Harlequins Deliver With “Old Man River”

The press release for “Old Man River” describes it as a “groovy country song.” However, this new song from Eora/Sydney band Harlequins is so much more than that. With elements of funk and jazz, it’s just a rollicking good time. So forget about the genre labels, leave your preconceptions at the door, and just give this one a listen.

Marcus Child and Chris Bradley have been friends for 31 years but this is only their second single. You hear that experience and bond shining through this music. It’s really good stuff. If you want to hear more, you can catch Harlequins playing a hometown show at LazyBones Lounge and Restaurant on October 12.

Old Man River is teaming up with Passenger and Sounds of Oz favourite Daniel Lee Kendall for one big summer tour.

This is one of those really exciting bills for folks who love the art of songwriting and story-telling through music. It’s also taking in some gorgeous venues in the capitals and regional centers.

If you’re a bit skint from Christmas keep your ear to the ground, as Old Man River and Passenger will also play some free street gigs along the way.

Tickets for these shows are on sale from the venues.

Daniel Johnston Acoustic Australian Live Set Gets Digital Release

Punters raved about Daniel Johnston’s shows this February. In between slots at the Laneway Festival and theatres, the American singer-songwriter took time out to record an acoustic session in Sydney’s Albert Studios. Now that live set will be released as an EP through Hub The Label and Albert productions.

The 2005 South By South West Music Festival

The EP features many tracks which have never been released live anywhere in the world. Standout local singer-songwriter Old Man River joins Daniel for “Fake Tales of Rock ‘n’ Roll,” just as he did at the Aussie shows.

The live@albertstudios EP will be available for digital download through iTunes on May 21.

Old Man River Announces Aussie EP Tour

It’s been more than two years in the making, but Old Man River is finally heading home for a headline tour to support the release of his new five-track EP You’re On My Mind.

The release will precede Old Man River’s new long player Trust, which should hit stores in the middle of years. I can’t wait to hear this recording which was inspired by Old Man River’s travels in Australia, the Middle East, and India.

Until then though we’ll be content with the album and the tour, for which tickets are on sale now. Old Man River will be joined on the following dates for Ernest Ellis and The Chemist.

7 May – TheTroubadour, Brisbane
8 May – The Vanguard, Sydney
9 May– The Vanguard, Sydney
13 May – Northcote Social Club, Melbourne
14 May – Jive, Adelaide

Old Man River Wows Japan

Thanks to the catchiest song ever “La,” Old Man River has become an overnight sensation in Japan. “La” was the most-played song on Japanese radio last week, an amazing achievement for a Western band.

Old Man River will head to Japan for a week long promo tour in mid February, before jetting to the US for the South by South West conference. Then it’s back to the Land of the Rising Sun in August for the Summersonic Festival, which will see them play to more than 200, 000 fans in three cities.

Old Man River will release their debut album Good Morning in Japan this week.

Old Man River’s a Ray of Sunshine

Old Man River will brighten up your summer with their new single “Sunshine.”

Funnily enough, they’ve opted to tour the chilly regions of Europe to celebrate its release. They’ll kick off their Italian dates at Milan’s La Casa 139 tomorrow night, before visiting Scandiano, Brescia, Rome, and Ancona. They’ll arrive in Germany on the 17th, and play Hamburg, Munich, Berlin and Koln.

But never fear Aussies. Old Man River will be back before the jetlag kicks in to play a string of shows, including Homebake, the Peats Ridge Festival, and The Falls.

You’d think they’d be tired of touring after all that, but Old Man River are just getting started. In early 2008 they’ll take their delicious blend of folk and pop to Japan, Canada, and the United States.

Italy In Love With Old Man River

Old Man River‘s infectious single “La” is the perfect antidote for the cold Australian winter. This catchy pop slice reminds me of warm sand between my toes and lazy summer weekends.

The irresistible ditty has become a surprise smash in Italy, racing up the national airplay charts. The song is sitting pretty at number 19 on the Italian national airplay chart, up 12 spots from two weeks ago.

Not a bad effort for a boy from Sydney. To see what all the fuss is about, be sure to watch Old Man River performing “La” on the ABC’s Sideshow below!

If you like what you see, catch Old Man River when he visits your town soon! Check his MySpace for all the tour dates.
