Anywhere Festival Ready to Take Over SE Queensland Next Month

I don’t know about your social calendar, but looking at mine it seems like our arts scene is on its way to recovery. Suddenly I have tickets for gigs in the near future, with other gigs not too far behind them. If you needed further proof, then check out what’s planned for the 10th annual Anywhere Festival in Queensland. While other festivals have been scaled back affairs, this event promises more than 800 performances across the regions of Ipswich, Moreton Bay, Brisbane, the Sunshine Coast, and Noosa.

Anywhere Festival is proudly like no other festival in this country. The shows happen literally anywhere, including gyms, ferry stops, backyards, plant nurseries, warehouses, heritage homes, parks, and online. The shows are every bit as eclectic as the venues, with music, cabaret, poetry, dance, comedy, circus acts, and more on the agenda.

“I believe that performance and the arts should be a part of our lives and not just something we go to a theatre for. Anywhere Festival takes temporary possession of everyday and extraordinary places in order to make things happen in situations that wouldn’t normally, namely – the nooks and crannies of YOUR local area,” explained the festival’s founder Paul Osuch.

Anywhere Festival runs from May 6 to 23. Check out the website for the full program to see what’s happening near you.

Queensland’s Red Deer Fest Back

After a one-year hiatus, Red Deer Fest is back in Queensland, bigger and brighter than ever. This year’s event will see Frenzal Rhomb, Andy Bull, Salmonella Dub Soundsystem, Ayla, Hey Geronimo, and heaps more taking over the natural amphitheatre beneath the D’Aguilar range in the Samford Valley.

This is a festival that loves being different. Tickets are strictly limited to create an intimate atmosphere, there are food and market stalls, and camping is encouraged. If you do have your heart set on a night under the stars, be warned though. Organisers have reduced the number of camping tickets available to ensure this beautiful site stays at its best.

Red Deer Fest hits Mt Sampson on October 3. Tickets are available now from the festival website.

Butterfingers’ Singer Evil Eddie’s Ode to Queensland

Former Butterfingers’ front man Evil Eddie is paying tribute to his home state with his new single “Queensland.” Butterfingers enthusiasts should love this solo effort, as has that same hip hop/punk core and “brilliantly uncouth” lyrics that made the iconic band so successful.

The “Queensland” single offers real value for music fans, with the inclusion of a radio edit and Bewilderbeats remix. It comes from the forthcoming debut album, tentatively titled Welcome to Flavour Country. We may not know exactly what it’ll be called yet, but we do know that Eddie plays almost all the instruments himself, bar drums, which is pretty impressive.

No doubt we’ll get to hear “Queensland” and some more new tracks when Evil Eddie takes to the stage at the upcoming Peats Ridge Festival on the Central Coast on December 29, and the Woodford Folk Festival on December 30 and 31. He’ll be backed by an all star band boasting members of Butterfingers, Laneous and the Family Yah, Bang Boss Kelly, The Disables, and Spitfireliar. I hear they might also pop up and play a few secret shows, so keep your eyes peeled and your ears to the ground music fans!

Awesome Indie Music Sounds Like Brisbane

A host of Brisbane independent record labels have banded together to promote the Queensland capital’s flourishing DIY music scene through the Sounds like Brisbane campaign.

Brisbane is a musical melting pot which gave birth to legendary acts like Regurgitator, The Saints, The Go-Betweens, Powderfinger, Savage Garden, and Tex Perkins. It’s also home to new artists I Heart Hiroshima, Yves Klein Blue, Dead Letter Circus, and heaps more.

“There’s no doubting that right now Brisbane’s indie labels are the engine room of the local music scene and the contribution they make should be celebrated and supported,” explained project coordinator Craig Spann. “Despite the fact these labels are often a one or two-person operation, they are ensuring the Brisbane builds on its reputation as one of the world’s most exciting music cities.”

Sounds Like Brisbane will celebrate its official launch on June 18 with a free all-ages show in the Brisbane CBD. Local indie acts including Blowhard, Texas Tea, Carry Nation, Fushia, Halfway, My Fiction, Nova Scotia, The Rational Academy, and The Optimen will play on two stages housed in Burnett Lane and Island Court.

To learn more about Sounds Like Brisbane check out the website. It profiles the city’s indie labels and musicians, and will feature stacks of exclusive content over the coming months.

Pink Holidays in Queensland

After a massive 27 shows in Australia, and with plenty more still to come, Pink has definitely earned herself a holiday. With no concerts scheduled this week, the American pop-rock princess and her husband Carey Hart are taking a little R’n’R in Queensland.

But don’t think Pink’s the type of gal to spend a week lazing on a beach idly. Instead the pair will tour the state on two wheels.

“We’re going on a motorcycle trip,” she told The Daily Telegraph.

While exploring the great outdoors, she’s crossing fingers that her paths don’t cross any of the country’s creepy natives.

“How is anyone still living in this country?” she mused when discussing our native wildlife.

Come on Pink, we’ve only got the world’s deadliest spiders and snakes. You’re not chicken, are you?
