“Call to Unknowns” – Little Quirks

Little Quirks have been releasing songs from their new EP Call to Unknowns since 2020. The pandemic had a way of slowing things down. But you know what they say about good things coming to those who wait. It’s been a long time coming, but Call to Unknowns is so very good.

The epic folk number “The Rain” opens the EP, showcasing the kind of theatre this Darkinjung Country/Central Coast band are capable of. This family band has matured so much since they began releasing music together in 2015, and this song celebrates their evolution. However, with stripped-back tracks like the new single “All My Friends are Birds” and the enchanting closing number “Underwater,” they show us that they haven’t strayed too far from their roots.

Whether they’re making a big noise or showing us the power of quiet moments, the beautiful harmony of their voices anchors Little Quirks’ music. It’s a beautiful sound that quite simply brings joy. I’ve loved hearing the singles, but the release of Call to Unknowns lets us soak up the magic of Little Quirks for a little longer. It’s out now. Fresh from an international tour, Little Quirks will play shows around the country, and some sneaky UK dates, in the coming months. Catch them anywhere you can:

Fall in Love With Little Quirks’ “Someone to Hold”

Central Coast trio Little Quirks continue their winning streak with their gorgeous new single “Someone to Hold.” It sucks you in with its intimate sound early, ensuring you’re firmly on board once those sublime harmonies kick in. These women are the real deal.

Lead vocalist Jaymi Toole explained the song “was loosely written as a love story between a lonely person and their shadow. The idea slowly merged with the concept of self-acceptance and being comfortable enough within yourself to embrace who you really are as opposed to what people perceive you as. This song is also a little different to our usual sound. We’ve gone for a 50’s inspired style for this track to capture a sense of nostalgia, like an old-fashioned love story. However, in the end, sometimes all we need is a connection with ourselves.”

“Someone to Hold” gives us a taste of what’s in store from Little Quirks’ fourth EP. If it all sounds this good, we’re in for a real treat.

Little Quirks Release Beautiful New Single “Florence’s Town” Ahead of NSW Shows

Central Coast family band Little Quirks have made my heart soar with their latest single “Florence’s Town.” It’s an epic folk-pop number which reminds me a little of something Mumford & Sons or The Lumineers might have made. However, the feminine touch of sisters Abbey and Mia and their cousin Jaymi helps set this track apart.

“Florence’s Town is a story of people searching to find a magical, fictional place called Florence’s Town. The characters within this story are trying to prove their worth and earn their way into the love and freedom this place holds. In a world where unfortunately everything and everyone can be judged, I wanted it to be an anthem of empowerment for everyone feeling like they don’t fit into the social ‘norm’,” Abbey explained.

“I started the idea of Florence’s Town on a train somewhere after hearing the name of another passenger was Florence, which I really loved. I sang a melody quietly into my phone hoping nobody on the train would hear. After I got home I wrote the whole story of these characters, interspersed with my own experiences. I listened to all my secret train recordings and put the rest of it all together that night.”

The music video brings the narrative to life, with a nod to The Wizard of Oz. As gigs start to return, there are few opportunities to see Little Quirks doing their thing. Catch them at the following venues next month.

27 November 2020 – The Chippendale Hotel, Chippendale
28 November 2020 – Radio Waves: A Drive-In Concert @ Morisset Showground, Morisset

“Cover My Eyes” – Little Quirks

In a world where heavily produced music created by computers seems to dominate the charts, the back-to-basics tunes from the Central Coast’s Little Quirks are a revelation. There is no studio trickery here on their EP Cover My Eyes. It’s simple music, organically created, and that’s what makes it so special.

In five tracks the Little Quirks will make you fall in love with them. In fact, if you listened to the single and opening track “Life Wouldn’t Be” before, you’d know it takes just one. But what comes later isn’t just making up the numbers. Neither is it more of the same. The essential ingredients are there: those sublime familial harmonies, the strums of acoustic guitars and mandolin giving the music a country-folk flair. But the tracks help give us a complete picture of this exciting new band and their capabilities. “Cover My Eyes” really brings those harmonies to the fore, with a slightly more delicate touch than the single. There’s a cool bluesiness to “Where We Hide.” “Bury Our Bones” is eerily brooding, with a quiet intensity that draws listeners in. “Devil’s Ivy” is a real charmer, the kind of song you might imagine the sisters singing around a burning campfire. There’s an innocence about it which is so appealing.

Cover My Eyes is like a breath of fresh air, a reminder of the beauty of quality music stripped back to basics. It’s also a reminder that these Central Coast teens have massive futures ahead of them. The trio will celebrate the EP’s recent release with the following shows along the East Coast in the coming months.
