“Suburban Daze” – Georgie Neilsen

I’ve gushed over Georgie Neilsen’s singles “Eyes Wide Open” and “Last Time I Felt Better,” so I was pretty thrilled to hear her debut EP Suburban Daze. My expectations were high, but I’ve been listening to little else for the last few days. Yes, it’s that good. There was a big part of me that wondered whether I had enough left to say after heaping so much praise on nearly half the songs. But I couldn’t miss the opportunity to put this music on your radar.

The opening track “A Life In a Day” drew me in instantly. I’m not sure whether it was recorded live, but this song has that organic quality to it. As if Georgie just picked up her acoustic guitar and started to sing from her soul, and someone just happened to hit the record button. With lower production values than the other tracks, you’ve got to really focus to catch all the lyrics, ensuring you stay engaged until the final guitar notes.

The title track comes next, with its drumbeat shocking us out of the acoustic spell. It’s got the rock edge that drew me to Georgie’s music in the first place. Interestingly Georgie recorded this song way back in 2019, but it fits so naturally with more recent creations like “Last Time I Felt Better.” “Eyes Wide Open” has a little more of a pop feel, ensuring we see as many facets of this dazzling artist as we can.

It’s fitting that Georgie leaves us with the jubilant, defiant “I’m Changing.” These songs all touch on heartbreak, emotional turbulence, and the fight for independence, experiences that permanently alter and shape who we are as people, and perhaps as artists. Georgie might be changing, but I’m pretty excited to hear how she evolves.

Suburban Daze is out now.

Georgie Neilsen Impresses With “Eyes Wide Open”

Mondays are never easy, but Georgie Neilsen’s gorgeous new single “Eyes Wide Open” is making my morning a little easier. She won my heart with “The Last Time I Felt Better” in the middle of the year, and this is a brilliant follow-up. It’s such a beautiful blend of folk, rock, and indie-pop influences that’s a little reminiscent of material from Angie McMahon or Tia Gostelow. The big, heartfelt vocals from Georgie are giving me all the feels.

“Eyes Wide Open has gone through many forms,” Georgie admitted. “From a heavy guitar-driven song to a solo soulful folk tune and through drawing influences from HAIM and Katy Perry it has transformed into a sweet and sassy bop about reclaiming power and independence post-heartbreak.”

“Eyes Wide Open” comes from Georgie’s debut EP Suburban Daze, which drops on November 18. She’ll launch the EP for hometown fans in Meeanjin/Brisbane at The Brightside on November 20.

Georgie Neilsen Finds Her Sound With “The Last Time I Felt Better”

Georgie Neilsen wears her heart on her sleeve with her new folk-rock single “The Last Time I Felt Better.” There’s a powerful vulnerability about this song. The lyrics are honest and raw, the vocals straight from the gut, but there’s a real strength about the way Georgie owns her pain here. I’m a fan.

“‘Last Time I Felt Better’ is about the emotions experienced when two people suddenly appear in each other’s lives and instantly fall into a euphoric romance fuelled by an addiction to that feeling,” she explained. “When the relationship quickly hits a fork in the road, there is a realisation that this flame might burn out and it consumes you with the desire to make that feeling last forever.”

The Brisbane-based singer-songwriter has had such an interesting musical journey. Fronting her former band Georgie & The Growing Pains, she played big events like Mountain Goat Valley Crawl and Hidden Lanes Festival. Then she moved into cabaret as a solo artist, selling out multiple shows at Women in Voice, Queensland Cabaret Festival, and the recent Anywhere Festival. And now her sound has evolved again into something so organic and heartfelt.

Georgie will celebrate the release of “The Last Time I Felt Better” with a launch show at The Bearded Lady in Brisbane tomorrow night, June 25. Make sure you arrive early for Meg Ripps and Menajerie in the supporting slots.
