Amazing Marcia Ready to Release “Amazing” Album

Singers don’t get much more amazing than Marcia Hines, so it’s only fitting that the adjective is not just the name of her new album, but also the lead single.

Marcia’s looking so fabulous that you’ve got to stop to remind yourself that she’s 60. That age brings an awareness of who she is musically that so many youngsters just don’t have. She doesn’t reinvent the wheel here, but she doesn’t have to. She’s Marcia Hines.

There is something pretty revolutionary about Amazing though. It’s the first album of original songs Marcia’s recorded in 20 years. She wrote these songs, co-produced them, as well as laying down all those vocal tracks. Reading what she’s saying about it, her passion for this album really shines through.

“This album is very personal and I hope and pray that my fans love this songwriting side. I have never before exposed so much of my inner-self than in these songs. You will hear the full range of human emotion, and all of it comes from my heart,” Marcia said in a press release. “The opening track ‘Amazing’ is about creating the happily-ever-after moment. This is the soundtrack to finding that fairytale love. You are the silver lining to my life and you are amazing.”

The album Amazing hits stores everywhere on April 4.

Marcia Hines Does Carole King for 40th Anniversary

Marcia Hines is taking on the music of Carole King with her latest album, not so originally titled Marcia Sings Tapestry.

“Carole King’s Tapestry is an album that has been very integral in my life,” explained Marcia in a statement. “I love singing and these songs allow me to sing.”

SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA - JULY 14: Australian singer Marcia Hines performs at the 70's Disco International party held at the Equilibrium Hotel on July 14, 2007 in Sydney, Australia. The event is the first in a series of 24 parties held in over 24 cities over a 6-month period, re-living the music, colours and fashion of the 70's era. (Photo by Sergio Dionisio/Getty Images)

Like Marcia, and a great many other girls out there, I also hold Tapestry really close to my heart. I only hope she can do those beautiful songs justice. I’m nervous, as I don’t think I’ve ever heard anyone cover those songs just right, but I’ll withhold my judgement until I take a listen.

The release of the album coincides with the 40th anniversary of Marcia’s foray into show business. Goodness isn’t she looking good for it! To celebrate it all, Marcia will perform two intimate shows: one at Melbourne’s Regent Theatre on November 20 and the other at Sydney’s State Theatre on December 4. The first half of the concerts will be dedicated to four decades of Marcia Hines hits, while the second will bring the songs of Tapestry to the stage.

“It’s going to be two very different moods and that’s a beautiful thing,” Marcia said. “I love them both.”

I could say that ending a show on the songs of someone else probably isn’t the best way to celebrate your own career, but I love Marcia too much to be catty about it. Tickets for both shows go on sale on September 15, and the album will hit stores on October 1.

Lionel Richie, Marcia Hines, and Mahalia Barnes @ Bimbadgen Estate, Hunter Valley – 8 December 2007

Attending a concert the day before moving house may be insane to some, but that’s exactly what I did last Saturday. I left the chaotic mess of boxes in my apartment for a little music therapy at one of the Hunter Valley’s famous Day on the Green events. This time around I was treated to the musical stylings of Mahalia Barnes, Marcia Hines, and Lionel Richie.

Jimmy Barnes’ little girl Mahalia proved she’s all grown up with a killer set of original soul tunes and some classic covers. She’s got an amazing set of pipes, and injects such passion into her performance that it matters little whether you know the songs or not. Her closer of “Proud Mary” was every inch as good as Tina Turner’s.

Next up was Australian Idol judge and soul diva Marcia Hines. Miss Marcia’s been doing this for around thirty years, and it shows. She had us dancing in the aisles with disco standards like “Shake Your Groove Thing,” “Disco Inferno,” and her own smash hit “You.” We were also treated to some more reflective moments from her new album Life, including brilliant takes on “Everybody Hurts,” “No Ordinary Love” and “Get Here.”

While Marcia and Mahalia wowed us, it was clear that there was just one person the crowd was there to see. That man was Lionel Richie. He’s not the most handsome man in the world, but there’s something about him that had the females from 15 to 50 on their feet.

Marcia Hines’ New Lease on Life

After four decades in the music business, Australian Idol judge Marcia Hines is showing no signs of slowing down.

During her time in the spotlight, Marcia’s learnt a thing or two. She brings together a collection of songs that have taught her a thing or two in her new album, Life. In the album’s CD slick, she shares stories and advice relating to her song choices.

“You know how there are songs in your life that when you’re sad and you’re boo hoo that you put it on, or you have songs that are really uplifting? Well these songs have meant a lot to me in my life so I just thought if they work for me they might work for everybody else,” she told The Sydney Morning Herald.

The songs include cover versions of John Lennon’s “Imagine,” Toni Braxton’s “Breathe Again” and, her latest single, a version of REM’s “Everybody Hurts.”

Fans can expect to hear these covers when Marcia supports Lionel Richie on his Australian tour next month. Life is in stores on Saturday.

Prank Angers Idol’s Nice Judge

She’s known as Australian Idol’s “nice judge,” but Marcia Hines wasn’t smiling when she was on the end of a Channel Nine prank.

Marcia and her daughter Deni were lunching at the Rangoon Racquet Club in Crows Nest when the stunt, part of the new hidden camera show Surprise Surprise Gotcha, unfolded.

“Basically she was in a foul mood and had no sense of humour about the situation,” a program source told The Daily Telegraph. “She just didn’t want to react to what was happening at all.”

Apparently Marcia stormed out of the restaurant when she realised she’d been a victim of the show’s prank.

“She didn’t like being set-up and I don’t think she liked the fact that she didn’t have her hair and make-up done either,” the source added.

Marcia’s camp has asked the network not to air the offending footage, so we may never see what caused this typically patient judge to lose her cool.

Musicial Icons Inducted Into ARIA Hall of Fame

The ARIA Hall of Fame just got a little more crowded, with six acts awarded the honour last night in Melbourne. Australian musical masters joined some of the hottest new talent to celebrate the new inductees.

Sneaky Sound System‘s Connie Mitchell duetted with disco diva and Australian Idol judge Marcia Hines, before Harry M Miller inducted her into the Hall of Fame. The legendary stage producer watched over a young Marcia when she starred in Hair.

Western Australian roots outfit The Waifs performed “I Remember You” in tribute to inductee Frank Ifield.

Jimmy Barnes then took the stage to introduce fellow musical icon and new Hall of Famer, Brian Cadd. Barnesy compared Brian’s songwriting skills to American masters Ray Charles and Hank Williams. As if to prove a point, Brian performed two of his biggest hits: “Ginger Man” with The Audreys, and “Little Ray of Sunshine” with Thirsty Merc’s Rai Thistlethwayte.

Other inductees included punk pioneers Radio Birdman, the Hoodoo Gurus, and Jo Jo Zep and the Falcons. Music manager John Woodruff, best remembered for his work with Savage Garden, was given a lifetime achievement award.

Stay tuned for a final Hall of Fame inductee to be revealed ahead of October’s ARIA Awards ceremony.
