Kim Churchill Releases New Single “Second Hand Car” Ahead of Anticipated New Album

Kim Churchill is preparing to release his long-awaited new album Weight Falls, but there’s a good reason fans have been left waiting.

Kim spent 18 months working on the album, his follow-up to Silence/Win. While the end result was polished and accessible, for Kim it just didn’t feel quite right. So he scrapped it and started anew.

“I worked really hard on the follow-up record for a long time,” he explained, “and it sounded good. But some very subtle layer of my consciousness was saying to me, ‘It’s not all that inspiring.’”
He picked up his guitar and created a new batch of songs in just one week. It took another two months piecing the new songs together with his producer Ian Pritchett in a Western Sydney garage. I’m a big believer that the best things happen when you’re not overthinking them, so I’m really excited by this album.

Kim’s new single “Second Hand Car” is one of the new songs that’s passed muster. It’s got a great easy vibe that feels perfect for long road trips.

Weight Falls is finally released on August 25. If you preorder it, you’ll get an instantly download of “Second Hand Car.” Once the album drops, you’ve got a few weeks to learn the lyrics before Kim sets off on a massive tour around the country. Tickets are on sale now through his website.

Kim Churchill Tours “Single Spark”

Kim Churchill will be spreading good vibes across Australia this summer as he sets out on his Single Spark tour. The shows will celebrate the recent release of the feel-good song “Single Spark,” the opening track from his latest album Silence/Win.

Kim’s been having an amazing ride for someone who grew up in coastal Merimbula. At just 24 years old he’s already played Glastonbury, the Montreal Jazz Festival, and the intimate Telluride Blues and Brews festival in the US. He’s also opened for the lines of Billy Bragg and Michael Franti, and been the headliner on tours across the United Kingdom, Europe, and Canada.

After all that it’s a thrill to have him back on home soil sharing his music with us all. You can catch him play at the following venues in the coming months.

Kim Churchill Comes Home for Summer Tour

After playing more in 300 shows around the world in 2012, you’d think Kim Churchill would be ready for a rest. But it seems the lure of a homegrown summer tour is too strong. Kim will return to Australia for a string of dates to support last year’s release of his sophomore album Details of Distance.

The album showcases an artist whose traditional bluesy, folky sound is maturing. There’s a grittier edge to the songs including the first single “Season’s Grind” and the newie, “Sarah.” Kim recorded the album in Vancouver, Canada, and he’s clearly excited to bring it to music lovers in his own country this summer.

“I’m excited to be in my country for the summer for once,” Kim said in a statement. “Also very excited to be touring with Steve Smyth. I find him melodically very inspiring and an incredible performer.”

Kim Churchill Launches “Detail of Distance” at Bluesfest

Could there be any better place for local guitarist and singer-songwriter Kim Churchill to launch his sophomore album Detail of Distance than Bluesfest. The album will hit stores on April 5, a day before Kim commences his three-day stint at the iconic Byron Bay festival.

Kim recorded Detail of Distance in Vancouver, Canada with the help of master producer Todd Simko (Xavier Rudd, Bif Naked). It showcases an artist mature beyond his 21 years who’s started to add some rock edge to his bluesy folk sound. You can definitely hear that new energy in “Season’s Grind,” the first single lifted from the album.

Happily for those of us scattered around the countryside it’s worth noting that the Bluesfest slots are far from your only chance to see Kim. He’ll play shows through to June, so he’s bound to pull in to a town near you.
