Harrison Craig Swings Around Australia With New Vegas Shows

Critics have long derided The Voice, claiming it gets the ratings but fails to produce stars. Little do they realise many of the talents to come from the show continue to hone their craft and play shows all around the country. One of those hard achievers is Harrison Craig.

He’s set to get the hearts of his largely female fan base fluttering when he takes his latest album Kings of Vegas on the road. It’s a tribute to the greatest acts from the City of Sin including Nat King Cole, the Rat Pack, Elvis Presley, and Tom Jones. Harrison recorded it in Las Vegas with a 90-piece band for that authentic swing sound.

Harrison says he can’t wait to bring those songs to his fans around the country.

“I’m counting the moments down until I can be back out there with my Harrinators!” he said in a press release. “Here we go. Vegas Baby!”

Disney Under the Stars @ Sydney Opera House Forecourt, Sydney – 27 February 2016

Like so many Australians, some of my earliest musical memories came from watching Disney movies. Songs like “We Are Siamese” and “Once Upon a Dream” became early favourites. My parents bought my sister and I the read-a-long books with cassettes, and while the stories were fun, it was always the bonus songs at the end that got us dancing. When music makes such an early impression on you, I don’t think it ever really leaves your heart. So when I heard of the Disney Under the Stars concert, I snapped up tickets.

I expected my husband and I would be one of the few childless couples. However, most of the people in our immediate area were in the same boat, adults unashamed of their passion for Disney. We discussed our favourite movies and characters until Chong Lim and his orchestra took to the stage and treated us to an instrumental medley of some of Disney’s most beloved songs, complete with an animated background of movie moments.

David Campbell, Ricki Lee, Lucy Durack, and Harrison Craig soon joined the musicians for “Part of Your World” from Aladdin. It was a wonderful start to a night that combined nostalgia, magic, and fun, all of the essential Disney elements.
There were so many highlights that took me back to some of my favourite film memories. Ricki Lee might have looked more like Ariel than Lucy Durack, but the blonde stage star carried off the animated mermaid’s signature song “Part of Your World” beautifully. Ricki Lee did her part playing the princess roles too, with superb solo performances of “Colours of the Wind” and “Let it Go.” I’d heard David Campbell sing “I Wanna Be Like You” from The Jungle Book at his shows before, but it lost nothing despite the familiarity. Speaking of David, his performance of one of the songs from The Hunchback of Notre Dame was one of the true showstoppers. I also loved seeing him pal around with Harrison Craig in “You’ve Got a Friend in Me.” A rambunctious group performance of “Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious” had everyone clapping and singing along. The good versus evil dichotomy of Lucy Durack and Ricki Lee’s performance of “Once Upon a Dream” was really inventive, although I can’t help thinking it was a little dark for those little girls dressed as princesses in the crowd.

It’s very hard on a night like this to please everybody. As an older concert goer, I could have done without the three (or was it four?) songs from Frozen played. While I enjoyed “Mother Knows Best” from Tangled and “Touch the Sky” from Brave, I could have easily given them up for a few older Disney tracks. I felt for the woman sitting in front of me who adored Cinderella, yet didn’t get to hear one song from this film. Some of my personal favourites, Dumbo and Robin Hood, were also neglected. But for the younger crowd, there’s never enough Frozen, and those new movies are the one they have fond childhood memories of. While big kids like me could have fun on a night like this, it’s perhaps more important the smallest members of the audience are not left feeling short-changed. Sometimes tells me it’s what Walt would have wanted.

Justice Crew On Top of ARIA Charts Again

It’s a little belated after a busy week, but I couldn’t resist tipping my proverbial hat to Justice Crew, who’ve clocked up their second week at the top of the ARIA singles charts with “Que Sera.” The achievement matches their previous record of two weeks at number one with “Boom Boom.” Could this song go one better?

Sheppard prove there’s still life in “Geronimo,” with the song moving up one position to number three this week.

Sia rounds out the top ten with “Chandelier.” Will her performance on Ellen that’s got everyone talking this week send it back up the charts?

INXS are the best of the Aussies on the albums charts. Their Very Best Of has also had a resurgence this week, rising from number nine to five.

Harrison Craig’s also up the up with L.O.V.E. It moves up one spot to claim number six.

Chet Faker’s holding steady with Built on Glass at number ten.

Justice Crew Score Second Number One Single

Justice Crew have stormed to the top of the charts with the debut of their latest single “Que Sera.” This is their second number one, following “Boom Boom” in August 2012.

One of the other local acts to top the charts this year, Sheppard, are still going gangbusters with “Geronimo,” which sits at number four seven weeks after its release.

Also in its seventh week, global smash Iggy Azalea has moved up two places to sit at number seven with “Fancy.”

Sia’s also showing her staying power with “Chandelier,” which is at number nine two months after its first chart appearance.

We’re also seeing some impressive debuts on the albums charts. Thundamentals have debuted at number three with So We Can Remember, the third album from the hip hop group from the Blue Mountains and their first to grace the top 50.

Byron Bay hardcore act In Hearts Wake will also be happy with the number five debut of their sophomore album Earthwalker. This is their first top ten appearance after Divination peaked at number 27.

The Mothers’ Day rush has helped Harrison Craig hold steady at number seven with L.O.V.E. INXSThe Very Best and Chet Faker’s Built on Glass round out the top 10.

Sheppard and Chet Faker Do it Again

For the second week running we’ve got a pair of Aussies sitting on the top of the charts. Both Sheppard and Chet Faker have continued to dominate the singles and albums charts respectively. With their third week at number one, Sheppard’s “Geronimo” becomes the first song since Guy Sebastian’s “Battle Scars” to enjoy a multi-week run at the top of the singles charts. Chet Faker’s also breaking records. Built on Glass is the first Aussie album to enjoy consecutive weeks at number once since the Sapphires soundtrack reigned in August 2012.

But that’s not the only good news. We’re enjoying a real purple patch, with four singles and six albums sitting in the top 10. All but one album in the top five is a local release too!

Sia is breathing down Sheppard’s neck with her song “Chandelier,” which holds steady at number two this week. Jessica Mauboy and Peking Duk have both fallen a little this week, but they’re still selling well to appear in the top ten. “Never Be the Same” has slipped one spot to land at number seven this week, while “High” has dropped three spots to land at number eight.

Somehow I don’t think Jess will be too disappointed though, as her latest album Beautiful has zoomed from number 17 to number four this week. This is the first time the album’s been in the top 10 since October 2013. She’s just behind INXS, whose The Very Best has dropped to number three this week.

Harrison Craig’s proved he’s got real staying power with L.O.V.E., which sits at number five again. I expect it to linger around a little longer too as we head towards Mother’s Day.

The final two Aussie entries in the albums charts come from Russell Morris and Dan Sultan. Van Diemen’s Land and Blackbird are at number seven and eight respectively.

Sheppard & Chet Faker Complete an Aussie Chart Double

It’s so great to see a pair of Aussies sitting at the top of our charts this week. Sheppard are still sitting at number one on the singles charts with “Geronimo.” Meanwhile, Chet Faker has dethroned INXS on the albums charts. His long awaited debut album Built on Glass has debuted at number one.

INXSThe Very Best is still going gangbusters though. It’s at number two this week.

Russell Morris also has reason to celebrate this week. His new album Van Diemen’s Land has debuted at number four, which is the highest position he’s ever achieved on the album charts.

Russell edged out Harrison Craig, although something tells me he won’t be too upset with his number five debut. The hype around Harrison’s died down a bit as the new season of The Voice is upon us, but with L.O.V.E. it seems he’s still on the minds of music fans.

All those debuts have pushed Dan Sultan down the charts, but his latest album Blackbird is still selling well to land at number six. And it looks like The John Butler Trio’s album Flesh & Blood has plenty of life left in it. It’s actually jumped a spot to sit at number nine this week.

Meanwhile on the singles charts, Sia continues to breathe down Sheppard’s neck. Her song “Chandelier” has bounded up to number two this week. Peking Duk hold steady with “High” celebrating another week at number five. Ahead of her big Eurovision performance, Jessica Mauboy’s shot from number 17 up to number six with “Never Be the Same.” “She Looks So Perfect” by 5 Seconds of Summer seems to be on the way out, slipping to number nine.

Karnivool Scores Aussie Number One with “Asymmetry”

It seems the wait was worth it for fans, who’ve sent Karnivool’s long-awaited new album Asymmetry to the top of the albums charts. One week in and it’s already the fourth fastest selling album of the year. It’s also history making for lead singer Ian Kenny, who becomes the first singer to nab two number one albums in the same calendar year with two different bands. Of course he paved the way for this achievement when his other act, Birds of Tokyo, scored a number one with March Fires in March.

Bliss N Eso’s Circus in the Sky jumped a couple of positions to take number three this week. Harrison Craig shows he’s still a force, landing at number four five weeks after the release of More Than a Dream. His fellow Voice competitor Luke Kennedy rounds out the top ten with his debut album A Time for Us.

Vance Joy’s risen two spots to become the only Aussie act in the singles top ten with “Riptide”. It sits at number ten this week.

Harrison Craig Back on Top of Albums Charts

Harrison Craig proves he’s a force to be reckoned with this week with his album More Than a Dream returning to the top of the ARIA albums charts.

It’s a massive feat for the reigning Voice champion, who kept Jay-Z from the top spot and bumped our own Bliss N Eso’s Circus in the Sky down to number three.

Hillsong Live have also fallen with Glorious Ruins slipping from number three to six.

Josh Pyke made plenty of noise on Facebook this week about stores failing to stock his newie The Beginning and the End of Everything, so it’s impressive to see it still managed to snag the number seven spot on debut.

Troy Cassar-Daley and Adam Harvey are also continuing to make an impact on the charts with The Great Country Songbook. It sits at number nine this week.

We’re back to the usual suspects in the singles charts, with stayers Timomatic and Matt Corby sitting at number seven and ten respectively.

Bliss N Eso Top Aussie Charts

Bliss N Eso have scored their second consecutive number one album this week with their newie, Circus in the Sky. They also hit the top spot with Running on Air in 2010.

With that, Harrison Craig’s debut More Than a Dream was always going to slip, but I’m impressed that his album hasn’t fallen by much. He’s at number two this week, a feat that’s made even more impressive when you consider he’s fended off competition from Hillsong Live. Their albums always sell truckloads, but their latest Glorious Ruins could only manage a number three debut. When was the last time we saw three Aussie albums holding down the top three chart positions? Awesome stuff.

Troy Cassar-Daley and Adam Harvey continue to do great business with The Great Country Songbook. It’s slipped a little, but it’s still finished a respectable number six.

Timomatic and Matt Corby are also still hanging around the singles charts. Timomatic’s “Parachute” has dropped one spot to number four, while Matt’s holding steady with “Resolution” at ten. Samantha Jade’s enjoyed a respectable debut considering how long ago she won The X Factor. Her latest single “Fire Starter” sits at number nine.

Harrison Craig Topples Kanye on ARIA Albums Charts

We came within a whisker of seeing another Aussie act on top of the album charts, but at the final hurdle Kanye West pipped Troy Cassar-Daley and Adam Harvey. This week is a different matter though, with Harrison Craig pushing the American hip hop star from the number one position.

It’d almost be a story of David and Goliath proportions if the sales figures weren’t compared to last year’s Voice victor. Harrison’s More Than a Dream might be on the top of the charts with 13, 167 copies sold. But that’s a far cry from the 35, 621 units Karise Eden’s album sold in its first week. And before you rush and say Harrison’s album was only released midweek, Karise was in the same position. Harrison’s got a lot to prove if he expects to make a lasting impression on the Aussie musical landscape.

Harrison did outsell the likes of Kanye, Daft Punk, and P!nk though, and that’s nothing to sneeze at. It also kept last week’s “almost number one” duo Troy Cassar-Daley and Adam Harvey at number three with their Great Country Songbook. Bernard Fanning’s Departures has slipped a bit, but it’s still selling well at number eight. It’s a similar story for Empire of the Sun, whose sophomore effort Ice on the Dune is sitting at number nine.

Meanwhile we’ve got two Aussies sitting pretty in the singles charts. Timomatic’s “Parachute” has held steady at number three. Matt Corby’s also clinging on to a top ten berth with “Resolution”.
