Hoodoo Gurus, The Superjesus, Def FX Ready to Rock Brisbane in Massive Fundraiser

Hoodoo Gurus, The Superjesus, and Def FX are joining forces in Brisbane, and it’s all for a good cause. These Aussie rock heavyweights and plenty of local legends will play Eaton’s Hill Hotel on July 17 to raise funds for Redcliffe’s The Breakfast Club and Rockin’ for the Homeless (R4TH).

The Breakfast Club provides community meals, emergency food packages, housing and service information, supplies, phone charging, and a safe space for isolated and vulnerable homeless people in the Redcliffe area. R4TH is one of their major fundraisers, but COVID shutdowns saw the annual event wiped from the 2020 calendar.

“R4TH does as a community, something we could not do alone. It pays the bills and changes lives,” explained Breakfast Club director and chairperson, Michelle Gilcrest. “R4TH is everything to us”.

This show will replace that annual benefit. Organisers hope the event will help the Breakfast Club buy a “you beaut” van so they can take their services directly to people who can’t visit their centre in person. All musicians are donating their time so the price of your tickets goes directly to this great cause. Tickets are on sale now, but with COVID still limited capacities they will not last long. Get on it!

Stars Turn Out for Road4Roadies

As the Australian music industry slowly gets back on its feet following the worst of the global pandemic, this year’s Roady4Roadies events are more important than ever before. To mark the occasion, Crewcare has enlisted an all-star team of ambassadors. Icehouse, Missy Higgins, Vika & Linda, Paul Dempsey, Brian Ritchie, The Badloves, Catherine Britt, and King Canyon will all take part in this year’s event.

Rewind to 2020 and the Roady4Roadies events were some of the first pandemic victims. Just two weeks out from their 13 events, every one was cancelled. Almost a year later, things aren’t a lot better. While we’re slowly seeing gigs return, the industry is operating at less than 4 percent of pre-COVID levels. But this year at least, there is hope. Road4Roadies gives crew and musicians and day to reconnect with their colleagues and supporters. It’s also a day to raise awareness of the importance of roadies and funds for Support Act’s Roadies Fund, which helps music crew members in crisis.

“I’m in endless awe at the professionalism of music crew, how hard they work and the standard they work to. Us artists literally could not do what we do without a highly skilled team of men and women behind the scenes making it all happen. But it’s a really tough job, working crazy long hours and away from home months at a time. It takes its toll on mental and physical health. Then throw into the mix the past year with restrictions on live events, it’s just been devastating for so many music workers and their families who suddenly found themselves unable to make ends meet,” explained Missy Higgins. “We need events like Roady4Roadies more than ever right now, so we can show our support and raise some much-needed funds for these amazing men and woman who’ve always been the backbone of what we do.”

Roady4Roadies 2021 will be held on April 11 in 10 major cities around the country. Each event kicks off with a leisurely 3-4 km Roady4Roadies walk, followed by family activities and performances. All walkers receive a free T-shirt and face mask with their ticket, which are available now from Moshtix. If you can’t make it, you can also show your support with a virtual ticket. Here are all the sites and times for this year’s Roady4Roadies events.

The Curtin Hosting Girls Rock! Australia Fundraiser

The world of rock music is predominantly a man’s world. However, Girls Rock! Australia gives me hope that perhaps we’ll see more diversity in future generations. At the very least, this organisation will help empower more young women, which is a very good thing.

Girls Rock! Australia is a network of non-profit camps running in Canberra, Melbourne, Brisbane, Wollongong, and soon, Sydney. Each one is open to female, trans, and gender-diverse young people aged 10 to 17. During the camps the young people involved write songs, play instruments, and work together to create music. They’ll also enjoy mentorship and performances from some of the nation’s coolest female musicians. Courtney Barnett, Camp Cope, Cable Ties, Rainbow Chan, and Jen Cloher have all performed at local Girls Rock camps. But these camps are about much more than music though. They help empower women, building their self-esteem and sense of community.

These camps do so much good, but they can’t do it without your support. So Camp Cope, Gen Fricker, Totally Mild, Brodie Lancaster, June Jones, and some other fine musos, comedians, writers, and podcasters will come together for Good Luck #1: A Fundraiser for Girls Rock! Australia. It all happens at October 8 at The Curtin in Melbourne. You get a great day out and every cent collected will help Girls Rock! Australia fund full and partial scholarships. This makes sure all motivated young people can attend these camps, regardless of their financial situation. It’s a win for everybody, so get out and show your support Melbourne!

Triple Treat for Flying Doctor Fundraiser

There’ll be three times the divas at this year’s Altitude event, as Jessica Mauboy, Reigan Derry, and Dami Im join forces to raise funds for the Royal Flying Doctor Service (RFDS) of WA.

“We are very excited that these wonderful Australian artists are performing at Altitude in what is a very special year for us – the RFDS celebrating 80 years of service in WA,” explained the state’s RFDS chief executive officer, Grahame Marshall. “The number of people needing our services are today at record levels and growing every single year with us managing 35,000 patient contacts around the state last year alone, and we want to ensure that we’re still here responding to the needs of the people of WA for another 80 years at least.”

To achieve that, the RFDS needs your help. Tickets to the event aren’t cheap, but you’ll be treated to first-class entertainment and the knowledge that you’re doing good.

Altitude hits Crown Perth’s Grand Ballroom on July 25. Tickets are available online now.

Frenzal Rhomb, Saskwatch, The Smith Street Band & More Play Australia Day Fundraisers

Now that those New Year shenanigans are behind us, we can start looking forward to the next big public holiday, right? Melbournians have their plans sorted with the fifth annual Australia Day weekend fundraiser concerts.

The first show, on January 25, will see Frenzal Rhomb, Saskwatch, Hoodlum Shouts, Hawaiian Islands, Rob Muinos, Have/Hold, Outright, and heaps more take the stage at Footscray’s Reverence Hotel. Then on January 26 The Smith Street Band, The Bennies, MC Joeslistics, Curse Ov Dialect, Fear Like Us, and others will play The Corner Hotel. These events look to fight ignorance, celebrate diversity, and rage against the negative attitudes so often exhibited on our national day.

The annual Australia Day weekend fundraisers have so far raised more than $25,000 for worthy charities. This year all profits will be shared amongst The Asylum Seeker Resource Centre, The Refugee Council, and Oxfam.

Top Aussie Acts Fundraise for Anti-Fracking Initiative

Some of Australia’s most eco-friendly musicians are joining forces for Rock the Gate, a massive fundraising effort for Lock the Gate, the alliance behind Australia’s anti-fracking movement. The Rock the Gate show will see the diverse talents of Pete Murray, The Herd, Ash Grunwald, Tex Perkins and the Dark Horses, Natalia Pa’apa’a Trio, Diesel n’ Dub, Nahko, Trevor Hall, and heaps more rocking Sydney’s Enmore Theatre to support this important cause.

If you don’t know, fracking is unsafe coal seam gas mining. More than half of Australia is under fracking exploration license, despite the international community condemning the practice. But this isn’t the sort of thing archvillain Tony Abbott’s going to worry about, is it? Thankfully we’ve got awesome musos and lobby groups that can shine a light on this important issue.

Tickets are dirt cheap at $75 a pop and all proceeds go directly to Lock the Gate, so snap yours up and support this great cause.

Sound Relief for Australian Disaster Victims

The Australian music community, and some exceptional international artists, have rallied together to organize two massive concerts on March 14 to raise funds for the Victorian bushfire and Queensland flood victims. Sound Relief shows will be held at the Sydney and Melbourne Cricket Grounds.

Coldplay will perform an acoustic set in Sydney, while Kings of Leon will play Melbourne. Jack Johnson will also make the long trek from his Hawaiian home to play the Melbourne show.

That’s the young music fans taken care of, but there are plenty of reunions to excite the older generation. Icehouse will reform for the Sydney show, while Melbourne gets a triple treat with Hunters & Collectors, Split Enz, and Midnight Oil all earning a spot on the bill.

Jet and Wolfmother willdo more than their fair share, playing both cities. Each band will perform one city at the start, then jump on a plane to play the other gig. Now that’s dedication!

Tickets for the Sound Relief shows are a very reasonable $75, and all proceeds will benefit the Victorian Bushfire Appeal and The Premier’s Disaster Relief Fund Appeal in Queensland. Tickets go on sale next Wednesday March 4 from Ticketek.
