Cold Chisel Heading Back Into the Studio

Cold Chisel are determined to soldier on despite the untimely death of their bandmate Steve Prestwich in January. The remaining members say they’ll record some new material over the coming months.

Charley Drayton will step in for Steve as needed on the new tracks. Steve can’t be replaced of course, but Charley brings with him a wealth of experience after recording with Keith Richards, Iggy Pop, Neil Young, the Divinyls, and Simon & Garfunkel.

“We’d already recorded a number of new songs with Steve prior to his passing. Plus all five of us have written songs over summer with the intention of more recording this year”, explained Don Walker. “Hopefully Charley can help us complete the work we began together. Steve was totally into everything we’d been planning for 2011 so while the last few months have been very difficult to deal with, we all feel that he would want us to complete the plans we made together.”

Cold Chisel aren’t sure when they’ll release this material, but when they do all profits will continue to be split five ways. Steve’s children will fittingly inherit his share.

While we’re waiting on the new stuff Warner plans to release the Cold Chisel back catalogue in digital form. These revamped albums will include unreleased tunes recorded way back when, so there’s something there for the fans who already have the originals.

I’m thrilled to see Cold Chisel are keeping on with this new stuff. It’ll never be the same without Steve Prestwich, but I’m sure he’d want them to go on in his absence. I’m excited to see what the band comes up with!

The Living End Back in the Studio

The Living End’s last album White Noise was massive, so it’s exciting to hear that the lads are back in the studio some three years after its release.

Not that they’ve been resting on their laurels during that time. Chris Cheney recently wrote on The Living End website that the band spent most of last year writing, and they’ve now got a short list of 40 songs! Double CD, anyone? It seems the final votes will come down to public opinion though.

“As usual for TLE we did a week’s worth of gigs playing only new songs to see which ones would sink or swim,” he explained. “We also just wanted people to hear what we are up to. There are some really different ideas kicking around this time but the emphasis has been on creating a cohesive album that is heavy, melodic and overall very anthemic.”

The band are currently working with Nick Didia at a studio in Byron Bay ahead of an anticipated spring 2011 release. Do the band have another White Noise on their hand? With that many songs to choose from, surely this album is going to be quality stuff!

Ryan Meeking and The Few Album on Its Way

Ryan Meeking and The Few’s all too brief sets were one of the highlights of Rob Thomas’ recent tour. So I’m thrilled to hear the band are currently in Atlanta putting the finishing touches on their album.

It should be something special, with Nick Dadia (Pearl Jam, Bruce Springsteen) in charge of production. While Stateside the band will also perform a showcase concert at New York’s Norwood Club on June 3.

The band will be back home before we know it though; they’re booked in to play Melbourne’s Northcote Social Club on July 2.

Sarah Blasko Records in Sweden

Sarah Blasko has travelled to Sweden to record her third album.

The new tracks were penned at home in Sydney before she set off for a European tour. While in Europe Sarah decided to work with pop mastermind Bjorn Yttling. She’d noticed his name on the back of some of her favourite albums, including discs by Lykke Li and Camera Obscura, so she figured she’d pop the question.

“I sent him a letter and some music and within about a week he got back to me and said he was interested, so I went and visited him in Stockholm and we hit it off,” Sarah said in a statement.

“He showed me the great studios we could record in, he had some great ideas and a lot of enthusiasm and I just felt we could make a good record together. The snowy conditions also won me over.”

It has to make a nice change from Australia’s heatwaves!

Sarah should be in the studio for the next six weeks, but she’ll keep us updated on her progress through her blog.
