Melbourne Zoo Unveils Twilight Series Line-Up

Melbourne Zoo isn’t generally the place you think of visiting when you want to hear some great tunes, but this summer it’s playing host to some of the best Aussie and international acts you’ll find. Fourteen incredible shows will run over six weeks for the Melbourne Zoo Twilights 2014 season.

Tickets to all shows include full access to the zoo, so make sure you get there early to meet its residents. There’ll be plenty to see, as the zoo will welcome a baby elephant any day now, and it’s getting a new lemur exhibition in December.

All Twilight shows are fully licensed and there are plenty of food outlets serving up everything from takeaway pizzas to gourmet sit-down dinners. Just remember that there’s no BYO alcohol or glass permitted.

All proceeds from the shows will go towards the zoo’s conservation programs, including its They’re Calling You campaign. This unique idea encourages people to recycle their mobile phones to save wild gorillas. It seems like a strange link, but phone recycling helps reduce the demand for coltan mining which destroys gorilla habitats.

Tickets are on sale now from the Melbourne Zoo website for the following shows.

24 January 2014 – Perfect Tripod Australian Songs (with Dan Kelly)
25 January 2014 – BABBA (ABBA Tribute Band)
31 January 2014 – Songs That Made Me (Katie Noonan, Angie Hart, Abby Dobson and Martha Marlow)

Melbourne Zoo Celebrates Earth Hour with Aussie Acoustic Show

Earth Hour Unplugged is back for another year at Melbourne Zoo. Instead of sitting home in the dark, why not head out to this year’s eco-friendly acoustic concert featuring Tim Rogers and local acts Wagons and Blackchords?

While food and beverages will be on sale on site you’re free to BYO, so load up your picnic basket with gourmet treats and a few bottles of bubbles and prepare to soak up the good vibes. It all happens on March 27, with lights out from 8:30 to 9:30 pm.

Tickets are on sale now through Melbourne Zoo’s website and 1300 ZOOS VIC. Limited tickets will be available at the gate, but I recommend getting them early to avoid missing out. Gates open at 5:30 pm, which will give you a little time to meet the animals before the show starts at 6:30 pm.

Win Tickets to Melbourne Zoo Earth Hour Acoustic Concert

What are you planning to do this Earth Hour? If board games by candlelight don’t excite you, consider getting down to Melbourne Zoo on March 28. The place will be jumping with entertainment from local blues legend C.W. Stoneking & The Primitive Horn Orchestra, American blues darling Mamie Minch, and Melbourne swamp rockers Dirt River Radio.

In keeping with the eco-friendly ethos this will be an acoustic show with lights out from 8:30 to 9:30. To make it an extra green event, a portion of the proceeds will help to neutralise the concert’s carbon emissions.

This is a BYO concert, so make sure you bring along some cheese and biscuits and bubbles to celebrate! Gates open at 5:30 pm, giving you a little time to see the zoo’s furry residents before the show starts at 7.

I have three double passes to give away to Oz Music Scene readers. To win, just tell me your favourite eco-friendly tip! Make sure you leave your e-mail address with your comment so I can be in touch if you’re a lucky winner. You’ll also need to make sure you can get to Melbourne Zoo on March 28, as travel is the winner’s responsibility. The first three valid entries will each win a double pass. Good luck!

Resin Dogs Close Roar Sounds at Melbourne Zoo

Melbourne Zoo’s Roar Sounds 2009 concert series is going out with a bang this Thursday.

Queensland urban outfit Resin Dogs will headline with special guest MC N’fa from 1200 Techniques. The hip-hop act will be supported by hometown hero Phrase and Alexx The Kidd.

This week’s show is kicking off a little earlier than the previous weeks. Alexx The Kidd will take the stage from 6:30 pm, but you can visit the animals until 7. Gates open at 5:30 pm.

The BYO policy means you can bring along a few beers and nibblies and save cash, or you can grab refreshments at the zoo. Just remember to pack plastic cups because glass ones aren’t permitted.

Tickets are on sale from Melbourne Zoo in person, by calling 1300 ZOOSVIC, or visiting zoos.org.au.
