Aussie Artists Climbing The Charts

A diverse range of Australian artists have made their mark on the ARIA charts this week.

Fergie may have kept her stranglehold on the singles chart with her mammoth hit, “Big Girls Don’t Cry,” but she’s faced stiff competition from Shannon Noll. His new single “Loud” has debuted at number three.

Fellow Australian Idol graduate Ricki-Lee has slipped two places with “Can’t Touch It,” but the pop smash is still sitting pretty at number seven.

Jetsetting folksters The Waifs have debuted at number two with their latest album, Sun Dirt Water. But they couldn’t shift the might of British opera star Paul Potts, who holds the number one spot for the second week with One Chance.

The Waifs have pushed Damien Leith’s album Where We Land to number four. The John Butler Trio’s Grand National and Powderfinger’s Dream Days at the Hotel Existence round out the top ten. They’re holding steady at ninth and tenth spot.

Shannon Noll’s Loud New Single

In the not so recent past, I couldn’t turn on the radio without Shannon Noll trying to fire me up. I quite enjoy Shannon, but the last thing I wanted to hear from my clock radio was inspirational pop rock telling me why I needed to get up and out of bed. I also didn’t need to hear that he knew how hard it could be, but encouraging me to lift anyway.

Expect more of these inescapable positive messages to dominate the airwaves in the coming weeks. Shannon’s latest single, “Loud”, has just been released to radio.

Nollsy is the most successful artist discovered through the Australian Idol talent search, selling more albums and releasing more hit singles than his reality TV peers. He believes his optimistic outlook is the key to his longevity.

“There’s way too much negativity in the music industry, songs that talk about hate and killing and anger,” he told The Daily Telegraph.

“The beautiful thing about music is its ability to make people feel something positive.”

Shannon Noll: Poker Pin-Up

Shannon Noll is the latest face of Australian poker, but his new pin-up status has been criticised by anti-gambling experts.

Dr Matthew Rockloff from the Central Queensland University says Shannon’s spruiking could have a detrimental effect on his teen fans.

However, Nollsy insists poker is just a bit of fun. The soft rocker claims he has never played for money since he took up the card game 18 months ago.

“It doesn’t cost you anything and it’s a social event so people can get out and talk and meet new people,” he told The Daily Telegraph.

Shannon will play a few hands at the Wild Turkey APL Tournament of Champions at Luna Park on Saturday night.

He’ll join more than 220 players, including 2005 Poker World Series champion Joe Hachem, Monaco-based card shark Gus Hansen, Grinspoon’s Pat Davern, and rugby league’s Willie Mason. The unlikely players will compete for a share of $1 million dollars. Not bad for a night out!

Shannon Noll Takes on America

Australian Idol runner-up Shannon Noll is looking to boost his musical cred by collaborating with some of America’s best songwriters.

Shannon Noll’s melodic brand of pop-rock has seen him top the Australian charts and tour with international acts Bryan Adams and Live.

The boy from the bush recently traveled to Los Angeles, where he worked with Bon Jovi guitarist Richie Sambora and pop stalwart Richard Marx. The Sun-Herald recently reported that he is planning to return to the United States to continue working on his new tracks.

But don’t think Condoblin’s favorite son has turned his back on Oz altogether. Noll has also met with a number of Australian songwriters, in efforts to find the perfect tracks for his third album.

The 31-year-old has proved he’s got staying power, after missing out on the reality TV crown four years ago. Fans can expect to hear Shannon Noll’s new album and tour in August.
