“Roller Coaster” – Checkerboard Lounge

The year might be winding down, but I’m sneaking in one last album review. I couldn’t let 2023 close without encouraging you to listen to Roller Coaster, the fabulous new album from Naarm/Melbourne blues icons Checkerboard Lounge.

The moment I heard the opening notes of the title track, I was hooked. It’s such a rollicking good time, and it made me hungry for more. My appetite was well and truly satisfied as Checkerboard Lounge delivered all the twists and turns you might expect from an album named after an amusement park staple. The band refuses to stay in the same place too long, treating listeners to soulful ballads, psychedelic rock, instrumentals, and a splash of jazz. Their originals already sound like classics. When you make such fantastic new music, a cover has to be pretty outstanding to make an album. But their take on Nina Simone’s “I Wish I Knew How It Would Feel to Be Free” is inspired. Dedicated to the plight of Australia’s First Nations people, it’s a poignant reminder of how far we still have to come as a nation.

Roller Coaster is the first Checkerboard Lounge featuring the band’s latest addition, bassist Zoe Frater. She’s used to great effect. I’m not sure when I last heard a bass solo: this album has four. All the musicians are stellar; the more I listened to this album the more I appreciated their contributions. On the first listen it’s easy to get sucked in by Carl Pannuzzo’s outstanding vocals, because they’re just so good, but everyone plays their part here.

As with so many acts that make music outside the mainstream genres, Checkerboard Lounge are revered in the blues scene but largely unknown outside of it. That’s a great shame, because they’re brilliant. With the release of Roller Coaster, it’s the perfect time to get on board.

Roller Coaster is out now. Checkered Lounge are already starting to full up their concert calendar for next year. See them anywhere you can.

Ride the Wave With LT’s “Rollercoaster”

Queensland indie act LT takes us on a trip with her dreamy new single “Rollercoaster.” This track brings you all the fun of the fair, with plenty of twists and turns. It sounds beautiful and bright, but make sure you don’t miss the message in those lyrics.

“Rollercoaster is about caring for someone who battles with bipolar disorder,” LT explained. “It’s about navigating through sleepless nights and uncontrollable highs, and keeping afloat during days of slumber and sweeping lows. It’s about love, perseverance, and riding that rollercoaster until you next see light.”

LT worked closely with emerging Meeanjin/Brisbane creator Brendan Shoenmaker to bring this story to life with a gorgeous video.

“Due to the sensitive subject matter of Rollercoaster, it was really important we created something beautiful that in no way added to the stigma that people battling mental health issues can experience,” LT added. “Brendan used inspiration from filmmaker Ingmar Bergman’s persona, creating a film depicting inner duality. The story demonstrates a study of yin and yang told through the cat and mouse relationship of two dancers, representing not just the duality of bipolar but the togetherness of the relationship as well as a healthy dose of self-love. It explores the relationship of duality from a perspective of absence and presence, with the dance built around two characters slipping in and out of each other’s space. It is the tug of war between these moments that we wanted to showcase along with connection, endurance and the will to push on through.”

I hear this is just one of several new tunes from LT we should hear this year. Bring them on!

Enjoy a Wild Ride With Donnarumma’s “Rollercoaster”

Strap yourself in for “Rollercoaster,” the latest single from Adelaide rockers Donnarumma.

Just like any good rollercoaster, this track starts small, with delicate vocals and guitar work. However, before too long it kicks in, launching the listener full throttle into its bold guitar riff and strong vocals. Once you’re in it you’ve got no choice but to just hold on and enjoy the ride.

“I based the narrative around the idea of being self-critical, almost like a person arguing with themselves in a mirror,” explained Louis Donnarumma, the man behind those amazing vocals. “At the beginning, I started with a lyric-less hook and developed the song from there over roughly a year. It took heaps of trial and error, loads of demos and fleshing out ideas with the band to get to the final product. We put heaps of ourselves into this track and it’s definitely the proudest we’ve been with our work.”

This song sounds awesome at home, but I imagine it’s going to be even better experienced live. You’ll get your chance when Donnarumma takes the single on tour in the New Year.
