“Demons” – Nathan Cavaleri

It’s been nearly 26 years since local guitar whizz Nathan Cavaleri released an album. Back then he was just 12 years old, a cute kid known for his cancer battle, appearances on Hey Hey It’s Saturday, and of course that talent beyond his years. His whirlwind childhood took a toll and Nathan stepped back from the spotlight to regroup and reassess. Thankfully, after some soul searching, he’s ready to share music with us again. The result is Demons, an album that represents Nathan’s journey and the adult performer he is today.

With the album’s first single, the title track “Demons,” and his latest release, “Before You Check Out,” Nathan shows he’s unafraid of tackling the tough issues. Both songs are introspective explorations of mental illness. Sensitively handled, there’s an optimism about both numbers that balances their dark themes.

The same could be said for the whole album really. While those songs have a suitably sombre tone, they’re balanced with more upbeat tracks like the funky, psychedelic inspired “Castles in the Sky” and flirty “Crush.” A swampy cover of Cold Chisel’s classic, “Rising Sun,” is so much fun. “Drifter” is another standout. Nathan’s voice is solid throughout this album, but this instrumental number lets us focus on his sublime guitar playing. This is where he really shines. The album closes with “Chucky,” a largely instrumental classic blues number that feels so fitting. While it has some vocals, reminding us that Nathan is much more than a guitar prodigy, it’s his skills with his axe that leave the lasting impression.

With Demons, Nathan Cavaleri shows himself to be a master musician, skilled at his craft and unafraid to take risks and innovate. The album roots itself in blues traditions, but Nathan isn’t afraid to take these classic sounds in new directions. A generation of Australians fell in love with Nathan Cavaleri, the child star. Now with the release of Demons, they get the chance to fall in love with Nathan Cavaleri, the man.

Nathan can’t wait to play these songs live, so he’s working with the following venues to play shows in line with each state and territory’s COVID-19 regulations. Hopefully all these shows will go ahead with safe social distancing and other COVID-19 safety procedures in place.

Nathan Cavaleri Covers Cold Chisel

Nathan Cavaleri has put his bluesy stamp on the music of Cold Chisel with his new reimagining of “Rising Sun.” Featuring Diesel on backing vocals, the cover is Nathan’s nod to Jimmy Barnes, the man who helped him land his first record deal at just 10 years old.

“When attempting to renovate a classic, Cold Chisel is like Led Zeppelin – approach with caution, but I guess my creative intuition wanted the challenge,” Nathan explained. “The words of their most bluesy song spontaneously found its way on top of a saucy half-time riff that I’d been jamming with for months. It’s a banger in a recliner seat and one of the crowd favourites live!”

“Rising Sun” is the latest track lifted from Nathan’s forthcoming EP, Demons. Expect tour and festival announcements from Nathan in the New Year to celebrate its release.

Nathan Cavaleri @ The Rhythm Hut, Gosford – 4 November 2018

When Lizotte’s closed the doors of the “cubbyhouse” in Kincumber around three and a half years ago, I worried the Central Coast might start missing out on shows. I don’t mind driving up and down the Pacific Highway if I need to, but there’s something so lovely about seeing gigs close to home. Rather than missing out though, other venues have stepped up to fill the void. Laycock Street Theatre is securing more musicians, and Wyong’s built The Art House. These venues are wonderful, but they don’t quite have that welcoming, comforting quality a night out at Lizotte’s had. So last night I was thrilled to discover a venue that does: The Rhythm Hut.

I’ve been intending to visit this Gosford arts space for some time, but the stars never quite aligned. When I was offered a pair of tickets for the Nathan Cavaleri show last night, I couldn’t refuse. The Rhythm Hut isn’t like most music venues. You feel like you’re heading towards someone’s house for a backyard barbeque rather than performance space as you walk down the steps to its outdoor patio area bordered by succulents. Inside there are mismatched couches at the back and along the sides and pillows and beanbags around the front near the stage. One half of the bar is for drinks, like the local Six Strings beers and decent wine served in real glasses, while the other serves hearty dishes and desserts. Last night it was vegetarian or chicken paella and brownies, but I hear the menu changes depending on what the volunteers make.

That’s right: volunteers. The Rhythm Hut is a non-profit performance space. When it’s not hosting local and international musicians, there are open mic nights and drumming workshops. Everyone seems to know everyone, and even if you’re a newcomer you’ll feel you’re going home part of the community. The hosts encourage the audience to make new friends between acts. So it seemed totally natural that I got chatting to the gentleman next to me and his adorable long-haired chihuahua. He wasn’t even the only dog enjoying the music.

This unique space really was the perfect venue for this show. Support act Dylan Wright might have gotten swallowed up in a larger venue, but here you could have heard a pin drop as he delivered his spine-tingling folky tunes. His original songs were outstanding, but I couldn’t help smiling at his slowed-down take on Rick James’ “Super Freak.” I was excited to see Nathan, but I must admit I was a little disappointed when his set ended. I snapped up his EP so I can listen more. I’m an instant fan.

Nathan Cavaleri has been out of the spotlight in recent years, but when I was growing up he was a household name, the cute kid who had leukemia and a natural gift for the guitar. It’s a gift that has taken him all over the world and seen him share bills with BB King, Elton John, Robert Plant, and Jimmy Page, to name but a few. As you can imagine, now all grown-up Nathan has some stories to tell. While there were the superstar anecdotes, he wasn’t afraid to reveal more personal tales of his battles with anxiety, depression, and self-doubt.

The stories helped punctuate a set that was truly something special. With good mate Kenny by his side, Nathan left no doubt that the guitar skills he showcased as a kid on numerous TV shows haven’t gone anywhere. In fact, he might play even better now, combining his natural flair with a dirtier blues sensibility. Originals sat comfortable among tributes to his influences, including Ben Harper, Fleetwood Mac, and of course, the great BB King. They were played with such joy and the whole crowd responded, whether they were nodding their heads from their seats or dancing with wild abandon around the sides of the venue.

Last night Nathan Cavaleri put on one of those performances that just feels good for the soul. I can’t imagine a better venue for this show or to wrap up his “Demons” tour. It felt like a house party, one of those nights where someone has a guitar and starts to jam spontaneously. Except as we all know, Nathan is much handier with an axe than your average party guest.

Nathan Cavaleri Lays “Demons” Bare

Nathan Cavaleri had a rapid rise to fame. I remember him as a little tacker playing with Tommy Emmanuel and regularly appearing on Hey Hey It’s Saturday. By the age of 12 he was in the center of a bidding war between the labels of Michael Jackson, Madonna, and Prince. By the age of 16 he’d already toured with B.B. King, played for the Clintons at the Kenny Centre. He rubbed shoulders with Jimmy Page and Mark Knopfler.

His battle with leukaemia at the tender age of seven was well documented. You might assume after beating cancer and gaining global attention for your music, life would be all smooth sailing. But in 2010, his battles with insomnia and anxiety were brought to the fore when he blacked out on a festival stage. The experience shattered his confidence, and he stepped away from his music, expecting he’d never return.

But he did.

“To move through those four years of paralysing anxiety/depression I had to ask myself the question, ‘Why’?” Nathan explained. “Out of self-preservation, I had to find reasons to fight and be ruthless in discarding any reason that wasn’t rock solid.”

In the process he rediscovered the same cathartic connection with music he had all those years ago when facing down cancer. During that time he wrote his new single “Demons,” and the EP of the same name.

It’s a fascinating story, and one that helps you understand the song, but “Demons” is the kind of track that stands up without it. I listened to it before I read the press release and knew where it came from, and was so impressed by the way Nathan’s sound has developed over the years. It’s an incredible track.

Nathan Cavaleri & Screaming Jets Drummer are Nat Col & The Kings

Nathan Cavaleri is all grown up and fronting a brand new band Nat Col & The Kings. The guitar prodigy’s latest outfit is introducing us to their sound with a wicked new single “Coming Home” and a national tour to support its release.

We haven’t heard a lot from Nathan in recent years. He actually gave up the guitar for a while and worked as a brickie’s labourer until Steve Morse gave him a call in 2010 and encouraged him to join Deep Purple on their Aussie tour. No one’s going to say no to that sort of invitation! The tour reignited Nathan’s love of music, and after a chance meeting with former Screaming Jets drummer Col Hatchman the brand new outfit was formed.

Nat Col & The Kings marks the start of a new chapter of both artists’ journeys. So far the band has played slots at Byron Bay’s Bluesfest, the Indy V8 Supercars, and the Caxton Street Music Festival. They released a couple of EPs, and have another in the pipeline. The new single “Coming Home” is our first taste of this forthcoming release.
