free.

They’re both excellent, but “Just Like Normal’s” really bowled me over. What an amazing song that is. With songwriting skills like this, he was really wasted behind the drums of Eagle and the Worm. I’m so glad that he’s gone solo so we can hear songs like that.

If you’ve got tickets for Falls or the Southbound Festival in Busselton, make sure you don’t miss the talented Mr Lawrie’s sets!

Soundslikebrisbane Promote Queensland Music with Free Sampler Album

There are few things I like more than free local music. And there’s some of the best this country has to offer on the free sampler CD from soundslikebrisbane.

Just as its name suggests, soundslikebrisbane is a cooperative of independent Queensland based record labels. Currently there are 17 labels and counting involved, including Dew Process, Plus One Records, Red Tape Entertainment, and heaps more. They’re showcasing the very best that the state’s capital has to offer which is a whole lot of diverse recording. The labels promote a bit of everything, including raw garage rock, smooth jazz, hip hop, mainstream pop, and country.

As a passionate New South Welshmen, perhaps I shouldn’t be throwing my support behind my rival state. But good music is good music, and it’s made even better when it’s accessible to the masses.

Check it out at the soundslikebrisbane website!

Evil Eddie Covers Geto Boys’ Protest Song

I was saddened this week to hear of the death of 21-year-old soldier Jamie Larcombe in Afghanistan. He’s the 23rd digger we’ve lost in the country since 2002, and it makes me wonder why we’re still there protecting a nation with which we have little real ties to.

Brisbane’s Evil Eddie seems just as frustrated as I do, because he’s just released a cover of the Geto Boys’ 1991 underground hit “Fuck A War.” I could have added those polite asterisks I saw in the press release, but we all know what the song’s called!

If your ears aren’t too delicate, you can own a copy of this foul-mouthed protest song for free. Just sign up to Evil’s mailing list by March 11 and he’ll send the MP3 straight to your inbox!

Such generosity isn’t very evil, is it?
