Jebediah Release Fantastic New Single “Motivation”

Jebediah seem to be aging like a fine wine. I wasn’t always a fan of their earlier material, but their latest track “Motivation” is right up my alley. It comes from the Jebs new album OIKS, their first since 2011, which drops on April 12.

“’Motivation’ was a song that came from the initial in studio jam sessions that kick started the process of recording OIKS,” the band said. “At that stage, we didn’t really know what kind of album we were trying to make. We were simply getting together in a room and making noise and seeing what eventuated. Given that ‘Motivation’ came from these sessions, it’s a very ‘band’ sounding song, as opposed to some of the more experimental stuff that came along later during the recording process. It captures the sound of the band playing in a room together and we tried not to embellish it too much. This song is a bit of a band favourite for sure, so we are obviously excited about it being released as a single before the album appears.”

“The video clip is intended to represent the simplicity of the song and the fact that we were trying to capture the raw sound of the band playing in a room together,” they added. “The video was shot in Melbourne by Arlo Cook who has been following us around with a camera since 2015, taking footage at shows all around Australia. We can’t wait for everyone to hear OIKS soon. It was a labour of love that took us five years to complete, often during extremely turbulent times.”

Jebediah has just played Spring Loaded, but I’d be very surprised if we don’t see a few more show announcements when the album’s released. Until then, turn this new single up!

Jebediah Albums Finally Released Online

After a hiatus that stretched far too long, Jebediah are finally back together and in the studio preparing a brand new album for our listening pleasure. To celebrate, Sony Music has gone back in the vault to release a digital box set of the band’s first three studio albums.

Slightly Odway, Of Someday Shambles, and Jebediah will be available as a set called The Murmur Years 1997-2002, or individually. While you’re updating your MP3 collection you can also add the now out-of-print Gleesides and Sparities, and the indie release Braxton Hicks.

All that Jebediah goodness should get you in the mood for the newie, which will drop some time next year.

Q & A With Jebediah's Brett Mitchell

As a teen growing up in Australia, the songs of Jebediah formed the soundtrack of my senior high school years. Songs like “Leaving Home” and “Animal” were all over radio, but after four big albums the band packed it all in. Kevin Mitchell reinvented himself as Bob Evans, and it seemed these Aussie rockers were destined to become but a memory.

Thankfully the band has realised there’s a lot more rock left in them. They’re back together, recording a new album and playing some big shows, including next month’s Blueprint festival. I recently caught up with the band’s drummer Brett Mitchell to chat about what it’s like to be back.

You’ve taken a lengthy break from the music scene. What inspired you to get back out there?
We’ve pretty much always been keen to keep it rolling as circumstances permit. Kev has his Bob Evans commitments, Ness is finishing up a degree and Chris and I both have full time jobs. Also Kev is living in Melbourne now. So between all those things if we get offered a show or start feeling itchy to do a small run of dates, we’ll arrange it. Basically it’s a hobby now that we will be able to indulge in sporadically, as long as everybody is still prepared to make the time for it. I hope this situation continues for a long time.

Is anything different for the band this time around?
I think it’s one of those things in life that will always feel the same on an emotional level – although the physical side changes a bit – we’re not in our twenties anymore. So yes there are differences to do with time and money, and perhaps we have to work harder to prepare for live shows, but apart from that it’s not changed much. I do think you appreciate fun stuff more when there are other things in your life to provide a contrast!

How have the crowds reacted to your return?
You would have to ask them! It seems pretty positive though. I guess that some of the audience are enjoying it on more of a nostalgic level which is fine by us.

Why did you want to be a part of the upcoming Blueprint festival?
Because we were asked! Shows like this will be a rarity for us now so we will always appreciate the opportunity to be involved – it’s a privilege really. The lineup is very cool and quite eclectic. One of the most difficult aspects for us now is working out which songs to include in the set.
