Paul Kelly Takes A to Z Abroad

After wowing Australian audiences with his A to Z shows, Paul Kelly’s preparing to do it all over again in the United Kingdom, United States and Canada.

Paul will play tunes from A to Z to support the international releases of The A to Z Recordings and his book How to Make Gravy. One hundred of his most beloved works will be performed acoustically in alphabetical order across four nights in the UK. It seems Americans will need to do a bit of travelling if they want the complete A to Z experience as he’s only stopping in each city for two nights. Fans can buy individual tickets or multi-night bundles.

Paul Kelly is one of Australia’s best kept secrets, and most acclaimed singer-songwriters. I really hope plenty of international readers get out to these shows to discover for themselves just how brilliant he is.

Paul Kelly To Recieve APRA Honour

Paul KellyPaul Kelly will be the fitting recipient of the Ted Albert Award for Outstanding Services to Australian Music at this year’s APRA Music Awards.

Paul’s been chugging along for the last three decades, crafting some of the most moving and poignant songs around, and perhaps most significantly telling Australian stories. For that alone I think he deserves to be celebrated, and I’m glad organisers agree.

He’ll join previous recipients of the honour including Slim Dusty, Angus and Malcolm Youn, Jimmy Little, and Don Burrows.

The APRAs will be held in Sydney on June 21.

How to Make Gravy? There’s an App for That

They say there’s an app for everything, so perhaps it was only a matter of time before Paul Kelly made one for his memoir How To Make Gravy.

The app for the iPhone and iPad brings Paul’s words and music to life in a cool interactive format. You can read the unabridged ebook, watch a little video introduction recorded by Paul himself, and hear extracts of six songs referred to in the memoir.

“The app is the format closest to my original conception of the book which is as much for the ears as the eyes,” Paul explained.

There are so many rubbish apps out there, but this sounds like something worth spending your $19.99 on. If you’ve got more cash to spare though, remember that Paul is about to start touring the country with his A to Z Recordings Live tour. These unique shows will see Paul performing his A to Z of songs in alphabetical order over four nights in each city.

Tickets are available in 4, 3, 2, and 1 night packages, and the more tickets you buy the more you’ll save. However with Melbourne shows selling out rapidly, folks there can only get 2-night packages until the 19th, and 1-night packages after that.

Here are all the dates!

Paul Kelly Plays for Indigenous Students

Paul Kelly boosted the spirits of students in far north Queensland this week.

The acclaimed singer-songwriter performed at Djarragun College at Gordonvale, south of Cairns. The school teaches students from between Cape York and Yarrabah. It is particularly invested in programs to help students avoid run-ins with the law.

It must have been a real thrill for the school’s music department, who accompanied Paul during his performance.

The school’s music department director John Grace said the visit was “a morale booster” for his students.

What a wonderful experience for the students, and what a generous person Paul Kelly must be to donate his time!

Merry Christmas with a Little Paul Kelly

Merry Christmas Oz Music Scene readers! I hope you’re having a wonderful day full of family, friends, good food, even better booze, presents under the tree, and of course some fabulous music. If you don’t have the latter, I sympathise. My mum swears it’s not Christmas without carols sung by The Peppermint Candy Kids. In an effort to ensure you don’t have to suffer the same fate, here’s Paul Kelly with the Australian Christmas classic “How To Make Gravy.” Happy holidays everybody!

Melinda Schneider Duets with Paul Kelly

Melinda Schneider has a new fan in Aussie singer-songwriter Paul Kelly. Paul was so impressed with a demo version of one of Melinda’s new songs, he agreed to sing it on her latest album.

The unlikely duo met by chance in Coogee.

“I was snorkelling at Coogee Beach and got up and out of the water, and there was Paul Kelly sitting on a rock,” Melinda told The Sunday Telegraph.

The pair got to chatting, so Melinda decided to send Paul a copy of her song “Still Here.” He loved it so much, they decided to record it together at his Melbourne home.

“I love his vocals on it,” she gushed. “The intimacy of it is really beautiful on that track.”

Melinda will launch her latest album, Be Yourself, at Sydney’s City Tattersalls Club on Thursday. It will hit stores on 5 July.

Free Paul Kelly Downloads

Everyone loves downloading music, but there seems to be fewer ways to legally do it these days. Luckily Aussie balladeer Paul Kelly is making things a bit easier on his fans by offering some free downloads.

Paul is offering downloads of more than 100 live recordings. The move is inspired by his 2007 A-Z concerts, where he performed 100 songs over four nights in alphabetical order.

Visit Paul’s website tomorrow for the A songs. A new letter’s songs will be made available each month for the next two years.

It’s going to take a really long time to get it, but I bet the entire collection will be worth the wait!
