Missy Admits She’s "Not So Straight"

Speculation about Missy Higgins’ sexuality has been rife since the Aussie songstress sang about a woman who “smelled like sugar and spoke like the sea” in “Scar.” Well Missy’s put an end to the whispering by appearing on the cover of popular lesbian and queer women’s mag Cherrie.

“I think sexuality is a fluid thing and it’s becoming increasingly more acceptable to admit that you’re that way,” Missy said in an interview with Cherrie’s editor, Katrina Fox.

“I’d like to say if you’re comfortable with who you are inside it doesn’t matter what anyone else thinks,” she added.

“I don’t think it’s necessary to have to define yourself by any label. If you’re comfortable with who you are and you know who you are on the inside, people will love you for it.”

“We were very pleased at Cherrie magazine that Missy felt comfortable in being our cover girl and for admitting that she comes under our broad moniker of not-so-straight girls,” Katrina Fox told The Sunday Telegraph.

Good on Missy for being so comfortable in her own skin!

Missy Does Borders

Aussie singer-songwriter Missy Higgins is doing huge things in America at the moment. All her U.S. shows have sold out, but American fans can still catch Missy at her free instore appearances at Borders stores around the country.

Missy kicked off her Borders tour last night in New York. She’ll be in Chicago on Monday, before visiting Seattle, Northglenn, San Francisco, Los Angeles, and Hollywood. All the dates and times for these very special performances are available on Missy’s site.

These instores are a great chance to see one of Australia’s great modern songwriters before she makes it big in the States.

Borders is the only place that American fans can get their hands on Missy’s second album, On a Clear Night. The triple-platinum will be officially released through all American record stores next year.

Missy Lured by Los Angeles

Missy Higgins is packing up her piano and heading for the bright lights of L.A.

While in Los Angeles, Missy plans to play a number of industry showcases and attend meetings designed to get her music used in U.S. movies and television programs.

All this networking will no doubt come in handy when her second album, On a Clear Night, is released in America next year.

This news should be well received by those who find Missy a little whiny and annoying (that is, most Australian men).

“It’s good for the public, it’s good for me, it’s good for everyone for me to get out of here!” she told The Melbourne Sun.

“There’s nothing worse than people going, ‘Not her again!'”

However, the Melbourne songbird wants to assure her loyal Aussie fans she’ll be back by the end of the year for a national tour. If you can’t wait that long, be sure to catch Missy on Live at the Chapel on September 9.

Big Names Play Small Towns

Here’s one for the kids in the bush. Indie radio network Triple J will rock the Outback with a series of free outdoor concerts.

Chart toppers Missy Higgins and Something for Kate will perform alongside blues band Blue King Brown at the tour’s first show in Humpty Doo. Around 5,000 people call the Northern Territory community home.

Powderfinger, The Cat Empire and Grinspoon will then star in concerts in Karratha, Burnie and Innisfail.

Local artists will play alongside the headliners at these very special events.

The Triple J Goes AWOL concert series aims to bring some of Australia’s hottest artists to some of its most remote regions.

“We are bringing live music to places that don’t get a whole lot of live music,” said a Triple J spokesperson.

The Triple J Goes AWOL series kicks off on July 21. See the Triple J website for more details.
