Shelley Segal Explores Consent in “No”

Aussie expat Shelley Segal is back with a brand new single and an EP on the horizon. “No” is a modern #metoo anthem giving a voice to the problems many women face when turning down sexual advances today. It gives us a great taste of the kind of thought-provoking music that’s in store for us when her EP Holy drops on November 1.

“No is a song about consent and the subtleties surrounding it,” she explained. “It describes three different scenarios in which the protagonist finds it difficult to say no to sexual advances. I wrote the song because even though it’s 2019 and so many women feel comfortable asserting themselves and speaking up for themselves, and even though there has been so much public discourse and progress on these issues, there are still scenarios where it feels hard to say ‘no’. You can find yourself in a situation that you don’t want to be in and yet be unable to express that. It’s not always easy in the moment to process the potential consequences that may come from your reaction. Like the examples in the song for instance, in a work environment, in the street with a stranger. Saying ‘no’ can create adverse outcomes like risking your job, or your safety. This discussion around consent is not as straightforward as maybe we would like it to be and I wanted to reflect on those nuances.”

Shelley has been living and working in the United States since 2016. Hopefully it’s not too long before we see her back on our shores for some shows. Until then, listen out for Holy on its release next month.

Shelley Segal Releases Moving New Single “Somebody Like You”

I associate Shelley Segal with quirky, upbeat folky ditties. But she’s showcasing a much darker, more layered sound on her latest single “Somebody Like You.” It’s a real departure for this Melbourne songstress, but I like it!

“Somebody Like You” charts Shelley’s struggles as an 18-year-old forming a relationship with a man outside her Jewish faith. Shelley fought for the relationship and ultimately moved out of home after the tension with her family got so great. While she’s not religious now, she says “I know that many people still experience this tension between their families, traditions and the person they love for various reasons, religion, race, gender, orientation. The truth is, you cannot help or control who you love.”

Shelley is currently based in Los Angeles, but she’ll be back on home soil to play some single launch shows in her home state over the summer.

Shelley Segal Tours “Background Noises”

After playing 40 dates in the United States, Melbourne songstress Shelley Segal is back home playing concerts and showing off her softer side with her new single “Background Noises.”

I don’t think I’ve ever been let down by a Shelley Segal song, and she keeps her record intact with this one. It’s an insightful track reflecting on the breakdown of her friends’ marriage and how she might fare in the same circumstances.

“The chorus seems to mean something different to me each time I sing it. Sometimes a shock, a deep loss, a painful reminder, an acceptance, a coming to terms with, a finality, a longing, an assertiveness, a future, a determinedness. As such a change would at different times of reflection,” she explained in the press release. “It’s not just a love or relationship lost but a physical place – a space and time that was all encompassing and is now gone.”

After all those US dates, she’s bound to be in fine form. Here are all the remaining shows of her Aussie tour.

Shelley Segal Does it Again with “Sidelined”

Melbourne singer-songwriter Shelley Segal speaks for women everywhere that don’t measure up to society’s aesthetic standards with her gorgeous new single “Sidelined.” The track is lifted from her fourth studio album Strange Feeling, which hits stores on May 8. I loved “Morocco,” the last of Shelley’s tracks that crossed my path, and this is every bit as good.

“The song is my understanding of the nature of our aesthetics while questioning whether we can overcome them,” Shelley explained. The clip is the perfect accompaniment, a video which sees Shelley morphing from a bed-heady natural girl to a more immaculately groomed version of herself. “Subscribing to the visual expectations of others can vastly improve our outcomes, but those that don’t fit will often pay a price or be sidelined,” Shelley admits.

Shelley will promote the single and Strange Feeling album at the following shows.

Shelley Segal Wows me with “Morocco”

Where has Shelley Segal been all my life? This gorgeous Melbourne chanteuse is preparing to release her third studio album An Easy Escape on June 6, but this is first time I’ve heard her music. It certainly won’t be the last though, because after listening to the lead single “Morocco,” I’m a real fan.

Shelley was inspired to write the song after visiting Marrakech and Essaouira.

“I was completely blown away by the beauty of the country and the colourful, carefree, fun time that was available to me as a tourist,” she explained. “Slowly as the trip went on I began to see some of the darker sides of what it was like for many who lived there.”

The shooting of the video took Shelley back to Morocco where she got to experience “a whirlwind of people, bustling markets and beautiful seaside” all over again.

Shelley will celebrate the release of An Easy Escape with the following shows.

13 June 2014 – Northcote Social Club, Melbourne
26 June 2014 – The Vanguard, Sydney
28 June 2014 – Paynesville Wine Bar, Paynesville
