Jakarta-born, Melbourne-based singer-songwriter Kevin Riady wears his heart on his sleeve with his new single, “Marco.” It’s a tender folk-pop song about self-discovery and unrequited love.
Kevin was inspired to write the song after falling in love with a friend, a fellow foreign exchange student he met in Lyon, France. While the song was inspired by a specific relationship, the experience it explores is one Kevin has experienced many times as he struggled with his sexuality.
“I think this song is important to me because these experiences of having straight/curious/closeted friends always put a toll on me and (‘Marco’) is just my way of externalising both conscious and unconsciously,” he explained.
The music video moves the romance from the streets of France to Kevin’s adopted hometown of Melbourne. The self-directed and produced clip beautifully captures the agony and ecstasy of a relationship that almost was. It drops this time next week, so make sure you give his Facebook page a follow to see it. I’ve had a sneak peek, and I know you’re going to love it.
Listen out for more from Kevin Riady. He plans to release his debut EP and play his first full band show later this year.
