Paul Roth Impresses With “You”

I’m catching up on my emails and listened to some of the songs that came out at the tail-end of last year. However, the funny thing about music is that I feel it often finds you in the right moment. So while “You,” the latest single from Aussie ex-pat Paul Roth, was released late last year, this emotionally-charged track is perfect for the start of 2021.

Reading that Paul was influenced by the Dave Matthews Band track “Crash Into Me” made perfect sense. He admits “while this is a more tame version just about romantic infatuation, I found the raw honesty of where a man’s mind, including my own, can go in building something up in his head so intriguing and also important to confront.”

Paul has had an incredibly prolific 2020 and looks to be continuing the trend this year, as he’ll drop another new single this Friday.

Paul Roth Rocks Out With “Murals”

Aussie expat Paul Roth is tapping into his rock roots for his latest single “Murals.” With his fourth single for the year, Roth is showcasing a heavier sound influenced by Foo Fighters and Gang of Youths. I enjoy his mellower material, but it’s so great to discover this edgier side.

The track is a personal one for Paul, recounting his life-changing decision to move from Australia’s Central Coast to Hong Kong. Its title references the lights that shine across Victoria Harbour and the melting pot of people and food he discovered across the ocean.

The year might be winding down, but Paul isn’t slowing up. He’ll follow the release of “Murals” with another new track, “You” in November.

Paul Roth’s New Single “Gold” Glitters

Aussie-born, Hong-Kong based singer Paul Roth isn’t letting the global pandemic stem his creativity. He’s just released his third solo single of the year, “Gold.” It’s more of a slow burner than his previous releases, but I love the way Paul builds the instruments here, layering guitars and vocals to create something really special.

It should be special though, as Paul wrote the song about the special lady in his life. The song might not sound very festive, but tap into those lyrics and you’ll soon realise it celebrates having someone by your side through the good times and bad.

“I just had this moody chorus melody that I couldn’t out of my head and before I had any concrete lyrics, every line finished with ‘with you,'” he explained.

Paul has another new track coming out on October 2. Follow his Facebook page to hear it first.

Paul Roth Embraces Americana Sound With “L.A.”

Aussie expat Paul Roth is giving me nostalgic vibes with his new single “L.A.” He says the Americana track was mostly inspired by the TV show Californication, but I can’t help thinking about classic West Coast rock acts like The Eagles and Jackson Browne as I hear it.

“I like how sometimes sad songs can sound happy and vice-versa,” he explained. “I really like how it works here as it gives a sense of peace, contentment and happiness in what on the surface seems like a sad song lyrically.”

Paul is taking advantage of the downtime from touring and focusing on recording and releasing more new songs throughout the year.

Esimorp Bassist Paul Roth Goes Solo With “Still”

Esimorp was one of my favourite musical discoveries last year so I was keen to discover what the solo music from bass guitarist Paul Roth sounded like. I got my first taste recently when the Central Coast-born Hong Kong-based singer-songwriter released his first single of the year, “Still.”

“Still” is such a cool track. It’s a bit of a slow burn, but you just see if you’re not tapping your toes in time as it builds. I hear a touch of gospel and soul influences that add richness to the track’s infectious groove.

“This was one of those songs that really all just came together in one sitting, I instantly fell for the rhythm and harmony combo and each melody flowed exactly how I would like,” he explained.

“Still” is the first of several songs Paul plans to release this year. I can’t wait to hear what else he’s got in store for us!
