Kylie Turns 40

Happy birthday Kylie Minogue! The woman once dubbed The Singing Budgie has turned 40, and she’s hotter than ever.

I still remember when Kylie played Charlene on Neighbours. Was it really 20 years ago? I didn’t really appreciate her musical career at the time, but my sister was a mad fan. She had a big poster in her room of Kyles wearing some sort of hat which allowed her blond curls to spill out over the top. It was the 80s after all.

In time I’ve come to appreciate the cheesy brilliance of those early songs like “I Should Be So Lucky,” “Hand on Your Heart” and yes, even “The Locomotion.”

Since then she’s reinvented herself more times than Madonna, and like the Material Girl, Kylie still manages to top the charts all around the world. Except America, but the less said about that the better!

She’s preparing to celebrate her 40th birthday in Paris, surrounded by friends and family. Mum and Dad Minogue, little sister Danni and brother Brendan will be there alongside Michael Gudinski and other music industry colleagues.

I hope she has a wonderful time. Here’s to you Kylie!

Kylie Awarded Top French Honour

We love her, the Brits love her, and it seems the French love Kylie too. They awarded our pop princess its highest cultural honour, the Order of Arts and Letters, in a ceremony in Paris yesterday.

France’s cultural minister Christine Albanel told Kylie she was a “Midas of the international music scene who turns everything she touches into gold.”

But it wasn’t just Kylie’s catchy tunes hotpants that impressed France. Ms Albanel also applauded the work she’s done in increasing the profile of breast cancer.

“I want to publicly salute the courage you showed by revealing publicly that you had breast cancer. Doctors now even go as far as saying there is a ‘Kylie effect’ that encourages young women to have regular checks,” she added.

Kylie’s proud parents Ron and Carol Minogue made the trip to France to support their daughter.

Nat and Kylie’s Girly Getaway

Natalie Imbruglia and Kylie Minogue have both been unlucky in love recently, but don’t think the Aussie pop princesses will let it get them down. According to AZ Central, the pair recently flew to Mauritius for a girls-only getaway.

The former Neighbours costars stayed at the exclusive Shanti Ananda resort.

“Natalie is heartbroken after splitting from husband Daniel Johns and Kylie thought a sunshine break would cheer her up. They are both trying to put their relationship troubles behind them and think this holiday will do the job,” an unnamed source said.

We know how reliable those unnamed sources are, but if anything’s going to mend a broken heart it’s staying at the Shanti Ananda.

The privilege doesn’t come cheap, with villas costing around $4,700 a night. Relaxation is the order of the day, with the resort offering yoga lessons, meditation sessions, and massages. It sounds absolutely heavenly!

Kylie Wows at Brit Awards

Australia’s own Kylie Minogue was named Best International Female Solo Artist at last night’s Brit Awards. She received the trophy from her Doctor Who costar David Tennant.

“I’m all overcome. This is incredible,” she told the crowd as she accepted her award.

During the ceremony Kyles showed why she’s worthy of the honour with a spectacular performance of her new single “Wow.” Check it out below!

Kylie Honoured By The Queen

She may be Aussie born and bred, but Kylie Minogue has been named an Officer of the British Empire.

“I feel deeply touched to be acknowledged by the UK, my adopted home, in this way,” Kylie told Britain’s Sky News.

“I am almost as surprised as I am honoured to be awarded an OBE by Her Majesty The Queen.”

The Queen’s New Years Honours recognise an individual’s contributions to Britain.

Kylie received the title for her service to the entertainment community.

Kylie’s Got the "X" Factor

Kylie Minogue has burst back onto the albums charts this week with a number-one debut. Her tenth studio album X is sitting pretty at the top of the ARIA charts in a big week for Aussie artists.

Her single “2 Hearts” has slipped to number nine this week, just behind The Veronicas’ “Hook Me Up” at eight.

Kylie’s album outperformed another Aussie legend, Jimmy Barnes, who debuted at number three with Out of the Blue.

These massive albums have pushed Human Nature’s Motown tribute, Get Ready, to number five this week. They sit just ahead of Delta Goodrem’s Delta at number six.

Aussies have also claimed the last three spots in the top ten. Guy Sebastian’s The Memphis Album is at number eight, ahead of Keith Urban’s greatest hits record 18 Kids at nine, and the revamped Young Divas’ outfit at number 10 with New Attitude.

But the real surprise this week was the performance of Australian Idol Natalie Gauci’s debut single “Here I Am.” A number two debut isn’t a disaster by any means, but it’s the first time an Aussie Idol has failed to claim the top spot in its first week.

Here’s this week’s complete Aussie top 10.

Kylie Announces European Tour

It’s not quite the world tour that was rumoured a few months ago, but Kylie Minogue is hitting the road again. Our own pop diva will tour throughout Europe in 2008.

Kylie’s renowned for her spectacular stage shows, and her new concerts promoting her tenth album X promise to be no different.

“I am putting together a show that is going to be a new and exciting experience for both the audience and myself,” Kylie said in a press release.

“The eclectic mix of sounds on X is affording me an opportunity to explore and develop a new live show that will be fresh, exhilarating and innovative. After two celebratory tours, X will be a look to the future but will definitely include favourites alongside the new. I can’t wait to share it with you next year!”

It’s just a rumour at this point, but a gap in the touring schedule has left fans wondering whether Kylie will headline next year’s Glastonbury festival. She’ll play Belfast on June 27, but doesn’t have another show until her Glasgow gig on July 5. The Glastonbury festival is slated for the weekend of June 27-29.

Kylie was scheduled to play the massive festival in 2005, but had to pull out due to her cancer diagnosis. Festival organiser Michael Eavis has left no doubt that he’d love to see the pop princess perform.

“Kylie sums up everything Glastonbury is about,” he told The Daily Star. “She’s glam and theatrical. I see dancers, lights, feathers – almost like a circus show.

“She seduced me with her Showgirl tour and I’d love to see her do that on the last night.”

Kylie’s European tour kicks off in Paris on May 6, 2008. UK tickets go on sale from www.kylie.com on Monday.

Kylie Statue Unveiled

A statue of Australia’s pop princess Kylie Minogue will be unveiled in Melbourne today. It will join statues of John Farnham and Dame Nellie Melba as part of the Variety Entertainers of the Century art installation at Docklands.

The installation will feature 100 plaques commemorating the names of Australian artists, similar to the Hollywood Walk of Fame. It will also include a giant mosaic mural celebrating the stars, and the life-sized bronze statues.

The Kylie is the work of acclaimed Melbourne sculptor Peter Corlett. He’s the guy responsible for the Weary Dunlop statue on St Kilda Road, the Phar Lap sculpture in Flemington, and the Teddy Whitten piece in Footscray.

His Kylie piece took three months to complete and it is an exact replica of the Aussie diva, right down to the size of her waist. Peter liaised with Kylie’s management and dressmakers in London to get the body measurements, and then used a real-life Kylie clone for the finishing touches.

“I actually found a young woman working in a cafe in Brunswick St who had virtually the same measurements as Kylie,” he told the Herald Sun.

“I hope the final Kylie will become a popular place to visit for all her fans.”

Make Kylies at Facebook

Kylie Minogue is entering the digital age in a big way. Last week I told you about her cool social network site, Kylie Konnect. Now she’s launched a brilliant new Facebook application that allows fans to create their own little Kylie characters.

Facebook users can browse more than forty Classic Kylies wearing some of the divas most iconic outfits, or create their own from scratch. I think my favourite is this cute little Intimate Kylie, but there’s also the”Can’t Get You Out of My Head” Kylie wearing that famous white pantsuit, and the “Spinning Around” Kylie complete with sexy gold hotpants.

Once you’ve created your mini-Kylie you can download it to your computer or send it to a friend. Check it out at http://apps.facebook.com/kylierobotics/home.

The Spice Girls and The Eagles kept him away from the top spot, but Guy Sebastian’s Memphis Album made an impressive debut at number three this week. The original Aussie Idol is just ahead of Delta Goodrem’s Delta, which has slipped one spot to number four.

The new Veronicas’ album Hook Me Up fell from number to two to number seven, and David Campbell’s Swing Sessions 2 is sitting at number 10.
