Yorke Releases Feelgood Alt-Pop Single “Gravity”

Yorke’s debut EP Liberosis is one of my favourite releases of the year, so I was pretty excited to wrap my ears around her new single “Gravity.” This upbeat pop number is a departure from the intimate songs on that EP, but it has just the kind of positive vibe I think most of us need right now.

This isn’t your ordinary tale of two people falling in love though. Yorke wrote it about an alien and human falling for one another, but struggling to exist in one another’s worlds. Think “intergalactic Romeo and Juliet,” without the real tragedy.

One thing I really noticed is how Yorke’s sound has evolved. Her EP had a kind of bedroom feel, but this has a real slick polish to it. No doubt that comes from working with some really established acts including Japanese Wallpaper, Finnish producer Hank Solo, and Chris Walla (ex-Death Cab for Cutie).

“Gravity” is certainly a different sound from Yorke, but it’s got me smiling today. Hopefully it lifts you up too.

Short Stack Mounting Comeback

An awful lot of time has passed since Short Stack first burst onto our scene and made all the girls squeal as they’re doing over 5SOS right now. So you might not realise that these Central Coast lads are only getting better. Their new single “Gravity” shows a maturity that only comes with a few more years out in the world.

“Gravity” is the first cut from Short Stack’s new album Homecoming (currently in stores), which has a fitting title considering it coincides with their return to the Australian scene after they relocated to London in late 2014. That decision saw them connecting with legendary British producer Chris Kimsey [The Rolling Stones, Peter Frampton, The Cult].

“We wrote this for about three years, and it’s the record that we’ve always wanted to make,” Shaun Diviney said in a press release. “It’s really raw, it’s really live, there’s not much production, and that means that when we play it live, it comes to life, translates.”

Given the lack of flashy production, we can expect the songs to sound amazing in the live arena. We’ll get a chance to do just that when Short Stack play shows all around the country this summer.

“Gravity” – The Superjesus

“Gravity” by The Superjesus is one of those tracks that takes me back to my angry early twenties. It seems a lifetime ago looking back, but then the crunchy guitar chords and strong vocals of Sarah McLeod definitely hit a nerve. And if I’m honest with you, they still do! Listening to this song it’s hard to believe it’s more than a decade old; how time flies!
