Inland Sea’s Jeremy Hunter Goes it Alone

Inland Sea cofounder Jeremy Hunter is stepping out on his own with the recent release of his debut self-titled EP. The EP is a collection of acoustic guitar-driven folk-rock tunes that should delight fans of the genre. It includes this gorgeous single, “Picking Up the Pieces”.

Less than a month after touring the United Kingdom with Inland Sea mid-2012, Jeremy holed himself up in the mountains outside Brisbane with his pal and producer Konstantin Kersting. They spent three days out of the bustle of the city, crafting the five songs that would become this release. Jeremy impressively played every instrument on the recording to ensure the tracks captured exactly what he hoped to express. Some might call him a control freak; I think the approach is genius.

Jeremy will launch the EP with a show for hometown fans at Brisbane’s Black Bear Lodge on May 26, and another at St Kilda’s Prince Public Bar on May 31.

Inland Sea, The Rescue Ships, and Jackson McLaren Tour Together

Three of Australia’s most exciting new acts – Inland Sea, The Rescue Ships, and Jackson McLaren – are teaming up for one massive tour. The One, Two Ten Tri-Headline dates will see the up and coming bands introducing audiences to their music.

The Inland Sea wowed me with their debut EP Traitor, so I expect big things from the ten-piece’s new EP which will drop while they’re on the road. The Rescue Ships is the latest project for Sydney jazz chanteuse Elana Stone and Canadian born virtuoso Brian Campeau. Their sound is an interesting melding of folk, rock, and pop; think Sufjan Stevens meets the Wainwrights. Jackson Mclaren rounds out the bill, a cute young thing from Warnambool who’s more interested in the classic sounds of Bob Dylan and Tom Waits than contemporary musical movements.

The bands might not be big names, but they’re making such quality music that these shows are sure to be something special.

“Traitor” – Inland Sea

It took just five tracks for Brisbane’s Inland Sea to make a massive impression on me. Their debut EP Traitor is truly something special.

The gorgeous harmonies are what struck me first. Perhaps that’s not surprising, as more than half of the band of ten (yes, I said ten) are vocalists. Their voices come together beautifully, creating a wall of sound the likes of which aren’t often heard.

I was also impressed that a band of ten could create music which didn’t sound cluttered or overdone. Everyone in Inland Sea seems to know their place, and they ensure the mix never gets too complicated.

This feels like the sort of music that hippies might have made while they were communing with nature in some rural setting. Rather than feeling dated, it has that organic and joyful quality to it that I associate with that time period. It’s pure and innocent, with its uplifting lyrics about hearts beating together and jangly folk sound. It feels spontaneous too, as if it came about in a jam session rather than a hard slog in the studio.

Every song is a standout, a tune that draws you in and speaks to the heart. I must have played this disc five or six times today, and I’m still not ready to take it out of my stereo. This EP will be a hard act to follow, but I’m really psyched to see what Inland Sea can create next.

Inland Sea are Something Special

When you bring together ten musicians that are serious about their craft and good music, magic is sure to happen. And there’s magic indeed in Inland Sea, a folk-influenced band from Brisbane.

Their debut EP Traitor was only released around a week ago, and already it’s earning rave reviews and some serious airplay from Triple J. And it’s little wonder, with its gorgeous five-part harmonies and lush sound featuring the mandolin, ukulele, cello, violin, and heaps more. This is the kind of music I can really get excited about.

If you can too, make sure you see the band doing their thing in the flesh at the following shows. The first two shows are free, so there are really no excuses!

28 November 2010 – Brisbane Powerhouse, Brisbane (from 3:30 pm)
4 December 2010 – Rics, Fortitude Valley (from 8 pm)
