GRXCE Rocks Out With “Gravel Rash”

I am loving the grungy indie-rock goodness that GRXCE are serving up. I got right into their past singles “Everything I Wanted”, “Wasted On You”, and “What U Want”, and I’m every bit as enamoured with their newie “Gravel Rash.” Vocalist Jamila wrote the track about the time her ex-partner had a car crash when he sped away from an argument. That was the final nail in the coffin of this destructive relationship, but at least she got out of it with a fantastic song.

“‘Gravel Rash’ is about the breakdown of an imbalanced relationship,” explains Jamila. “It’s the toxic nature of never having a balance between two partners, which ultimately ends in one person being torn apart and the other making it out with barely any effect on their life.”

“The track deals with a lot of dark imagery from toxic relationships and emotional manipulation, to dealing with suicidal ideation, gaslighting and abuse in relationships which is something I really wanted to be blunt about,” opens up Jamila. “A part of writing and releasing this music was about being honest to myself and embracing and moving past some of the harder parts of my past.”

“Gravel Rash” is actually the first single to make the cut for GRXCE’s debut EP. You know what that means? There’s more new tunes on the way. I cannot wait. Fans might hear a little sneak peek when GRXCE plays shows along the East Coast.

GRXCE Drop Dark Pop Banger, “What U Want”

Eora/Sydney band GRXCE have really impressed me with their latest single “What U Want.” The press release bills them as a pop act, and they’re certainly producing the kind of catchy music associated with the genre. But it’s a little darker and grungier than you might expect. This is pop music with edge, and it’s awesome.

“‘This is the first time I’ve written from someone else’s perspective,” admitted GRXCE frontwoman Jamila Grace. “A friend sent me a song he’d written about a date he went on and this one line about the girl asking to take herself home, rather than be driven by someone else really stuck out to me. I almost immediately started writing the juxtaposing perspective to the story, which eventually transformed it from a song about a bad date into a cautionary tale of bad habits and finally being able to put your foot down to someone who isn’t clear about their intentions.”

GRXCE Challenges Social Norms With “Everything I Wanted”

If you’ve ever felt like pursuing your goals put you out of step with society, GRXCE’s latest single “Everything I Wanted” is bound to resonate with you. It’s an angsty indie pop-rock track which reminds me of grungy female-fronted ‘90s acts like The Julianna Hatfield Three and Veruca Salt, in the best possible way.

“‘Everything I Wanted’ depicts the catastrophisation of the future and the different paths life can take both you and the people around you,” explained GRXCE’s frontwoman, Jamila. “When I wrote this track I was very much grappling with how I pictured my life evolving overtime and my limitations I felt were imposed on me as a woman when choosing my career as a priority over the usual expectations to be a partner, or a mother, or a wife.”

“Everything I Wanted” has a big sound, with layered guitars and bold percussion, but it took some time to get it from the home studio of band member Alex Berger to the track it is today.

“We tracked all the instrumental and vocal parts in Alex’s home studio in his bedroom in Camperdown over the course of a few weeks. In between sessions we had zoom calls with Jackson [Barclay, producer] to hear feedback and discuss the track before jumping back in,” Jamila added. “Finally we travelled up to Gosford and spent a day in Jackson’s home studio to put the finishing touches on the song.”

GRXCE Drops Angsty New Single, “Wasted On You”

Originally a solo project for frontwoman Jamila Grace, GRXCE has evolved into one of the most exciting up-and-coming rock acts on the scene. Now a four-piece, they’ve just dropped their new single “Wasted On You.” This track builds to an epic crescendo, so it’s perfect for releasing any frustration you’re feeling this Friday.

“‘Wasted on You’ is about unconsciously waiting for someone to come back for you and how isolating that feeling is,” Jamila explained. “I was seeing someone who kept swearing the timing wasn’t right and I told myself that I wouldn’t wait for him and I would move on, but then I was kinda paralysed. Without even trying I was turning down advances from other people, isolating myself, staying in his peripheral in case he changed his mind. It put me in this weird stalemate where I didn’t really know who I was if I didn’t want him.”

GRXCE will support Eagle Eye Jones on the Central Coast tonight before heading to Queensland and back to New South Wales. Catch them wherever you can.
