Nollsy Re-Releases “Lean On Me” for Drought Angels

We’re all trying to do our bit to support the farmers battling drought around the country. Whether it’s donating formal wear, food, or our spare change at the checkout, Aussies are banding together. However, what if you could lend a helping hand simply by listening to music? It sounds like a win-win to me!

Condoblin’s favourite son Shannon Noll has made it simple with the re-release of his 2012 anthem “Lean On Me.” 100% of the money raised from the single’s sale and digital streams will go straight to Drought Angels.

“This is essentially my shout out song for all city folk, especially, to lend a hand to their country cousins. People on the land are quite proud. We need them to know we are here for them and that they are not alone, it could provide them with some hope when many are, sadly, feeling hopeless due to this natural disaster,” Shannon said.

“Lean On Me is the song that came to me straight away when I was thinking what could I do within the industry to help. It came to me because the words are not my personal story, they are words for everyone to interpret how they feel with their own personal situation. All I hope is that the farmers and volunteers know it is really about and for them.”

Download or simply stream “Lean on Me” on Spotify or iTunes to do your bit. Look, I’ve made it easy for you by embedding the Spotify player. No excuses!

Shannon Noll Strikes Gold With “Southern Sky”

I must admit, I’ve never been what you’d call a Shannon Noll fan. I thought he was very good at producing radio-friendly music for the masses, but his songs rarely stood out to me as anything above average. But I’ve been forced to eat my words after hearing his latest track “Southern Sky.”

The track is every bit as patriotic as you’d want a Nollsy song to be. But it’s got an epic anthemic quality to it that puts it a cut above his other singles. The song’s video is also gorgeous, although since it was filmed around some of my old NSW stomping grounds – Pokolbin and Nobbys Beach – I may be a little biased.

“We had a beautiful few days in the Hunter Valley and Newcastle filming the Southern Sky video,” Shannon said. “As an Aussie who grew up in the bush, I love being able to show the beauty of our country in my music clips. We travelled from cliffs to the coast, with each scene giving just a taste of the amazing Australian landscapes out there beyond the cities.”

“Southern Sky” is the second single from Shannon’s fifth studio album, which will be released later this year. Expect to hear a preview of more new material at Shannon’s shows all around the country.

Red Hot Summer @ Westport Park, Port Macquarie – 4 February 2017

Port Macquarie is nearly four hours from my place. It’s a lovely part of the world, but it takes something special to get me to make the journey. But the combination of an irresistible Red Hot Summer line-up and a catch-up with my friend Lisa (who hails from Brissie, so had a much longer journey than me) was too good to pass up.

Ben Hazelwood helped make the already warm crowd that little bit warmer. They don’t call these shows Red Hot Summer for nothing! I knew his name rang a bell, but was surprised to read that he was on the first season of The Voice. As I saw photos I remembered a performer who was talented but a little bland, a world away from this sexy rock god that graced the stage. He had just the right amount of drama and theatrics to pull me in, and his voice has matured so much in just a few years. I thoroughly enjoyed his set and made a mental note to check out more of his compelling originals.

From new discoveries to old favourites, Taxiride were up next. I knew a whole lot of hardcore Taxiride fans when I was in my late teens, but I can only recall catching them once. Watching them on the stage, I felt a little regret that I didn’t see more of them in the ’90s. They’re every bit as good as they once were, if you were wondering, with some of the tightest harmonies you’ll ever hear and a back catalogue that’s bigger than you might expect. I found myself singing along with every song and clapping heartily for them, enjoying myself thoroughly despite the rain that would plague the rest of the evening.
I’ve never really been a Shannon Noll fan. His music is easy to listen to, but it always felt a little Triple M by the numbers for me. However, seeing him live I have a brand new appreciation for Nollsy. He’s such a showman, the quintessential Aussie larrikin with a great collection of songs that make people smile. Simple. I turned to my husband and said watching Nollsy belt out The Choirboys’ “Run to Paradise” may just be the most Australian thing I’ve ever seen at a gig. And even though he’s probably sung “What About Me?” more times than I’ve had hot dinners, he still put all his heart and soul into it. I was also not so secretly thrilled to see him decked out in double denim, with jeans and a sleeveless vest. I’m not sure he could have chosen a more perfect outfit!

Jon Stevens stood in for an ailing Daryl Braithwaite. I must admit, it took me a little while to warm up to him. In a show like this, you have such a short time with the fans. And let’s face it, as a fill-in act, they’re probably not your fans. So to start slow to a bunch of songs most of us didn’t know seemed an odd choice. All was forgiven once the hits started coming through. As well as the Noiseworks standards there was “Disappear,” an INXS track which reminded me of the very first time I saw Jon, fronting the seminal Aussie rock band. He also paid tribute to Dazza with a stirring cover of “The Horses.” By “Hot Chilli Woman” we were all in ecstasy right along with him.

James Reyne was the act I was most looking forward to, and as always, he didn’t disappoint. I’ve seen him play so many times, but mostly in an acoustic setting. So to hear him electric with a full band was bags of fun. His set was flawless, delivering all of the songs anyone could hope for, from his days with Australian Crawl to his solo successes. What a talent.

John Farnham was the man so many people of Port Macquarie came to see, as is evidence by how quickly the general admission area filled once his set began. It’s a shame that Westport Park doesn’t slope, because any parts that I could see from my comfy camp chair were on the big screens rather than the stage as people gathered in front. John Farnham’s voice is undeniable though. His set brought us hit after hit from his solo career and even his time in Little River Band. “Burn For You” was a poignant highlight, although it would have been nice if the yobbos in front of me could have quit laughing as they hoisted women onto their shoulders and taken a moment to be quiet and listen. It’s all about respect guys, for both the artists and the people around you who want to get lost in the music. My husband and I had to stand for “The Voice” because, well, it seemed unAustralian not to. During it my husband turned to me and said “No Lauren, this is the most Australian thing we’ve ever witnessed as a concert.” As we all sang out the chorus is was hard to disagree. As John came back for an encore I wondered what could be left in his repertoire. Where do you go after “The Voice”? It seems you visit the back catalogue of another legendary Aussie act, AC/DC. “It’s a Long Way to the Top” was the ideal end for this celebration of Aussie talent. I just wondered though, why not make use of the bagpipers you’ve already brought for “The Voice”? It seemed a strange choice.

Before I go, I should make mention of how well run the day was. The staff were exceptional. The personable MC made those moments between acts fly by. While the food and drink vendors didn’t deliver anything too flash, the food was hot and the lines were short. The bar queues didn’t even seem too intimidating, although the decision not to serve wine was a strange one. Special props to the Lions Club who diligently collected our rubbish throughout the day. It’s got to be such a thankless job, but it made the place feel so much nicer.

Port Macquarie is a long way to go for any concert, but the Red Hot Summer tour was definitely worth the trip.

Shannon Noll Tours New Single

It seemed like every time I switched on my TV on Australia Day, Shannon Noll’s face was staring back at me. I should have guessed he wasn’t simply getting patriotic; there’s a Nollsy tour a-brewing.

He’ll head back on the road next month to support the release of “Living in Stereo,” the latest cut from his newish album A Million Suns. Never one to do things by halves, the tour will run for five months and take in more than 30 cities across six states and territories.

Shannon is promising to play new tracks and plenty of old favourites backed by a full band. As he’s been performing in acoustic mode for some time it’ll be great to hear him really rocking out.

“Really looking forward to getting back out on the road to play in front of my fans, it’s been too long,” Shannon said in a statement. “I’m really happy with the new show, and I think my set is the strongest it’s ever been. Bring on the first gig!”

Shannon Noll Shops Around for New Record Label

Shannon Noll has found himself without a record label after his Sony contract ended at the end of 2009, and he doesn’t mind one bit. Shannon_Noll24-1

After completing his deal, which saw him release three albums and a greatest hits disc, Nollsy says he’s looking forward to a fresh start.

However he’s only got good words to say for the label which helped guide his career.

“It was great while it lasted and Sony were terrific to work with but it’s time to take some risks,” he told The Daily Telegraph. “When I came to Sydney to audition all those years ago, it was a stab in the dark. Now I am confident I’ve got the experience and the knowledge to freshen things up and I’m looking forward to the future with real excitement.”

Before making the leap, Shannon sought counsel from current touring buddy Jimmy Barnes.

“He reckoned it was time for me to start again and finally leave the Idol thing behind me for good,” he explained. “I’m going to find the best place for me because I feel like I’m holding the cards for the first time in a long time.”

I dare say he’ll have no shortage of offers. Personally I think he’d be a great fit for Michael Gudinski’s Liberation Blue label, but we’ll have to wait and see!

Shannon Noll and Street Warriors Cover "Solid Rock"

Shannon Noll has teamed up with indigenous hip hoppers Street Warriors to revamp an Australian classic, the Goanna hit “Solid Rock.”

The combination of hip hop beats and rock guitars breathes new life into the 1982 anthem which sang of the displacement of Aboriginal tribes during Australia’s white settlement. The themes made the song particularly poignant for the Street Warriors.

“If everyone practices respect – for land, for country, for each other, most of our problems would disappear,” said one half of the group, Abie Wright.

The video saw Shannon and the band headed to the Gommeroi Land around Gunnedah. The song pays homage to the Street Warriors’ ancestor, Red Chief Kangaroo, and they shot part of the video in the Red Chief Cave in his honour. Check it out below!

Shannon Noll's a Dirty Rocking Scoundrel

Shannon Noll is living up to his tag as one of the hardest-working men on the Aussie music scene. He hasn’t even wrapped up his current tour, and he’s already making plans for another.

He’ll barely have time to get his suitcase unpacked before kicking off the Dirty Rocking Scoundrels tour. The shows, which sees Shannon join forces with veteran rockers The Screaming Jets, take in New South Wales, the ACT, and Melbourne’s suburbs.

Family Tragedy Brings Shannon Noll Back Home

Shannon Noll has cut short his stint in the European production of War of the Worlds following the deaths of three grandparents.

“When I was over in the UK in March, my grandfather died,” Shannon told The Daily Telegraph.

“When I’d just got back over there to start the tour, my grandmother died and about two weeks before the end of the tour my nanna died, which was unexpected.”

Shannon jumped on the next available plane and arrived home just in time for a memorial service for his grandparents and funeral for his nanna. He originally intended to rejoin the War of the Worlds cast in Amsterdam, but has opted instead to stay home with family ahead of his Australian tour, which kicks off in Sydney later this month.
