Mathilde Anne Teams Up With Des Cortez Frontman For “Break”

Mathilde Anne has a knack for creating indie pop music with real depth. Her latest effort is “Break,” a super catchy number with some of the most vulnerable lyrics you’re likely to hear and special guest vocals from Des Cortez’ Sam Knight.

“I wrote ‘Break’ in my shower at 12am after a Finneas concert. I was sitting in the shower listening to my “depressing hot girl heart-break” playlist and thinking about a conversation I’d had with my partner,” Mathilde recalls. “In that conversation we came to the conclusion that both of us (me in particular) had a lot of walls up and had kept myself somewhat reserved for fear of having my heart broken again. I wrote it as a way to come to terms with this idea I had during my sad-girl shower that I didn’t want him to not really know me or the way I love”.

Mathilde Anne has had a massive year releasing a stack of new material, scoring a Music Victoria Award nomination, and sharing stages with Cub Sport and Telenova. She’s hitting the ground running in 2024 with a couple of shows in the first week of January. Add these to your calendar, and save room for the other dates that will inevitably follow:

13 January 2024 – Coastal Jam Festival @ Rosebud Village Green, Boonwarrung/Mornington Peninsula
19 January 2024 – The Toff, Naarm/Melbourne (co-headline with Des Cortez)

Mathilde Anne Releases Fantastic New Single, “To Be Honest”

I am loving the angsty tracks that Naarm/Melbourne-based talent Mathilde Anne has been dropping, and her latest offering, “To Be Honest,” is no exception. It’s a ballad this time, but that anger is just simmering underneath the surface.

“We can all find a little comfort in letting people know they’ve hurt you and telling those we actually loved through hell, to finally fuck off,” Mathilde Anne enthused. Too right!

“‘To Be Honest’ was one of my favourite songs to record,” added her producer, James Seymour, known for his work with Merpire and Elizabeth M. Drummond. “It came together instantly. James and I really wanted to create something soft but gritty at the same time”, says Mathilde. “We created multiple juxtaposing guitar patterns to express the emotion in the track and this ended up starting a bit of a theme throughout the whole album”.

This is the latest release from Mathilde Anne’s forthcoming debut album Normal, which is slated for release next year. Until then, you can see Mathilde Anne doing her thing live at the following shows:

29 September 2023 – The Evelyn Hotel, Naarm/Fitzroy (with Lucy Lorrenne)
1 October 2023 – The Workers Club, Naarm/Fitzroy (with Sarah Yagki)
11 November 2023 – The Evelyn Hotel, Naarm/Fitzroy (with Pixel Junkies)

Mathilde Anne Makes a Splash With “Crime Scene Cadillac”

Naarm/Melbourne punktress Mathilde Anne has just dropped her fantastic new single “Crime Scene Cadillac.” It’s got the cool brooding quality of a Lorde track combined with the energy and angst of the Arctic Monkeys. It’s a strange meeting of influences, but it really works!

“’Crime Scene Cadillac’ essentially focuses on the idea of loving what isn’t good for you despite knowing that it may very well kill you. Whether it’s a person/an action or a substance… you just can’t get enough of it,” Mathilde Anne explained. “This song voices my own personal experiences with addiction and poor relationships and that feeling of living the pain. Much like buying an extra-large packet of Cheetos and eating it while watching Buffy the Vampire Slayer, you know that it isn’t going to end well, but you just can’t stop!”

“Crime Scene Cadillac” is already a fan favourite at Mathilde Anne’s live shows, so you can bet she’ll raise the roof at the single launch this Friday, May 26, at Naarm/Melbourne venue LongPlay.

Mathilde Anne Asserts Herself With “I’ve Had Enough”

Emerging Melbourne artist Mathilde Anne is hitting back against toxic relationships in her new single “I’ve Had Enough.” It sounds sweet, but there’s a tough centre under that sugary exterior.

“When you’re young and grow up in environments where you’re not shown healthy ways to behave in a relationship, it tends to warp your perception of what it means to be loved or be in love,” Mathilde admitted. “‘I’ve Had Enough’ stemmed from the realisation that I wasn’t doing what was best for me, because I wanted to feel ‘loved’ or ‘worthy’.”

Mathilde is inspired by an eclectic collection of artists including Lorde, Arctic Monkeys, Amy Winehouse, and Otis Redding, so I can’t wait to hear what she releases next. She’s planning to launch “I’ve Had Enough” with a few full-band shows around the country, so keep an eye on her Facebook page for the dates when they’re announced. She’ll also play the Gig Around the Green Mount Eliza Music Festival at the Canadian Bay Hotel on April 1.
