Fans Help Eskimo Joe Make New Album

Eskimo Joe have enjoyed the support of major labels in recent years, but they’ve decided to do things a little differently for album number six. Rather than working with a record company, the Perth band decided to let fans fund the new record through Pozible.

Fans have been quick to embrace the initiative, pledging $54, 600 at last count, far exceeding the $40, 000 Eskimo Joe hoped to raise. With the fundraising drive running until February, they might even end up doubling their target.

Contributors will have the warm fuzzy feeling that comes with helping to support local talent, as well as a few extra perks. Depending on how much they give, people who pledge can earn bonuses like advance copies of the new single and even a barbeque with the band members.

If you’re feeling skint you can still join in on the fun. Eskimo Joe will engage with their fans through social media during the writing and recording process.

“We feel that involving all our supporters like this brings a real responsibility to us to make a fucking awesome record and to also make them feel a real part of it,” the band said in an official statement. “This feels like a new creative beginning for us.”

I must admit to feeling Eskimo Joe’s album was a little lacklustre. I really hope this new direction brings them the inspiration they need to create another Aussie classic!

John Farnham Back With New Live Tour and Album

The legendary John Farnham is heading out on the road for shows all around the country this October and November. The dates include a handful of Day on the Green winery shows, and a special show at Luna Park celebrating the amusement park’s 75th birthday.

“I love doing outdoor shows and the vineyards around Australia are beautiful venues to perform at,” John said on the announcement of these shows, adding that “the opportunity to perform at an iconic venue such as Luna Park was something I just couldn’t say no to. Performing in an intimate venue will be fantastic.”

We can expect to hear plenty of old favourites, and a couple of new songs. These tracks will feature on John’s new album which should be in stores this October. That should give fans just enough time to learn the words!

John will be joined on the tour by some top-notch supports including Katie Noonan, Richard Clapton, and Ross Wilson.

Tickets go on sale from the usual outlets from July 30.

New Silverchair Album In the Works

Silverchair are teasing their fans with news that a new album is on the way … but not any time soon.

The Aussie three-piece recently spent three weeks in a remote New South Wales studio working on the follow-up to 2007’s monster record, Young Modern.

“They put down a bunch of ideas & Daniel has since gone away to write and develop the songs further,” reads a statement on the band’s website.

There are no release plans yet for the album, which is in the early stages of construction. The band know that’s a little disheartening for fans, so they’ve added a video to their website which offers some insight into their recent recording sessions.

Sarah Blasko Records in Sweden

Sarah Blasko has travelled to Sweden to record her third album.

The new tracks were penned at home in Sydney before she set off for a European tour. While in Europe Sarah decided to work with pop mastermind Bjorn Yttling. She’d noticed his name on the back of some of her favourite albums, including discs by Lykke Li and Camera Obscura, so she figured she’d pop the question.

“I sent him a letter and some music and within about a week he got back to me and said he was interested, so I went and visited him in Stockholm and we hit it off,” Sarah said in a statement.

“He showed me the great studios we could record in, he had some great ideas and a lot of enthusiasm and I just felt we could make a good record together. The snowy conditions also won me over.”

It has to make a nice change from Australia’s heatwaves!

Sarah should be in the studio for the next six weeks, but she’ll keep us updated on her progress through her blog.

New Natalie Imbruglia Album Almost Ready

It sounds like that new Natalie Imbruglia album is well on its way.

“We have reached the really exciting stage of choosing singles, putting a great team together to create the artwork, photos and videos, and are thinking of exciting ways to get the music out there,” she wrote recently on her website.

With some amazing collaborations, this is going to be one album to look out for. Nat’s worked with some massive names, including Dave A. Stewart (Eurythmics), producer Ben Hillier (The Doves, Blur, Elbow), Gary Clark, songwriter Jamie Hartman (Emma Bunton, Will Young), and ex-husband Daniel Johns.

AC/DC Album, and a Tour?

There hasn’t been a lot of news since AC/DC announced last year a new album was in the works. I’m happy to say though the Aussie rock veterans are well on their way to releasing this highly anticipated new work.

Singer Brian Johnson says the new album, their first in eight years, should be released later this year. And a tour isn’t out of the question either.

“We’re working with Brendan O’Brien, [Bruce] Springsteen’s producer, and he’s a great guy,” Brian told Channel [V]. “He knows exactly what we want, and so far, it sounds really good. I’m well pleased.

“Mal and Ang are still just electric on their guitars, and Phil’s got the old magic on the drums and Cliff Williams is Mr. Reliable on bass – he’s brilliant – and it’s just been fun. It’s like a bunch of old friends getting together again and having a great time.”

When asked about their touring plans, Brian had this to say.

“I would probably think so, yeah. I always hate to say yes in case something happens, but I really do think we will be out there, everybody’s enjoying being back together again and the buzz is still there and the excitement.”

All sounds very promising for you hard rock fans out there!

New Guy Sebastian Album in the Works

Guy Sebastian’s Memphis Album was such a success, he’s decided to head back to the States to prepare for a follow-up. But don’t expect another album of soul covers. While it’d undoubtedly sell well, Guy’s busy collaborating with the likes of David Ryan Harris on some original songs. A star in his own right, Aussie music lovers might recognise David as part of John Mayer’s current band.

Stax legend Steve Cropper must have enjoyed Guy’s company last time around, because he’s also working on this new release.

“We are meant to be writing but we are mainly just jamming and hanging out,” Guy said on his website.

Great things come out of jam sessions, so who knows what this meeting of creative minds will produce.

Guy fans won’t hear this new release for a while, so thankfully there’s a DVD in the works to tide fans over. Sony BMG plan to release a live DVD featuring one of Guy’s Memphis Album performances at Melbourne’s Crown Casino. It will be in stores on May 3.
