Julia Stone Announces Solo Aussie Tour

If you missed out on tickets for Julia Stone’s solo show in Sydney tonight, you’re in luck. The songbird is planning a more extensive tour this September to support the release of her debut solo album By the Horns.

Tonight’s Sydney show is part of a whirlwind world tour, which has seen her selling out shows in Paris, London, Berlin, New York, Los Angeles, and the Harbour City. In contrast, the September tour will see Julia playing small venues in Australia’s major capitals and regional centres.

Members of Julia’s fan clubs get first dibs with a pre-sale tomorrow before the general sale on Thursday, June 15.

Julia Stone Announces Solo World Tour

Julia Stone will launch her forthcoming solo album By the Horns with a whirlwind world tour. The folk singer will play one show in every country she visits on this exciting launch tour.

The tour will take Julia to intimate venues in Europe, the United Kingdom, and the United States, before she arrives home in Australia. By the Horns will hit Aussie record stores May 25, so local fans have a little time to familiarise themselves with the songs before the Sydney show on June 13.

Tickets are on sale now for the following album launch shows. With just one show per country, I don’t expect any of those tickets to last too long!

20 April 2012 – De Duif, Amsterdam
23 April 2012 – Rotor Salon, Berlin
24 April 2012 –Café de La Danse, Paris
26 April 2012 –Studio Private, London

Julia Stone Goes Solo with New Album

Julia Stone is rarely seen without her brother Angus in tow, so I was pleasantly surprised to hear she’s recorded a solo album.

The disc is currently being mixed and will be available for purchase at Angus & Julia Stone’s upcoming Australian concerts. There’s no word yet on an official release for record stores, but hopefully it won’t be too far behind.

In an interview with TMN, Julia says she hasn’t settled on a name for the album as she’s still tossing up between The Memory Machine and Winter on the Weekend.

If you want to get your hands on Julia Stone’s album before anyone else, whatever it’s called, make sure you get yourself to one of the following shows.

“Beard of Bees” – Jez Mead

Nursing a post-Eurovision hangover, I needed just the right music to survive my Monday morning. I found it in Beard of Bees, the fantastic fourth album from Jez Mead.

It’s amazing that this guy has been releasing albums for so many years, yet he hasn’t crossed my radar until now. It’s a case of better late than never though. This record is accessible yet rich, just like Jez’s voice. His bluesy rasp brings a depth to the stripped back songs. The raw delivery is perfect for creating an air of honesty and spontaneity; I imagine these songs wouldn’t sound very different if you saw them performed in your local pub. There’s that same electricity that you feel while listening to a live set, that impalpable feeling that anything could happen.

The tunes are an eclectic mix, yet the pieces fit together beautifully. The title track is a rollicking acoustic alt-country number. “Town’s Too Small” feels as if it could have been plucked straight from the Deep South, with its hand-clapping rhythm and swampy feel. As with anything that Julia Stone touches, the duet “Devil” is delicate and gorgeous. The tender closer “Crooked” is blessedly understated and lovely.

Beard of Bees is a lush, complex album that has quite simply cast a spell over me. If like me you’d never heard of Jez Mead, this should be the record to change all that. Beard of Bees will be released on June 25.
