Em George Wows Me With “Home”

Exploring music from talents like Carole King, Joni Mitchell, and Leonard Cohen clearly hasn’t hurt Eora/Sydney artist Em George. Her new single “Home” is one of the most beautiful songs I’ve heard in some time.

This is one of those songs that stands tall on its own. It’s so well written that it doesn’t need big production. The creative process started in Em’s “tiny” studio apartment before she brought it to Golden Retriever Studios and Hercules Street Studios for the finishing touches.

“My favourite thing about music is it connects you to a feeling or experience. I hope people listen to this song and relate to what I’m writing about and feel connected to those around them,” Em said. “I had been feeling really down, hurt by a lot of people and was wondering why. I was also working and creating at full speed without any down time for myself and was exhausted. I realised I’d been letting people in who I shouldn’t and overextending myself to please others. The song is about creating boundaries for yourself, to not exhaust yourself for others and protect a space within yourself to create, grow and be at peace. But it’s also about being accountable, and realising that you attract what you seek”.

Excuse me while I press play for the umpteenth time.

Ronny Lee Couling Releases Stellar New Single “Home”

British-born and Sydney-based, Ronny Lee Couling is one of those rare talents I’m glad to call our own. His new track “Home” is an uplifting folk track that takes its queues from artists like Mumford & Sons and Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros. You know those organic jangly energetic songs that make you think of road trips and good nights with friends? Full of heart and soul? It’s one of those. And it’s special.

Ronny says “I just want people to feel happy and not alone when they hear my music.” Mission accomplished. This is one of those songs that inspired me to listen to the artist’s back catalogue. It gives you a taste of what he’s all about, but there’s so much more to explore. There’s also more to come. Ronny’s new EP Weatherman will drop really soon.

Eliott Releases Emotional New Single “Home”

Eliott wowed me with her last track “Circles,” and she’s serving up the goods again with her latest single “Home.” It’s a poignant ballad which homesickness she felt after months touring and writing abroad and just how good it feels to reconnect with everything that’s familiar to you. While the song was recorded long before the introduction of border restrictions, the song hits a little differently during the pandemic.

“I think there are so many people at the moment who are away from their home and haven’t seen their family in months,” Eliott said. “I think it’ll really connect with people because of that, but I also hope it makes people take a step back and reflect on the special times they’ve had with their families and really appreciate it.”

The song’s already emotional, but the music video takes the intensity up a notch. It shows Eliott’s family hearing the song for the first time, after they’d spent so many months away from her.

“Home” is so special, but that video is just the cherry on top. Apparently, Eliott has spent the year hard at work on new music, so hopefully this is the first of many new releases we’ll hear in the coming months.

“Home” – Ben Witkowski

2020 might have put us through the emotional wringer, but it’s been an incredible year for art. We might not have been able to see our favourite performers in the flesh, but the lockdown has forced many musicians to slow down and get introspective. That is a recipe for songwriting gold. “Home,” the debut EP from Melbourne singer-songwriter Ben Witkowski, is the latest lockdown-inspired release to capture my heart.

The EP’s name has two meanings for Ben. Of course, there is the physical place, the four walls that made us feel safe, yet imprisoned when the pandemic struck. But home is much more than that, as he explained.

“In 2020 I was feeling very lost with myself and my identity. I thought about the places where I felt most comfortable, relaxed, and the truest version of myself. These feelings didn’t necessarily come from when I thought about the house that I lived in. They were more from a whole range of experiences in my life. Experiences like when I was travelling and exploring through my incredible home country of Australia; when I was with my family, friends, and intimate relationships; and when I was discovering things about my identity by taking chances and embracing the adventure of life. With so many people taking 2020 to reassess what makes them truly feel at ‘home,’ everything just felt right to release these tracks together under that name.”

These folk songs are powerfully understated. The power comes not from big belty vocals or dramatic instrumental sounds, but from incredible, honest songwriting. Ben’s vocals are raw and heartfelt. His phrasing is deliberate, ensuring we don’t miss a word. His lyrics take center stage, cradled by beautiful piano melodies on “Who I Am” and “Rosemary,” by the delicate strains of an acoustic guitar on “Don’t Look Down.”

There’s no filler here. Every song on this five-track collection feels so cathartic. It gives voice to the experiences so many of us have had this year. It also showcases what a special talent Ben Witkowski is.

“Home” is available on all major digital platforms now.

Outer South Delights With Second Single, “Home”

Outer South wowed me with their debut single “By the Morning.” Showing that was no fluke, their second single “Home” has me falling in love with this Melbourne band’s music all over again.

This track has the perfect chilled acoustic vibes for a leisurely Saturday. There’s a beautiful organic warmth about their music. It feels familiar and nostalgic, with those effortless harmonies and acoustic guitar licks.

All this great music is making me pretty excited about the upcoming release of Outer South’s debut EP, We Must Be Dreaming.

Anna Smyrk Releases Stunning New Single, “Home”

Anna Smyrk echoes the sentiments of so many people with wanderlust in her latest song “Home.”

It’s a moving exploration of our personal conceptions of home set against the backdrop of the Solomon Islands, where she lived for two and a half years. During her time abroad she observed the strong connection many of the locals felt to the land, despite the impact of climate change. This connection was in stark contrast to the nomadic existence she’d come to enjoy so far from her home rural Victoria.

“Home” comes from Anna’s sophomore EP, which features more tales of her time abroad. Hear more songs from that upcoming release at the following shows.

19 July 2019 – Oscar’s Alehouse, Belgrave
21 July 2019 – Tramway Hotel, Fitzroy

Cap Carter Releases Beautiful New Single, “Home”

I’ve been sitting on Cap Carter’s new single “Home” for a little while now. I received an early private stream and fell in love with this powerful guitar ballad instantly, so I’ve sat quietly biding my time waiting for it’s official release. I am so glad it’s out in the world so you can hear it.

In this raw, intimate song, Cap gives voice to a close friend’s abusive relationship. It’s an unflinching look at the physical and emotional toll of partner violence which is every bit as potent as his other releases.

Every time I hear something else from this Western Sydney-based singer-songwriter, I fall a little more in love with his music. “Home” is the latest in a line of stellar releases from this exciting new talent.

John Butler Trio Back With Awaited Album “Home”

It’s been more than four years since the country’s highest-selling independent artist delivered a new album. But John Butler Trio is rewarding fans for their patience with a brand newie, appropriately titled Home.

Home will drop on September 28, but John Butler won’t leave you waiting that long for some new music. The title track is out right now. And isn’t it special.

I must admit, as the first notes piped through my speakers I was taken aback. Where were the acoustic guitars? What was with the electronic sounds? It was all so dark and brooding. But give it a minute people. Just a minute. Because this is really good stuff. Yes, it’s a departure. But true artists evolve. I didn’t expect this new direction, but I like it a lot.

“Given the very personal subject matter of these new songs I pondered what it might mean to record in mainly a solo format for the first time ever,” John Butler explained. “(This track) scratches the surface of the emotional and sonic landscape that eventually became the bedrock of the album.”

you’re interested in the new material, point your browser to John Butler Trio’s website. The album is available for pre-order now. The website has a whole range of exclusive bundls including signs CDs, LPs, and other merchandise.

If you’ve missed seeing John Butler Trio live, you won’t be kept waiting too long. The band will launch Home with shows in Australia, Japan, Europe, and North America in the last quarter of the year. With just one Aussie show on the current list, I think we can safely say more dates will come shortly. But for now, put these in your calendar JBT fans!

Little May Announce Global Tour Ahead of Album Release

Little May’s song “Home” has been one of those tracks that’s stuck with me this year. So I was thrilled to read a full-length album isn’t too far away. It seems like Little May’s been on the scene for such a long time that it’s amazing to realise For the Company is actually their debut LP.

The album saw the Sydney band working with acclaimed producer Aaron Brooking Dessner. Little May are big fans of his work with The National, so were excited that he wanted to work with them.

“It was a dream of ours to work with Aaron Dessner. We are so incredibly grateful to have had the opportunity to make this album with him, and Jonathan Lowe, who engineered and mixed the album. Aaron captured the heart of what we are about, and we couldn’t be more thankful,” Little May said about the experience.

For the Company was recorded in the main hall of New York’s Future Past Studios, a converted 19th-century church. The unique setting helped Little May capture an intensity that’s now a key part of their sound.

For the Company will be released on October 9. Little May will celebrate its release with a tour taking in Europe, Australia, and the United States. No matter where in the world you are, here are all the places you can see them play.
